About Sal Tang's

Sal Tang's is a Chinese restaurant situated at 521 Hicks Street in the vibrant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. As a Chinese Restaurant, Sal Tang's presents a distinctive dining experience, offering a menu that reimagines classic American Chinese cuisine with a touch of finesse. You can contact them at (718) 986-6976 or via their mobile number +1 718-986-6976.

The ambiance of Sal Tang's is described by patrons as leaning towards "strongly American Chinese" yet with an "upscale" and "good nostalgic" feel. One reviewer likened the vibe to a "romantic neighborhood spot in SATC," suggesting a "cozy yet sexy atmosphere." However, it's important to note that the interior can be quite lively, with one customer mentioning it is "very loud inside" and that "the tables are packed together," potentially making it "hardly a cozy place to eat" for those seeking a quieter dining experience. This contrasts with a previous establishment at the same location, which was remembered as a "much more welcoming space."

In terms of its culinary features, Sal Tang's aims to elevate familiar American Chinese dishes. A significant highlight for one reviewer was the "chicken wings that taste like USese popcorn chicken but WHOLE WINGS of it," which was enthusiastically recommended. The "fried rice" also received high praise. Notably, another customer stated that "every dish is cooked and seasoned perfectly," instilling confidence in the overall quality and consistency of the menu. This positive sentiment was echoed by the fact that their toddler "LOVED every dish we ordered, too," suggesting the restaurant's appeal to a wide range of palates, including younger diners.

However, not all dishes received universal acclaim. One customer expressed disappointment with the "beef pancake," finding it "too salty and sweet" to their liking, rendering both the pancake and the beef inedible for them. On a more positive note, the same reviewer "really liked the salad and the crispy tofu," specifically mentioning the "good dressing" on both.

Overall, Sal Tang's appears to be a "great spot for every age and occasion," successfully blending a "neighborhoody" feel with a sense of being "special." The positive reviews highlight the flavorful and well-executed dishes, particularly the unique chicken wings and the fried rice, as well as the appealing and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere. While the noise level and closely packed tables might not suit everyone, the restaurant seems to have cultivated a strong following among locals who appreciate its inventive approach to classic Chinese American cuisine. The positive experiences of multiple diners, including the enjoyment of the food by a toddler, suggest a broad appeal and a commitment to quality in most of their offerings. For local users in Brooklyn seeking a Chinese restaurant with a distinctive ambiance and a creative menu, Sal Tang's presents a compelling option worth exploring.

I really liked the salad and the crispy tofu. Good dressing on both of them. The beef pancake disappointed me, it was too salty and sweet, and I could take neither the pancake nor the beef. The ambiance is strongly American Chinese and upscale in a good nostalgic way. However, it is very loud inside and the tables are packed together, so it's hardly a cozy place to eat. I had eaten at a restaurant that used to be in the same location and it was a much more welcoming space.

Everything about this place is so good. The vibe is giving a romantic neighborhood spot in SATC, full of cozy yet sexy atmosphere. And the dishes resemble classic Chinese American cuisine but with a twist and extreme finesse. The highlights for me were the chicken wings that taste like Taiwanese popcorn chicken but WHOLE WINGS of it (yummm) and the fried rice. But every dish is cooked and seasoned perfectly, so you really can’t go wrong with anything here. My toddler LOVED every dish we ordered, too. This is a great spot for every age and occasion. It’s equally neighborhoody and special. I’ll be returning soon!

Finally a Chinese sit-down restaurant in the neighborhood of Cobble Hill. I came on their grand opening day to an elevated Chinese-American restaurant. There was no wait at 6pm when I stopped by, but when I came back at 7pm, we had to wait 45 minutes until we got seated. They do have a small waiting area where you can have some drinks. I ended up trying all three cocktails on the menu: Lychee Martini ($16), Sunset Spritz ($14), and Golden Vesper ($15) while the fiance had the Black Duck Porter ($10). The lychee was absolutely delicious that I could've easily had so many of these; it's sweet, refreshing, and got me a good buzz. I found the golden vesper came with a bitter aftertaste, but decent. I'd pass for the sunset spritz, but I'm not a spritz girly. For food, we started off with a Hot & Sour Soup ($6) and Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings ($13). Both of these were delicious and flavorful. Nothing is more comforting than a hot and sour soup while the wings were crispy and flavorful --extra delicious considering I usually prefer a saucy wing to dry-rub. I would order both of these again. For the main entrees, we got the Sweet & Sour Pork ($20) and General Tso's Sesame Chicken ($22) with a side of White Rice ($2). Both of these dishes were saucy, which made them taste quite similar. The portions are pretty small, especially for the price. I was underwhelmed by the repeating flavor though and wished I ordered a different item. Unfortunately, these items were recommended by our waiter since our party had a shellfish allergy, so we were a bit more limited. Sadly, these two dishes fell a bit short for me. At the end of the meal, we were given a classic fortune cookie. Overall, the meal was decent but I found everything too pricey. I grew up eating Chinese food, so this felt catered to the non-Asians in the neighborhood. I appreciate the welcome to Cantonese food in the neighborhood, but hope to see more variety in the future with better pricing.

Sal Tang’s is an awesome addition to the neighborhood. Cozy vibes inside and welcoming, attentive service. Perfect ambiance for a date night at the bar or a group dinner where you can share lots of dishes. The lychee martini hit the spot straight off and was a perfect balance to flavorful savory apps like the wings, egg roll, wontons, and soup (all left us craving more for days after). The dinner highlights were the crystal shrimp, orange beef and shrimp lo mein. Can’t wait to get back and explore more of the menu!

Solid neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The scallion pancake was very good. I always wondered what an egg roll from a good restaurant would taste like, and now I know. It’s good, but I’d probably say try the dumplings or another appetizer if it’s your first time. The general tso’s chicken was pretty good, not quite up the the style that I prefer, which is classic Szechuan style like the old school restaurants in Chinatown, but still tasty none the less. Had a nice red blend of red wine, Grenache & Syrah I believe. Staff was very friendly and attentive. I’m not dying to come back again immediately, however, when my friends mention it, I will absolutely dine again at Sal Tang’s.
