About R & G Lounge

Step into the distinctive world of R & G Lounge, a highly regarded Chinese restaurant located at 631 Kearny St in the heart of San Francisco's historic Chinatown. Falling under the Chinese Restaurant category, R & G Lounge is frequently lauded as a premier destination for authentic Cantonese cuisine, offering not only exceptional food but also a truly unique and memorable dining experience from the moment you arrive. Its reputation extends beyond just the local area, attracting visitors seeking a top-tier Cantonese culinary adventure.

One of the standout features of R & G Lounge is its unique environment. Upon arrival, guests are often led to the "underground part" of the restaurant, a space that one reviewer described as feeling like "entering another city." This subterranean dining area adds an element of intrigue and novelty to the experience, setting it apart from typical restaurant settings. The ambiance of this underground space is not explicitly detailed, but the description suggests a distinct and perhaps captivating atmosphere that enhances the overall dining experience, making it more than just a meal but a mini-adventure.

The service at R & G Lounge is consistently praised for its excellence. One reviewer specifically highlighted the waiter's patience and helpfulness, particularly in assisting a diner whose English was not their first language in choosing dishes. This level of attentive and considerate service underscores a commitment to ensuring all guests feel welcome and comfortable. Furthermore, the tradition of welcoming diners with tea showcases a thoughtful and hospitable approach, setting a positive tone for the meal. The staff's friendliness, even when the restaurant is packed, as noted by another reviewer, further contributes to the positive dining atmosphere.

The cuisine at R & G Lounge is the primary reason for its strong reputation, with one reviewer declaring it "the best Cantonese restaurant in San Francisco." The menu features a variety of Cantonese specialties, several of which have received enthusiastic endorsements. The duck is highlighted as "delicious," suggesting a mastery of this classic Cantonese dish, known for its flavorful and often crispy preparation. The prawns with honey walnuts are another highly recommended item, praised for the "wonderful" combination of flavors. This dish, a popular Cantonese delicacy, typically balances the sweetness of honey with the crunch of walnuts and the savory taste of fresh prawns.

Another dish that received significant praise is the fried rice, specifically the Golden Rice. One reviewer, who found the fried rice at most Chinese restaurants lacking in flavor, described the Golden Rice at R & G Lounge as having actual flavor and being "one of the best I've had in recent times." This suggests that even seemingly simple dishes are prepared with exceptional attention to detail and taste. In contrast, the lemon chicken, while noted for having good flavor, was described as "overcooked and chewy," indicating a potential inconsistency in the preparation of certain dishes.

The standout dish, however, appears to be a house specialty called Three treasures with black bean sauce. This dish was so highly regarded by one reviewer that they described it as "chefs kiss, top tier!" and stated they "would go back just for that and the rice." This enthusiastic endorsement of a house specialty suggests a unique and exceptionally flavorful creation that is a must-try for anyone visiting R & G Lounge. The combination of "three treasures" (which typically refers to a trio of seafood or meats) with the savory and umami-rich black bean sauce is a classic Cantonese flavor pairing that, when executed well, can be truly outstanding.

The fact that a hotel manager, presumably knowledgeable about local dining options, highly recommended R & G Lounge to a visitor further attests to its strong reputation and consistent quality. Despite being packed on a rainy weekend night, the staff efficiently managed to seat a party of two without a reservation, showcasing their ability to handle busy periods while still providing good service.

For local users in San Francisco seeking an exceptional Cantonese dining experience, R & G Lounge offers a compelling combination of unique ambiance, excellent service, and highly praised cuisine. From the intriguing underground dining area to the patient and welcoming staff, and the delicious array of dishes like the duck, prawns with honey walnuts, and the acclaimed Three Treasures with black bean sauce, R & G Lounge promises a memorable meal. While the lemon chicken received mixed feedback, the overwhelmingly positive reviews for other dishes, particularly the house specialty and the Golden Rice, make it a strong contender for the title of the best Cantonese restaurant in the city.

To experience the unique charm and exquisite flavors of R & G Lounge, local users can visit their location at 631 Kearny St, San Francisco, CA 94108, USA. I found this place through Google Maps recommendations and I want to tell you that it was a unique experience since we arrived. It is the best Cantonese restaurant in San Francisco. We arrived around 8 pm and we didn't have to wait. They took us to the underground part, which is an experience since it seems like you are entering another city. The service was excellent because the waiter was very patient since my English is not the best and he helped me choose the dishes. They welcomed us with tea, which they were very careful to serve. Afterwards, we ordered the duck, which was delicious, and the prawns with honey walnuts, which I also highly recommend because the combination of flavors is wonderful. The dessert was also delicious. Overall, I highly recommend the restaurant because you will eat very well and in a unique way.

Was in town for a weekend. The hotel manager highly recommended this spot. The service was really good. Everyone was very friendly. We didn't have a reservation,it was raining and the place was packed. Fortunately there was just two of us so we were sat at small table for two with no problem. Food was better than most of the Chinese food places we've been to in the last several years. The fried rice actually had flavor and was one of the best I've had in recent times. It was Golden Rice. The lemon chicken had good flavor but was overcooked and chewy. Our favorite was a house specialty called Three treasures with black bean sauce. It was chefs kiss, top tier! Would go back just for that and the rice.

Very busy place. Food was good and enjoyable. The seafood noodles could be more flavorful and have additional pieces of seafood. Some places serve their duck boneless. This one had the bones in, I didn’t mind as I am used to working with my food but for some they might not prefer that.

Overall a good experience and vibe especially downstairs. The house special fried rice was absolutely fantastic. We also really liked the cumin lamb; the meat was very tender and soft. The dish could have been spicier, though. The two other veggie dishes we got were tasty and healthy, albeit slightly forgettable. Make sure to get chili and soy sauce, everything could have used more spice and a bit more salt.

The service was excellent. I went to R&G with a group of colleagues last week. The wait was a little long even though we had reservations. The manager comped our drinks for the long wait. The food was delicious! Definitely better than any of the Chinese food I can get at home. The only thing that was not as expected was the Peking duck. I’m used to the breast meat being deboned, but theirs wasn’t. Our entire group really enjoyed everything we ordered. We left really full!
