What a cool place! The food here was absolutely delicious! The kimchi fried rice was amazing! The ribs were so tender! We really relished every bite. Naomi, our server, was informative and helpful, adding a great feeling to our dinner.
in short: Not recommended unless they hire more people. Maybe the burger is just subpar and the small plates are better. I've been wanting to try Shojo since picking up a cheesecake there from Duly in Cambridge, and was in Chinatown recently during the lunch hour so decided to stop by right when they opened. People are right that the music is kind of loud here, but the place is sort of cramped so I could hear the entire conversation between two people presumably on a date a few tables over. I only saw the same one employee the entire time I was there, and it took about 30 minutes to get my food (but morning prep probably makes it take longer). My lunch was just short of $30 total (incl. tip, tax, kitchen fee), so disappointing for the price. My thoughts on each part: The bun: it's not airy like you'd expect from bakery Chinese baos. I don't know if this is just their style or what, but as you can see in the 2nd pic from the bite, it's more of a mushy/wet/dense texture. The burger: I wasn't asked about the preferred doneness when ordering, and it wasn't really juicy at all. The egg: it was $2 extra but I wanted the egg. It was completely cooked through, with the yolk like what you'd find in a hardboiled egg. I wasn't asked about doneness for the egg either, but any other place I've ordered an egg with a burger, it's usually runny. The shadowless fries: fine, no comments in particular. Pretty salty, not terribly exciting. Though I think I just don't like poutine style fries in general, and keep ordering variations in an attempt to change my mind.
Ordered a variety, review below Duck fat fries - (2/5)mid, under seasoned, Sriracha aioli was lacking the punch and flavor Pork belly bao bun- (2/5)not enough flavor, more bun, less stuffing Popcorn chicken - (4/5) was good, the honey could have been hotter Kimchi fried rice - (3.5/5) good taste, not so spicy, rice felt a little undercooked Drinks- thousand cuts with mezcal was too sweet overall
