About Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant

Welcome to Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant, a long-standing establishment located at 11137 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23601, USA. As a Chinese restaurant with a history in the Newport News community, Port Arthur has reportedly been a "staple go to for several generations," suggesting a deep-rooted presence and perhaps a loyal customer base built over time. This longevity often implies a consistent offering that has resonated with local diners.

Regarding the environment, one reviewer refers to Port Arthur as "an icon in Newport News VA," which could suggest a familiar and perhaps traditional setting. The fact that the "wait staff has even remained the same" over a significant period might contribute to a sense of familiarity and continuity for returning customers. However, specific details about the decor, ambiance, or size of the dining area are not provided in the available reviews. Customers might anticipate a traditional Chinese restaurant setting, but further information would be needed for a more detailed description.

In terms of services, Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant appears to offer both dine-in and takeout options. The mention of wait staff implies that table service is available for those choosing to eat at the restaurant. However, one recent review detailed a significant issue with the speed of service for dine-in customers. They reported that their food took "ages past the time they told us," with an initial estimate of 30 minutes turning into an hour and an additional 15 minutes of waiting. This suggests that while dine-in service is offered, there can be considerable delays in food preparation and delivery to the table, at least on the occasion reported. The same review also noted that they were not provided with utensils or napkins, indicating a potential lapse in basic service provisions.

One of the notable features of Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant, according to a long-time patron, is the quality of specific dishes. They specifically praised the "besssttt, cow mein and wonton soup anywhere." This strong endorsement suggests that these two items might be signature dishes or particularly well-regarded by those familiar with the restaurant. For customers looking for exceptional chow mein or wonton soup in the Newport News area, Port Arthur might be a place to consider based on this feedback.

However, the more recent review paints a less positive picture of the overall experience. The extreme delay in receiving food, even when the restaurant was reportedly "not bombarded with orders," is a significant concern. The fact that the food only came out after another customer demanded a refund due to the long wait further underscores potential issues with kitchen efficiency or order management. While the food was described as "good except for one item," the overall experience was negative enough to deter the customer from ordering again. The lack of utensils and napkins also detracts from the dining experience, whether eating in the restaurant or taking the food to go.

No specific promotional information is mentioned in the provided reviews. Chinese restaurants often offer lunch specials, combination meals, or discounts for certain days or order sizes. Given the lack of recent positive feedback regarding service, it is difficult to ascertain if any current promotions are being offered or if they would enhance the overall customer experience. Local users interested in potential deals should contact the restaurant directly at (757) 599-6474 or +1 757-599-6474 to inquire about any current specials or promotions.

For local users in Newport News, VA, Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant presents a mixed picture. On one hand, it is described as a long-standing and iconic establishment with a history in the community, and its chow mein and wonton soup are highly praised by at least one reviewer. This suggests a potential for quality in certain menu items and a sense of tradition. On the other hand, a recent customer experienced extremely slow service, significant delays in receiving their food, and a lack of basic dining necessities like utensils and napkins. This negative experience, occurring when the restaurant was not particularly busy, raises concerns about the current state of their service and operational efficiency.

In summary, based on the provided customer feedback, Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant in Newport News, VA offers:

  • A long history as a Chinese restaurant in the local community.
  • Dine-in and takeout services.
  • Highly praised chow mein and wonton soup, according to one long-time patron.

However, potential customers should also be aware of the following significant concerns raised by a more recent review:

  • Extremely slow service and long delays in receiving food when dining in.
  • Potential issues with kitchen efficiency and order management.
  • Failure to provide basic dining necessities such as utensils and napkins.
  • An overall negative experience that deterred at least one customer from returning.

Given these contrasting perspectives, local users considering Port Arthur Chinese Restaurant should weigh the positive feedback regarding specific dishes and its historical presence against the serious concerns about slow service and operational issues. It might be prudent to inquire about current wait times and service standards before placing an order or dining in. For information on any potential promotions or the full menu, contacting the restaurant directly is recommended.

Food took ages past the time they told us. Our food only immediately came out after the guy infront of us said he wanted a refund because he had to leave. He said that after asking my husband and I how long we've been there (an hour when they said 30 mins, and then around 15 extra minutes when they said it'll be 7 mins). Food came out good except for one item we got for our grandmother. Needless to say, will not be ordering from here again. They were not bombarded with orders either, and gave us no utensils or napkins.

I've been coming in for years. My family and I have enjoyed plenty of sit down and to-go experiences here. So why 4 stars? I'm starting to see a decline in the quality of the food, and it's getting pricey. I understand most places are in 2025, but you need to keep the food the same if your prices go up. Two of my favorite things are homemade soup fried wonton, they now have the prepackaged hard ones, not good. And authentic Chinese pancakes, they use flour tortillas, identical to what a Mexican restaurant would give you. Huh? I remember getting the duck here and it had a chewier homemade type pancake. I hope they can self-correct because I absolutely love this place.

Best egg drop and wonton soup I’ve had and the food is really tasty! The shrimp fried rice was authentic and reminded me of the old school Chinese rice I grew up on! Chicken is seasoned well thick and juicy. The only Chinese restaurant that I want to go to now

We were in tonight as we are not big into the Superbowl and my husband was craving! There's never a bad meal, and the bonus is we get it again tomorrow! I've said it before and I'll say it again, best Chinese food all around here! The taste and feel of all that warms the soul! Great people, excellent service, warmth all around!
