Based on customer feedback, Shandong Restaurant offers a unique culinary experience that might differ from what some customers typically expect from a Chinese restaurant serving more common American-Chinese fare. One reviewer explicitly stated, "It’s NOT Chinese food if you are looking for what it’s called," suggesting that the cuisine here is distinct and represents a specific regional style of Chinese cooking, namely Shandong cuisine.
Despite this difference in culinary style, Shandong Restaurant has received positive feedback on certain aspects of its food. One customer lauded the "handmade" pot stickers, describing them as "big" and "delicious." This highlights a potential specialty of the restaurant and suggests that their dumplings are a noteworthy item on the menu. Another reviewer mentioned that the pork fried rice was "ok," indicating a neutral but acceptable experience with this dish.
However, not all dishes received positive reviews. The "northern beef" was described as "sweet and salty without broccoli," which deviated from the reviewer's expectation based on a picture. They also noted a "burned?" quality to the dish, leading to a negative impression. Additionally, the reviewer who critiqued the authenticity of the overall cuisine strongly disliked the dumplings, stating they were "never near homemade" and suggesting frozen alternatives available elsewhere were superior. This indicates that experiences with different dishes at Shandong Restaurant can vary significantly.
On the service front, Shandong Restaurant received positive remarks. One reviewer found the staff to be "very helpful and quick," suggesting efficient and attentive service. This is a crucial aspect of the dining experience, and positive feedback in this area indicates that the restaurant strives to provide good customer service.
A notable feature of Shandong Restaurant, based on a positive review, is the generous portion sizes. The reviewer mentioned that the portions of dishes like shrimp chow mein, Shandong beef, pork fried rice, and sweet and sour chicken were "large" and "easily shared family style." This can be a significant draw for customers looking for value and the opportunity to sample multiple dishes with family or friends.
The menu at Shandong Restaurant appears to include a variety of dishes, with some highlights being the handmade pot stickers, shrimp chow mein, Shandong beef, pork fried rice, and sweet and sour chicken. However, it's important to note the contrasting experiences with the Shandong beef and dumplings. The cuisine seems to focus on the flavors and preparations typical of the Shandong province, which might include a different balance of sweet, savory, and other tastes compared to more generalized American-Chinese food.

This is a honest authentic review. It’s NOT Chinese food if you are looking for what it’s called. The fried rice is ok, northern beef is sweet and salty without broccoli which is not how to picture shows, burned? dumplings is a no no where it’s never near homemade thank to 99 ranch where you can buy a whole lot in the frozen section with $14. Not recommended and will never come again
The staff were very helpful and quick. We purused the menu and picked several items to try. The pot stickers are big (like 3 pot stickers)! They are handmade and were delicious! After that, the shrimp chow mein, Shandong beef, pork fried rice, & sweet and sour chicken all came out. The portions were large and easily shared family style.
I ordered spicy dry fried chicken with mushrooms, peas, carrots and spicy sauce but what I got was worse than frozen chicken nuggets with store-bought teriyaki sauce and no veggies at all for $23. I used to like dining in at Shandong but not anymore. Complete rip-off!
This was a phenomenal find on our trip to Portland. We have a few people in our party with complicated allergies, and they navigated that with ease. Every dish was rich and full of flavor (the Brussels sprouts were the best we've ever had from any cuisine). They have a great balance of authenticity while remaining accessible for the Western palate.
The food was great ! My favorite is their Mapo Tofu with pork. It was an amazing taste. Their chicken curry in clay pot was delicious as well. A little disappointed on the chicken wings. It says Fried dry chicken wings, but it came out very saucy . Their service was slow that night, they were very busy and only two waiters working. They served my Mapo Tofu without pork when I ordered it with pork. Of course, I wasn't happy about that. I'm willing to pay more for it. I politely told them about it, and they changed it. I'm glad I spoke up. Overall, I'm planning to come back and try it again someday.
