About 祥德齋 XIANG DE ZHAI

祥德齋 XIANG DE ZHAI, located at 3255 Hwy 7 in Markham, within First Markham Place, is a Chinese restaurant specializing in traditional Tianjin cuisine. As a unique Chinese eatery, it stands out as one of the more popular stalls in the complex, offering a taste of Tianjin's distinctive culinary traditions.

A highlight of 祥德齋 XIANG DE ZHAI is their freshly made jianbing pancakes, a popular Tianjin street food. Customers describe the jianbing as crunchy and sizeable, with the option to have it hot and spicy. Another notable item is their savory tofu pudding, which is served with plenty of peanut butter sauce. While these dishes are considered delicious, one reviewer noted that the price for the duo was comparable to a large platter from a nearby establishment.

For those looking for a quick bite, the restaurant offers the Jiang Bang Savoury Crepe. There are reportedly three different types of crepes available, featuring a savory side and another side with a sweet Hoi Sin-like sauce. One version, the #1, includes parsley and egg and is folded with crispy flatbread inside. Customers have the option to substitute dough fritters. These crepes are described as piping hot, as they are made fresh on a griddle, and one crepe is substantial enough to serve two people for $5.99, with additional charges for adding meat.

Beyond their specialties, 祥德齋 XIANG DE ZHAI also offers a variety of other dishes, including noodles and dumplings, providing a broader range of Tianjin flavors to explore.

The service at 祥德齋 XIANG DE ZHAI is described as quick and efficient, catering to those looking for a fast meal. Interestingly, one reviewer humorously mentioned that even the cashier has a "snarky attitude like a street vendor," perhaps adding to the authentic street food vibe of the Tianjin offerings.

If you are in the Markham area, particularly visiting First Markham Place, and are interested in trying authentic Tianjin cuisine, 祥德齋 XIANG DE ZHAI comes recommended. I was surprised to find Xiang De Zhai to be one of more popular stalls at First Markham Place. They serve traditional Tianjin bites & pastries including the traditional jianbing pancakes and tofu pudding. Even the cashier has a snarky attitude like a street vendor. Freshly made, the crunchy jianbing is a sizeable bite that we got hot and spicy. The tofu pudding was savory with plenty of peanut butter sauce. Both tasted pretty delicious although the price for this duo was about the same as a huge platter nearby!

Quick eat. Tried the Jiang Bang Savoury Crepe. There are three different types of crepes. One side is savoury, the other side is sweet Hoi Sin sauce almost. I got the #1. One side had some parsley and egg. It's also folded with some crispy flatbread inside. You have the option of putting dough fritters instead. Basically, it can serve 2 for $5.99. if you add additional ingredients like meat, it will cost a bit more. It's piping hot as it's made on the griddle. The place also has a variety of other dishes from noodles to dumplings. Recommend to try Tianjin cuisine. Service was quick and efficient.

Ordered a beef pie which turned out to be more like a "beef taco." The beef inside was delicious and the crepe outside was just ok, with the thickness being its downfall. I wish it were thinner and fresher. I've also ordered jianbings here and they are freshly made (made in front of you, in fact). I don't speak any Chinese languages so the lady making the jiangbings often translates to the cashier for me. Not a huge deal, but if I have questions or want to do more customizations to my order, I can imagine it to more of an issue.

The Chinese crepe here is probably one of the best I’ve had. They are really big as you can tell from the pic, the flavour is was a bit bland, you could order more toppings. If you like Chinese crepes, this place is a must try. It’s unique in the sense that it’s super-sized but still well constructed. The noodles with sauce were also very tasty! Everything is made fresh to order.

Really surprised!!! First time to try traditional Chinese crepes. It is so…yummy. Crispy inside, taste and gradients are well balanced. Sesame noodle is different from we usually taste in Szechuan restaurant, not 100% my favorite but it’s good to try.
