About Peter Chang

Peter Chang is a distinctive Chinese restaurant located at 2816 W Broad St A in Richmond, Virginia (VA 23230), USA. Categorized as a Chinese Restaurant, Peter Chang offers a unique dining experience with a focus on bold flavors, particularly those characteristic of Sichuan cuisine. Patrons can contact the restaurant at phone number (804) 728-1820 or mobile phone +1 804-728-1820 for inquiries or reservations.

Based on customer reviews, the environment at Peter Chang can be described as lively and often crowded. The restaurant's popularity suggests a bustling atmosphere. However, one reviewer noted that the tables might be placed "a bit too close together for some who prefer more privacy." This indicates that while the ambiance is energetic, it might not be ideal for those seeking a quiet or intimate dining experience. Another practical consideration mentioned is that "parking is difficult to find," which is a factor potential diners should be aware of when planning their visit. Despite these points, the overall impression is of a unique Asian-style restaurant that stands out in the Richmond dining scene.

The services offered at Peter Chang likely include dine-in, takeout, and possibly delivery, although delivery is not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. Given its establishment as a restaurant with a physical location and phone contact, dine-in and takeout are expected services. Customers can likely place orders for pickup by calling the provided phone numbers. To confirm the availability of delivery services, it is advisable to contact the restaurant directly.

Peter Chang is characterized by its flavorful and often spicy menu, with several dishes receiving high praise from customers. A popular starter is the "Bubble Pancake," described as "always a good starter" and loved by children. For appetizers, the "Dry-Fried Eggplant" and the "Bamboo Fish" are frequently ordered. These dishes are noted for their seasoning, which includes cilantro and "pretty potent hot pepper flakes" that can be intense for those not accustomed to significant heat. One reviewer cautioned that the spiciness of the Bamboo Fish, even in an appetizer portion, can be quite strong and may overwhelm the palate for the rest of the meal, recommending sticking to the appetizer size for this dish.

The heat level in Peter Chang's dishes is a significant feature, with one reviewer describing it as a "love/ hate thing." They noted that the "hot seasoning is a different kind of hot than a hot sauce," implying a unique and potentially tongue-numbing spiciness characteristic of Sichuan peppercorns. For those sensitive to spice, the menu does offer milder options. The "Golden Mountain of Chicken" or "Mongolian Beef" are specifically mentioned as "very satisfying and 'safe' for kids," indicating they are less spicy and suitable for younger palates. Another less spicy option is the "Eggplant in Garlic Sauce," which is also highlighted as a vegetarian choice and well-liked by one reviewer's wife. While the reviewer personally wouldn't choose it as a main meal, they acknowledged it as a good dish.

Beyond specific dishes, the reviews suggest a diverse menu with "lots of menu items to explore." The soups are generally well-received, with one reviewer stating that "all the soups I've tried are really good." The "Crispy Pork Belly" is also mentioned as "delicious." This variety indicates that Peter Chang offers a range of flavors and textures, catering to different preferences, although a "spicy flare" seems to be a common thread throughout many of the offerings.

Regarding promotional information, the provided reviews do not contain any details about current specials, discounts, or promotions at Peter Chang. Restaurants often have lunch specials, daily deals, or seasonal offerings to attract customers. Local users interested in such information should contact Peter Chang directly via phone or check if they have a website or social media presence where promotions might be advertised. Given the restaurant's popularity, it's possible they have regular specials that are communicated directly to customers or through their online platforms.

In conclusion, Peter Chang in Richmond, VA, offers a unique Asian dining experience with a focus on flavorful and often spicy Sichuan cuisine. Popular dishes include the Bubble Pancake, Dry-Fried Eggplant, Bamboo Fish (with a warning about its intense heat), Golden Mountain of Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and Eggplant in Garlic Sauce. The environment is lively and often crowded, and parking can be challenging. While service was described as "okay" by one reviewer, another found it "good." Peter Chang stands out as a distinctive culinary destination in Richmond, particularly for those seeking bold and authentic flavors. To inquire about takeout, delivery options, or any current promotions, contacting the restaurant directly is recommended.

The servers were okay, they were a bit rude when I dropped my lipstick (not sure why they laughed at me for that) but the food was pretty good. Some plates lacked flavor. It’s a hit or a miss, some days it’s good some days it’s bland. I wouldn’t come back here on a regular basis but only when I’m craving specific dishes I come here. Parking is difficult to find.

I've had dinner at Peter Chang's many times and tried quite a few of the menu items. The Bubble Pancake is always a good starter and the kids love it. Speaking of kids, some of the main dishes pack a spicy tongue numbing punch and children may not be ready for that. For appetizers I always get the Dry-Fried Eggplant and the Bamboo Fish. Those are both similarly seasoned with cilantro and some pretty potent hot pepper🌶️ flakes that will ruin your taste buds for the rest of the dinner if you are not careful. It's a love/ hate thing for me with the heat. Peter Chang's hot seasoning is a different kind of hot than a hot sauce. I literally couldn't taste anything after eating the Bamboo Fish (pictured) dish which I recently ordered as a meal size portion. Stick with the appetizer size portion on the Bamboo Fish. The Golden Mountain of Chicken or Mongolian Beef is very satisfying and "safe" for kids. My wife likes the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (pictured). That's probably one of several vegetarian options. I've tasted it and it's good, but personally I wouldn't make it my main meal. All the soups I've tried are really good. The Crispy Pork Belly is delicious. Lots of menu items to explore, most with a spicy flare. Some of the original charm of Peter Chang's has worn off for me, but it's still a unique Asian style restaurant that stands out in the crowd. Service was good. The restaurant can get pretty crowded and tables are maybe a bit too close together for some who prefer more privacy.

I used to looooove this place but they’ve gotten stingy with portion sizes (at least with delivery). I usually crave their mapo tofu but you should get more than this for $18. It was also weirdly more gelatinous than usual and just tasted like a salty gravy. I hope they go back to the way they used to do things.

First off, we had Madison as our server and she was fantastic! She really cared that we had a good experience and ordered the right items. After reading a slew of recent reviews that were negative on this place I almost didn’t go but I’m definitely glad I did. As Madison pointed out, if you’re coming here for standard Chinese food, you’re probably going to be disappointed because you’re paying twice as much for something you could get at any take out Chinese restaurant. This place specializes in Szechuan cuisine so make sure to order what they do best! We had the dry friend eggplant which was super tasty and I would highly recommend it. Crispy and seasoned to perfection with a slight kick. My only complaint was that the ratio of “toppings” like the green onion and Szechuan peppers was about equivalent to the eggplant. I would prefer to see more of the fried eggplant in there. The pork Bao buns are also amazing! The meat inside is seasoned super well already but the spicy garlic sauce on the side really knocks it out of the park, especially if you like a good kick of heat! Our entree was the three pepper beef which we loved as well! Definitely has a good amount of heat to it but the flavors are delicious! Again my only complaint here is that there was way more veggies and onions than beef which was a little disappointing because I was fishing for meat in the dish. Basically this place didn’t get 5 stars because I thought some of the ratios were off and also because it took a while once we were sat to get a waitress to come over but once we were going everything was very smooth. But as far as the taste, it was awesome! Excited to go back and try more of this menu!

Good god this is literally the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had in my life. Chicken is soggy and bland fried rice has no flavor. The sesame chicken isn’t even breaded.
