About Red Star Chinese Restaurant

Welcome to Red Star Chinese Restaurant, a venerable establishment in Singapore's vibrant culinary scene. As a distinguished Chinese Restaurant, Red Star specializes in authentic Cantonese cuisine, offering a delightful journey back in time with its nostalgic ambiance and traditional culinary practices. For local users seeking a genuine taste of classic Chinese flavors, Red Star stands as a testament to heritage and quality.

Stepping into Red Star Chinese Restaurant is akin to entering a time capsule. The environment exudes a charm reminiscent of the 1960s, a period when Cantonese restaurants held a special place in Singapore's social fabric. The expansive dining hall, adorned with familiar décor such as cloth-draped chairs with metal frames, patterned tablecloths, and classic carpeting, creates a warm and informal atmosphere. Many patrons fondly recall the ceiling decorations, which have remained unchanged since the restaurant first opened its doors, adding a layer of historical significance to the dining experience. This unique setting offers a departure from modern, minimalist aesthetics, providing a comforting and familiar backdrop for enjoying a meal.

The service at Red Star is a key highlight, often described as friendly and attentive, embodying a traditional Hong Kong style of hospitality. One of the restaurant's enduring features is its pushcart dim sum service. Waitresses navigate the dining hall with carts laden with a tempting array of freshly prepared dim sum dishes, allowing diners to select their desired items as the carts pass by. This interactive and engaging approach to dim sum dining is a nostalgic experience that many cherish and is becoming increasingly rare in Singapore. The staff are generally noted for their willingness to assist and create a welcoming environment for diners, including families with children.

Red Star's culinary offerings are rooted in authentic Cantonese recipes, with a strong emphasis on fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. The restaurant is particularly renowned for its dim sum, which includes popular classics such as Siew Mai (pork dumplings), Har Gow (prawn dumplings), Chee Cheong Fun (steamed rice rolls), and a variety of other savory and sweet delicacies. Reviews suggest that while some dishes maintain their consistent quality, others might reflect a more traditional, less contemporary palate. Nevertheless, the commitment to preserving original recipes is a significant part of Red Star's charm and appeal to those seeking familiar and comforting flavors.

Beyond dim sum, Red Star's menu features a comprehensive selection of classic Cantonese dishes. This includes flavorful roasted meats, fresh seafood preparations, nourishing soups, and a variety of vegetable and meat entrees. Some signature dishes that have garnered praise include the suckling pig, various fresh shrimp dishes, and traditional Cantonese staples. The menu aims to provide a wide range of options, catering to different tastes and preferences within the realm of Cantonese cuisine. While the restaurant strives to maintain its traditional taste, it also offers a hearty and satisfying dining experience.

For those considering a visit to Red Star Chinese Restaurant, it is advisable to make a reservation, especially on weekends and public holidays, where securing a table can be challenging. Weekday visits might offer a less crowded experience. The restaurant also caters to larger gatherings and group events, often providing special arrangements for such occasions. For the convenience of local users, Red Star offers delivery services, ensuring that the same quality and taste can be enjoyed at home. They utilize insulated packaging to maintain the freshness and warmth of the food during delivery. There might also be special offers or promotions available for delivery orders, particularly for purchases above a certain value.

Located at Block 54 Chin Swee Road, #07-23, Singapore 160054, Red Star Chinese Restaurant is somewhat tucked away but remains a beloved destination for those seeking an authentic and nostalgic Cantonese dining experience. I have been coming here since I was in college. Let me tell you the quality and portion size has not changed one bit which I appreciate. I typically get the general tso chicken dinner platter which is like $12 and it comes with the chicken, shrimp fried rice and an egg roll. My food was delicious! I could drink the sauce for the chicken because it’s so good. Since they give you a good amount this usually lasts me a couple of days. Also, the woman that was working the front when I came in was so sweet. Plus I got my food in about 10min or so. Highly recommend this restaurant if you want delicious and affordable Chinese food.

Clean, quick, and tasty food. I love their shrimp fried rice with added fried egg. The amount they give you is insane compared to others. The box is so heavy.
