About San Tung
San Tung is a well-regarded Chinese restaurant situated at 1031 Irving Street in San Francisco, California. As a prominent establishment in the local Chinese Restaurant category, San Tung has garnered significant attention and a loyal customer base, evident from the consistently long queues, especially during weekend afternoons. If you're a local resident seeking a popular and authentic Chinese dining experience, San Tung is a place that frequently comes up in conversations and recommendations.
The environment at San Tung is described by a recent visitor as a "typical old Chinese restaurant." While this suggests a no-frills, traditional setting rather than a modern or upscale ambiance, the reviewer also noted that the interior appeared to be clean and well-maintained ("cleaned and taken care of"). This indicates that while the decor might be classic and unpretentious, the restaurant prioritizes cleanliness, which is a crucial aspect for a comfortable dining experience. Customers should likely expect a bustling and functional dining area focused on the food rather than elaborate aesthetics. The practice of shared tables, as mentioned by one reviewer who sat with another party, suggests that the restaurant aims to maximize seating capacity, especially during peak hours. While this might not appeal to everyone seeking a private dining experience, it seems to be a common occurrence and generally accepted by patrons eager to try San Tung's popular dishes.
The service at San Tung is consistently praised for its efficiency and friendliness, even amidst the high volume of customers and the long wait times. One reviewer specifically mentioned that the servers were "very nice and fast," which is particularly impressive considering the restaurant's popularity and the potential for a chaotic atmosphere. The ability of the servers to accurately identify dishes even when customers are seated at shared tables demonstrates a good level of organization and attention to detail. The fact that food is served "very fast and fresh" further highlights the efficiency of the kitchen and the commitment to delivering quality despite the speed of service. This suggests that San Tung has a well-oiled system in place to handle the crowds and ensure a relatively quick turnaround without compromising the freshness of their food.
San Tung's popularity is largely attributed to its standout features, particularly its highly acclaimed dishes. The "dry chicken wings" are frequently mentioned as a must-try and a signature item that draws many customers. While the specific preparation and flavor profile of these wings are not detailed in the provided reviews, their repeated mention as a popular dish suggests they are exceptionally crispy and seasoned to perfection ("crispy and just seasoned correctly and authentic"). Other popular dishes include dumplings, garlic green beans, and black bean noodles, indicating a diverse menu with well-received options beyond just the chicken wings. However, one reviewer noted that the black bean noodles were "on the salty side," which is a point of consideration for those sensitive to sodium levels. The fact that customers often order a variety of these popular items and sometimes end up ordering too much, leading to takeout, speaks to the appealing nature and generous portion sizes of the dishes.
A significant feature of San Tung, especially appreciated in the current economic climate, is its affordability. One reviewer explicitly stated, "The price is so cheap considering the inflation," highlighting the value for money that San Tung offers. This combination of delicious, authentic food, generous portions, and reasonable prices is undoubtedly a major factor contributing to the restaurant's enduring popularity. For local diners looking for a satisfying meal that doesn't break the bank, San Tung appears to be an excellent option.
While no specific promotional information such as discounts or special offers is mentioned in the provided reviews, the consistent value proposition of large portions at affordable prices could be considered an ongoing draw for customers. The restaurant's popularity itself, evidenced by the long wait times, suggests that word-of-mouth and the quality of the food are the primary drivers of business rather than explicit promotions. To inquire about any potential current or upcoming specials, it would be best to contact San Tung directly via phone at (415) 242-0828 or +1 415-242-0828.
One practical consideration for potential diners is the parking situation around San Tung's Irving Street location. As noted by a returning customer, parking is "very limited," and it might be necessary to circle the block multiple times or park a few blocks away. This is a common challenge in many popular San Francisco neighborhoods, and it's advisable for those planning to drive to factor in extra time for finding parking, especially during peak hours. Alternatively, utilizing public transportation might be a more convenient option for some.
In summary, San Tung is a highly sought-after Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, known for its authentic and flavorful dishes, particularly the popular dry chicken wings. While the environment is described as a typical, older Chinese restaurant, it is noted for its cleanliness. The service is commendable for its speed and friendliness, even when the restaurant is crowded. The generous portion sizes and affordable prices offer excellent value. While parking can be challenging, the overall positive dining experience, driven by the quality and taste of the food, makes San Tung a consistently popular choice for locals craving authentic Chinese cuisine. If you're prepared for a potential wait, San Tung promises a satisfying and worthwhile culinary adventure.

Customer Reviews
We came here on a weekend afternoon. The line was super long and we waited about an hour before getting in. The servers were very nice and fast. We had to sit on a big table with someone else, but that wasn’t an issue. They were able to recognize the dishes even though we sat together. The interior looks like a typical old Chinese restaurant, but you can tell that it was cleaned and taken care of. The food was served very fast and fresh. It’s crispy and just seasoned correctly and authentic. The price is so cheap considering the inflation. It’s popular for a reason. We ended up taking out a lot because we ordered too much. The portion was so big.
I've been here a few times, but the last time was before the pandemic. The food is as I remembered. The dishes are good. Everything came out hot and fast. I would say the longest wait time for one of our dishes was 10 mins. The parking situation is just like how I remembered it. Very limited. We circled a few times but eventually found parking a couple of blocks away. We ordered the popular dishes which includes the dry chicken wings, dumplings, garlic green beans, and the black bean noodles. We also ordered the fried fish. We thought the black bean noodles were on the salty side. Overall a solid 4 stars.
Dry fried chicken flavor was good, meat a bit dry and overcooked. Used to be very juicy inside and crispy outside. String beans were excellent. Pot stickers and black bean noodles were also very good. Lots of meat and seafood in the black bean noodles. Long line outside and put your name on the sign in board. The line moved pretty fast. Servers were efficient seating customers.
Loved the place. Not anything fancy but good food. I was so happy when I was able to order salt & pepper shrimp, which wasn’t on the menu. Their wings are definitely great - crispy and flavorful. Great portions and loved the casual atmosphere.
Best chicken wings in the city! Definitely pair them with black bean sauce noodles, a side of hot and sour soup and walnut prawns. Delicious! Expect a long at peak hours.
