About Shanghai Buffet
Shanghai Buffet is a Chinese Restaurant located at 531 W Mt Vernon St, Nixa, MO 65714, USA, offering a buffet-style dining experience to the local community. Based on recent online reviews, it appears that Shanghai Buffet has faced significant criticism regarding the quality and freshness of its food, the state of its facilities, and its pricing structure. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of Shanghai Buffet based on the available customer feedback, covering aspects such as the environment, services, features, and any mentioned promotional information, while highlighting the predominantly negative sentiment expressed by reviewers.
The environment of Shanghai Buffet is described by one reviewer as "old" and in need of a "remodel," suggesting that the physical condition of the restaurant may be lacking in terms of modern standards or general upkeep. This could potentially impact the overall dining experience for customers who value a clean and updated ambiance. The negative description of the salad bar as "a joke" that they "just need to do away with" further suggests that certain areas of the buffet may be unappealing or poorly maintained. While another reviewer did not comment on the environment, the explicit call for a remodel from one customer indicates that the physical setting might be a point of concern for some patrons.
The service at Shanghai Buffet received a more positive note from one reviewer who stated that "the server was polite and no issues with service provided." This suggests that while the food and environment may have shortcomings, the staff's demeanor and attentiveness were satisfactory for at least one customer. However, another reviewer, while focusing primarily on the food, did not comment on the service, leaving it as a neutral aspect in their feedback. The politeness of the server is a positive aspect to consider, but it appears to be overshadowed by more significant concerns regarding the food and the overall value proposition.
Several features of Shanghai Buffet, as described by the negative reviews, raise significant concerns about the dining experience. A primary criticism is the poor quality and lack of freshness of the food. One reviewer stated that they "could get better quality Chinese food from a microwave dinner" and that the food on the buffet "had been sitting for a long time so did not have a fresh taste." This suggests potential issues with food turnover and holding times, leading to a subpar culinary experience. The description of chicken as "literally floating in sauce" with "breading all mushy and nasty taste" paints a particularly unappetizing picture of some of the main dishes.
Furthermore, one reviewer noted a "weird taste" to the food overall, which is a significant red flag regarding the preparation and quality of the ingredients. The broken ice cream machine was also mentioned, indicating potential issues with the maintenance of some of the buffet offerings. The salad bar was deemed so inadequate that the reviewer suggested its removal. These issues collectively point to a buffet that may not meet basic expectations for quality, variety, and maintenance.
Another significant feature highlighted in the negative reviews is the pricing, particularly concerning charges for young children. One customer was charged $5.99 for a two-year-old who consumed a minimal amount of food (a cookie, one piece of broccoli, and two small dessert cakes). The reviewer deemed this "ridiculous" and compared Shanghai Buffet unfavorably to buffets "3 times the size" with "so much more offerings and less expensive too." This suggests that the value for money at Shanghai Buffet is perceived as poor, especially for families with young children or compared to other buffet options that may be available in the wider area.
One reviewer did mention that the "potatoes was good but not cooked all the way," indicating inconsistency even within the few items they found somewhat acceptable. They also described the "lomain was ok" and the "cookies where good," but these few positive remarks are overshadowed by the more significant criticisms regarding the overall quality and freshness of the majority of the buffet offerings.
Currently, there is no information available in the provided reviews regarding any promotional offers or special deals at Shanghai Buffet. Given the negative feedback concerning the value for money and the overall quality of the food and facilities, any potential promotions would need to be quite significant to outweigh these concerns for potential customers. Local users would need to contact the restaurant directly at (417) 725-7834 to inquire about any current specials, but the overwhelming sentiment from the reviews suggests caution.
In conclusion, Shanghai Buffet in Nixa, MO, appears to be a Chinese restaurant that has garnered predominantly negative feedback from recent customers. Concerns have been raised regarding the age and condition of the facility, the poor quality and lack of freshness of the buffet food, the inadequacy of the salad bar, a broken ice cream machine, and pricing that is perceived as unreasonable, especially for young children. While one reviewer noted polite service, this positive aspect does not seem to compensate for the significant shortcomings in the food and environment. Local users considering Shanghai Buffet should be aware of these consistent negative reports and may want to explore alternative Chinese dining options in the Nixa area that have received more favorable reviews regarding food quality, freshness, and overall value. Given the strong negative sentiment, it would be prudent to exercise caution before choosing to dine at Shanghai Buffet.
For the Nixa community, the reviews for Shanghai Buffet suggest that it may not be the most highly recommended option for Chinese cuisine. The repeated concerns about food quality, freshness, and the state of the restaurant itself should give potential diners pause. While the politeness of the server is a positive note, it is unlikely to be the primary factor influencing a dining decision when more fundamental aspects like food quality and value are significantly criticized. Local residents might want to seek out other Chinese restaurants in Nixa that have a more positive track record for providing fresh, flavorful food at a reasonable price.
Ultimately, based on the available customer feedback, Shanghai Buffet appears to be a Chinese restaurant in Nixa, MO, that is currently struggling to meet customer expectations in terms of food quality, freshness, environment, and value. The consistently negative reviews highlight significant areas for potential improvement. Local users are advised to consider these perspectives carefully before choosing to dine at Shanghai Buffet and may find more satisfying options elsewhere.

I could get better quality Chinese food from a microwave dinner. Food on the buffet had been sitting for a long time so did not have a fresh taste. As one reviewer said about chicken littery floating in sauce, this was true. Breading all mushy and nasty taste. The ice cream machine was broke. The salad bar was a joke, they just need to do away with that part. Food had a weird taste to it. The place is old and could use a remodel. The server was polite and no issues with service provided. We had a 2 year old and was charged $5.99 for him. He had a cookie, 1 piece of broccoli a 2 dessert cakes. Ridiculous. Have been to many buffets 3 times the size of this place with so much more offerings and less expensive too.
Waiter was awesome food on the hand was less than good I wouldn't recommend this place potatoes was good but not cooked all the way lomain was ok cookies where good
This place has been a local staple for years. It’s rundown and needs a fresh update. However, it’s kind of just what I’ve come to expect there. If you don’t like a buffet and all that they are….visit their drive thru and everything you order will be made fresh. I will mention that it was 1:30 when we arrived and I did see them bring out 3-4 new fresh dishes while we were there.
Great price for the buffet. Was $21.50 for 2 adults...they refresh the food fairly often. Small buffet but has plenty of options. They got really busy before we arrived and they need a few more people to work but the 2 ladies we met where very nice and friendly. We plan to return for the awesome shrimp and mushrooms!!
All of their chicken items are literally floating in a liquid “sauce” so the breading is mushy and gross. Sweet & sour chicken, crab Rangoon and egg rolls wee okay. But, my wife was immediately sick while we were eating. I woke up in the middle of the night with serious GI issues and was sick most of the next day. This place is sub-par at best. We’ll never go back.
