Welcome to Rice King, your local Chinese restaurant situated at 8310 Pendleton Pike in Indianapolis, Indiana (zip code 46226). As a Chinese restaurant in the Indianapolis area, Rice King strives to provide a diverse menu of familiar and comforting Chinese dishes for local residents and visitors alike. Based on recent customer feedback, experiences at Rice King appear to be somewhat varied. One customer, who previously frequented Rice King as an alternative during another restaurant's renovation, reported a significant decline in the quality of their recent order. This particular customer ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken Combination Meal, which typically includes an egg roll, along with a side order of a shrimp egg roll and a drink. The review detailed several issues with the meal, including overcooked chicken that was visually unappetizing, overly fried and greasy rice, and a greasy, soggy egg roll. Furthermore, the sweet and sour sauce was described as having an unusual, lumpy, jello-like consistency. The only item the customer found satisfactory was the shrimp egg roll, noting that it was freshly fried and larger than before, although still greasy. The customer also mentioned the price of a 16.9floz Dr. Pepper being $2.75, which they felt was high.

This same customer indicated that while previous visits to Rice King had been positive, this recent experience was highly disappointing, leading them to reconsider future visits and potentially opt for a longer wait at their preferred alternative restaurant for guaranteed freshness. This suggests that while Rice King may have offered satisfactory meals in the past, consistency in food quality might be a concern for some patrons.

However, another customer shared a much more positive experience, highlighting a long-standing appreciation for Rice King. This reviewer mentioned that they had been searching for a restaurant comparable to the now-closed Hong Kong Inn and found Rice King to be remarkably similar. In fact, they discovered that the staff at Rice King had previously worked at Hong Kong Inn, further solidifying the connection in their mind. This customer specifically praised Rice King for its fresh rice, excellent chop suey, and egg rolls that consistently avoid a doughy texture. This positive review suggests that Rice King may excel in certain classic dishes and maintain a level of quality that resonates with those familiar with the Hong Kong Inn's style of cooking.

Considering these contrasting reviews, it appears that Rice King might offer a range of Chinese-American dishes, with some customers finding certain items to be of high quality and reminiscent of a beloved local establishment. The menu likely includes popular choices such as sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, and various types of egg rolls. Given the mention of chop suey in a positive light, it's reasonable to assume this is also a featured dish.

Regarding the environment and services, the information provided is limited to the restaurant's name, address, and phone numbers. We can infer that Rice King likely offers standard Chinese restaurant services such as dine-in, takeout, and potentially delivery, although delivery is not explicitly mentioned in the provided text. The atmosphere and ambiance of the restaurant are not described in the reviews, so potential customers would need to visit or inquire directly to gain insight into the dining environment.

In terms of features, the positive review points to the freshness of ingredients, particularly the rice, and the quality of specific dishes like chop suey and their non-doughy egg rolls. The negative review, however, raises concerns about the freshness and preparation methods for other dishes like the sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. The larger size of the shrimp egg rolls was noted as a recent change.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided text. Local users interested in any special offers or discounts at Rice King are advised to contact the restaurant directly at (317) 542-7797 or +1 317-542-7797 to inquire.

In conclusion, Rice King is a Chinese restaurant located on Pendleton Pike in Indianapolis. While one recent customer experienced significant issues with the quality and freshness of their meal, another long-time patron praises the restaurant for its similarities to the Hong Kong Inn, particularly highlighting the fresh rice, excellent chop suey, and well-prepared egg rolls. Potential customers may want to consider these differing perspectives when deciding to dine at or order from Rice King. It might be beneficial to inquire about the freshness of specific dishes when placing an order, especially based on the recent negative feedback regarding previously cooked food. For those seeking a taste reminiscent of the Hong Kong Inn, Rice King may be a worthwhile option to explore.

Let me start with saying that this was my go to Chinese restaurant when Foon Yings was under construction for almost a year. But that has ended with this one meal alone. My go to order is Sweet and Sour Chicken Combination Meal, which includes an egg roll and I also order a shrimp egg roll on the side w/ a drink. This meal was extremely disappointing, after paying almost $17 for the food alone and then tipping $4 for what I thought was good service I feel bamboozled. I believe my entire meal was an old meal from a previous day. The chicken was OVERCOOKED and very displeasing to the eye. Truthfully they look like dried up chitterlings. The fried rice was extra fried and greasy. The egg roll that came with the meal was GREASY and SOGGY. The sweet and sour sauce was like jello and lumpy, which is odd because that is not the consistency of sauce. The only thing I was pleased with and ate was the shrimp egg roll which was still greasy because it came fresh out the grease, but they are now making larger egg rolls I noticed since Foon Yings reopened their establishment. The pricing was okay, though they charged me $2.75 for a 16.9floz Dr. Pepper. I may be looking at this from a petty pov, but in this economy I think sodas should stay in a reasonable price range. Again I was excited to get the food so at the time of purchase it did not matter - but now I’m dissatisfied with my choices. All in all I would say proceed with caution when coming to this restaurant. Previous visits were good and up until today I have never been so disappointed. Next time I will just wait the 90mins to get FRESH Foon Yings.

I always loved the Hong Kong Inn and searched for years to find a place almost as good. Then I found Rice King. The food is so similar to Hong Kong Inn that I asked if they knew of the place. They worked there in those days! No place else for me! Freshest rice, great chop suet, and egg rolls that never taste doughy.

Ordered Beef Mongolian and a shrimp egg roll food was not bad. However the beef wasn’t as tender as I liked flavor was good 👍🏽 and the egg roll was very salty and oily

I asked for shrimp fried rice, but had no color, no veggies except onion and like a teaspoon of chives. Both the presentation and taste were not good. It looked dead. I added hot sauce and still had no delicious taste. It was not tasty and worst fried rice I had. It was also very greasy. I will not go back.
