About 留湘小聚店 Ping‘s Bistro | San Mateo
留湘小聚店 Ping‘s Bistro, located at 2946 S Norfolk St in San Mateo, California, is a Chinese restaurant that has garnered significant praise for its flavorful and authentic Hunan cuisine, with a recent expansion into Yunnan dishes. Known to locals as Ping’s Bistro, this establishment can be contacted at (650) 781-3987 or via their mobile number +1 650-781-3987 for reservations, takeout orders, and inquiries. Based on the enthusiastic reviews from real customers, Ping’s Bistro has established itself as a top-tier Chinese dining destination in the San Mateo area and even the broader Bay Area, appreciated for its delicious food, good service, and authentic regional flavors.
One reviewer simply stated, "Just amazing all around," providing a concise yet powerful endorsement of the overall dining experience at Ping’s Bistro. This sets a high bar and suggests a consistently positive impression across various aspects of the restaurant.
More detailed feedback highlights specific dishes that are particularly noteworthy. The cabbage is described as "savory," and the pork with pepper and mushrooms is lauded as "amazing," indicating flavorful and well-prepared classic Hunan dishes. While one reviewer found the luffah to be undersalted and was not fond of the chicken tomato/potato pot (though acknowledging it was objectively cooked well), the mushroom stir fry is emphatically recommended as a "must get." The cauliflower is praised for being "cooked perfectly," showcasing the kitchen's skill in handling different vegetables. In contrast, the sour fish fillet was considered "mid," suggesting some dishes might be more popular than others.
A long-time patron mentioned that Ping’s Bistro "used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in San Mateo county even before they moved from El Camino to Marina Foods plaza," indicating a consistent level of quality and customer loyalty over time and across different locations. This speaks volumes about the restaurant's ability to maintain its standards and appeal.
Another reviewer appreciated the "lunch specials" and noted that while prices have increased, the food consistently "taste good," suggesting that the quality justifies the cost for many customers.
The service at Ping’s Bistro is also commended, with specific mention of the thoughtful practice of wrapping leftover food for customers instead of just providing to-go boxes. This extra touch demonstrates a commitment to customer convenience and care.
A significant aspect of Ping’s Bistro is its culinary focus. Originally emphasizing Hunan cuisine, the restaurant has seemingly expanded its offerings to include Yunnan food, possibly in response to local demand. While one reviewer noted that the Yunnan dishes might not be entirely "authentic," they still found them to be "delicious." Specific Yunnan-inspired dishes that received praise include the "Farmers Combo" (featuring egg, pork, wood ear mushroom, and other ingredients), the "spicy and sour beef," and the "conch with special mushrooms." This branching out into another regional Chinese cuisine adds to the diversity of the menu and caters to a broader range of palates.
For those who enjoy spicy food, Ping’s Bistro is highlighted for its authentic level of spiciness. Customers are advised that when a dish is described as "original spicy," they should be sure of their tolerance for heat before ordering, as the restaurant does not seem to hold back on the chili. This authenticity in spiciness is a notable feature for those seeking a genuine Hunan culinary experience.
The physical environment of Ping’s Bistro is described as "not large," which may lead to waiting times, particularly on weekends. This suggests that the restaurant's popularity can result in a crowded dining room during peak hours, so local users planning to dine in might need to consider this or make reservations if possible (though reservation policy is not specified). However, the positive reviews generally outweigh this potential inconvenience for many.
One reviewer did express that the prices are now "too high," especially for the frog dishes, yet still maintained a 5-star rating, citing Ping’s Bistro as "still one of the best Chinese food restaurants in the Bay Area." This indicates that despite some concerns about pricing on certain items, the overall quality of the food and dining experience remains exceptional.
Finally, practical information regarding parking is provided: customers can find parking in the rear or side of the building if the parking at the front is too crowded, adding to the convenience of visiting the restaurant.
In summary, 留湘小聚店 Ping‘s Bistro in San Mateo is a highly acclaimed Chinese restaurant specializing in delicious Hunan cuisine, with an expanding selection of flavorful Yunnan dishes. Known for its savory cabbage, amazing pork and pepper mushrooms, must-try mushroom stir fry, and authentic spiciness, Ping’s Bistro offers a diverse and satisfying menu. While the restaurant itself is not large and may experience weekend waits, the good service, generous portions, and overall exceptional food quality make it a favorite among locals and a top recommendation in the Bay Area. Despite some concerns about price increases on certain items, the consistently high ratings reflect the outstanding culinary experience offered. Convenient parking is available at the rear or side. Local users seeking authentic and flavorful Hunan and increasingly Yunnan cuisine in San Mateo should definitely consider a visit to Ping’s Bistro.

Just amazing all around. The cabbage is savory. The pork and pepper/mushrooms are amazing. The luffah was undersalted though. Used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in San Mateo county even before they moved from El Camino to Marina Foods plaza. I loved some of their lunch specials and although they kept on raising prices but at least they taste good. The service is good as they would wrap leftover food for you instead of just throwing you some togo boxes. This place used to focus on Hunan but probably sensing a lack of Yunan cuisine they are branching out to Yunan food. I don't think they are that authentic but at least they are delicious. I really like their Farmers Combo (egg, pork, wood ear mushroom and other stuff), spicy and sour beef, and Iove their conch with special mushrooms. Their spiciness is authentic so when they say original spicy make sure you can hold your spiciness before being gunho about your tolerance to spicy food. The place is not large so you may have to wait in the weekend. I do think the price is too high now especially their frog dishes but I still decided to keep the 5 star rating because it is still one of the best Chinese food restaurants in the Bay Area. Oh you can also find parking in the rear or side if parking at the front is too crowded.
The restaurant was very busy, but we didn’t mind waiting. We had already placed our order while waiting for a table, yet we still had to wait a long time after being seated. Interestingly, the dish labeled as the one with the longest wait time the Matsutake Steamed Egg was actually the first to arrive. The steamed egg itself was unseasoned, but the soy sauce on top completely overpowered the natural aroma of the matsutake, making it overly salty. Meanwhile, the steamed egg lacked flavor. The Organic Cauliflower with Pork Cracklings was quite good, but the Stir-fried Rice Cakes were far too salty, and the rice cakes themselves lacked texture—definitely not recommended. My personal favorite was the Stew Beef Combination in Copper Pot, which had a well-balanced flavor with a subtle hint of mint. It wasn’t overly spicy, and the beef was tender. However, the beef tripe had a strong taste, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. We originally wanted to order fried rice, but it was no longer available. The staff were friendly, but communication could be improved. Perhaps because it was near closing time, we wanted to pack up some food and order a dessert to-go. However, instead of simply giving us a clear yes or no, a staff member spent a long time explaining in a very roundabout way, when all we really needed was a straightforward answer.
Amazing food, very authentic southern China cuisine. Unique. A lot of special ingredients you won’t get in the US. Very nice!
If I wasn't meandering about this plaza, I would not have found this place tucked away in the alley. The lines were what drew my attention and it was PACKED inside. We came back on a Saturday at 6:30PM. Overall wait time for our party of 6 was 45 minutes. To pass the time you can place your order on an iPad in the waiting area. Our drinks came out promptly after sitting down. Food was spicy and super flavorful. Ask the server if you're unsure about the spicy level! Portions were small for the price. But I would come back if I was craving this cuisine and if I had a large group again to order a variety.
