About Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge

Welcome to Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge, located at 222 NW 4th Ave in Portland, Oregon. This establishment operates as a Chinese Restaurant and also features a bar, the Ming Lounge, offering a combination of dining and beverage services to its patrons. You can contact Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge at (503) 226-4388 or their mobile number, +1 503-226-4388, for inquiries or to make reservations.

Based on the available customer reviews, the environment of Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge appears to be somewhat unique, evoking a sense of nostalgia for classic Chinese restaurants. One reviewer mentioned that the restaurant "transported me back in the day when I first went into a Chinese restaurant," suggesting a traditional or perhaps older-style décor. The presence of the Ming Lounge indicates a separate or integrated bar area where patrons can enjoy alcoholic beverages. This dual nature of the establishment as both a cafe and a lounge contributes to its overall ambiance, potentially attracting a diverse clientele looking for both food and drinks. However, specific details about the décor, seating arrangements, or overall atmosphere are not extensively described in the provided reviews, leaving some aspects of the environment open to individual interpretation upon visiting.

The services offered at Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge include both dining and bar service. One positive aspect highlighted in the reviews is the prompt and attentive service. One customer mentioned being impressed with the service, noting that they received waters and menus quickly after being seated, and their meals arrived approximately 15 minutes after ordering. This suggests efficient and responsive service from the waitstaff. Additionally, the presence of a bartender, specifically named Heather, who is knowledgeable about "booze" and makes a "mean bloody mary," indicates a well-equipped and capable bar service within the Ming Lounge. This suggests that Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge caters not only to those seeking a meal but also to those interested in enjoying cocktails and other alcoholic beverages in a lounge setting.

However, a significant and concerning aspect of the services, as reported in one detailed review, involves serious food safety issues. This customer recounted a deeply negative experience with two dishes, the chicken chop suey and the chicken egg foo young, stating that the chicken in both dishes was "spoiled/rotten" and smelled "rancid." The reviewer explicitly mentioned the sour taste and the need to spit out the food due to its poor quality. The attempt to salvage the dishes by removing the chicken was deemed futile due to the presence of flakes of spoiled chicken throughout. This incident led to feelings of nausea and loss of appetite for the customer. Furthermore, this was not an isolated incident for this reviewer, as they recalled a similar issue with a previously ordered scallion beef dish that had a "slimy and overly velveted" texture. These reports raise serious concerns about the restaurant's food quality control and safety practices.

The features of Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge include the serving of "classic dishes," which might appeal to those seeking traditional American-Chinese cuisine. The reviewer who experienced the food safety hazard expressed a desire to love the restaurant precisely because it serves these types of dishes, which are becoming less common. This suggests that the menu might offer a nostalgic selection of familiar Chinese-American fare. The presence of a well-regarded bartender and the availability of drinks like the "mean bloody mary" are also notable features, highlighting the bar aspect of the establishment. However, the severe food quality and safety issues reported by one customer cast a significant shadow over these potentially positive features.

The stark contrast between the positive feedback regarding the service and the deeply concerning report of spoiled food creates a challenging overall picture. While the promptness and attentiveness of the waitstaff and the skill of the bartender are commendable, the potential health risks associated with serving spoiled food cannot be overlooked. The reviewer who experienced the food safety issues strongly urged the restaurant to address these problems, emphasizing the need for improved food quality control. This suggests that while some aspects of the service are satisfactory, the fundamental aspect of providing safe and fresh food is a critical area requiring immediate attention.

Regarding promotional information, the provided data does not include any specific details about current specials, discounts, or promotions offered by Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge. Customers interested in learning about any ongoing offers, happy hour specials in the Ming Lounge, or any featured dishes would need to contact the restaurant directly at the provided phone numbers or inquire in person. Exploring their online presence, if available, such as a website or social media profiles, might also provide information on promotions or special events.

In conclusion, Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge in Portland, Oregon, offers a combination of a Chinese restaurant serving classic dishes and a bar, the Ming Lounge, known for its cocktails. While one reviewer praised the prompt and attentive service and the quality of the drinks, another customer reported serious food safety hazards, including spoiled and rancid chicken in multiple dishes, leading to illness. This significant concern about food quality control overshadows the positive aspects of the service and the potential appeal of classic menu items and a well-regarded bar. Potential customers should be aware of these conflicting reports when considering dining or having drinks at Republic Cafe and Ming Lounge. It is crucial for the restaurant to address the reported food safety issues to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all patrons.

Food Safety Hazard! Ordered a chicken chop suey and chicken egg foo young. The chicken was spoiled/rotten and smelled rancid. Didn't notice until taking a bite since it was covered in sauce. Had to spit out because of how sour it was! Tried to salvage the dish by picking out the chicken but realized it was in vain since there were flakes of it already mixed all over. Same problem with the egg foo young. Felt nauseous afterwards and lost my appetite. I experienced a similar situation before when ordering a scallion beef dish, the texture was slimy and overly velveted, but thought it was a one-off. I really wish this restaurant the best because I want to love it, there's not many places like this anymore that serves these classic dishes, but unfortunately the food quality control and safety issues really need to be addressed.

I was so impressed with the service, my partner and I had just sat down and we got waters and menus. Our meals came about 15 minutes after we ordered our meals. The bartender I had, Heather, knows her booze and makes a mean bloody mary. I would definitely recommend trying this restaurant/bar.

It's definitely a dive, but thia is the place for late night American-style Chinese. My man and I were super hungry and kinda forgot to eat dinner. There was nowhere else really open nearby that wasn't a bar, so we went here. He got ginger mushroom beef and I got a combo plate with fried shrimp 🍤, pork lo mein and egg foo young. Pretty damn tasty. Egg foo young and shrimp were *chef's kiss*. The lo mein didn't have much taste honestly, but it was much better cold the next morning. Would go again!

A vintage treasure trove of old school Chinese American food. If the walls could talk. The Ming Lounge completes the dreamy experience. Don’t miss out on a magical Portland icon. Cheers !

Mings is special as one of the last Chinese American restaurants and dive bars in a Chinatown that used to be rife with them. That they also throw diy shows makes it an irreplaceable diamond in the gentrified ruff.
