About Peking Gourmet (5300 Rivers Ave, N. Charleston)

Welcome to Peking Gourmet, located at 5300 Rivers Ave # 7 in North Charleston, South Carolina. For local residents seeking a taste of authentic New York style Chinese cuisine, Peking Gourmet offers a satisfying takeout experience. While the restaurant may not prioritize dine-in service, it has garnered positive reviews for its flavorful food, generous portions, and reasonable prices, making it a popular choice for a quick and satisfying meal.

Peking Gourmet seems to resonate particularly well with those who appreciate the distinct flavors of New York style Chinese food. One reviewer, originally from New York, explicitly stated that Peking Gourmet "does not disappoint," highlighting the authenticity and quality of their dishes. This endorsement suggests that Peking Gourmet offers a taste that is familiar and satisfying to those accustomed to the Chinese cuisine found in the New York metropolitan area.

Among the popular menu items at Peking Gourmet are the Sweet and Sour Chicken and Sweet and Sour Pork. These classic dishes are mentioned as favorites by a customer and their son, indicating that Peking Gourmet prepares them well and to the liking of multiple generations. The addition of Fried Dumplings as a side order is also a common practice for this reviewer, suggesting that these dumplings are a worthwhile accompaniment to the main courses.

Chinese food is often considered a versatile option for both lunch and dinner, offering a quick and satisfying meal. Peking Gourmet appears to fulfill this role for its customers, providing a convenient takeout service that allows individuals and families to enjoy their favorite Chinese dishes at home. The focus on takeout is further emphasized by a reviewer's observation that the seating is "typical of a restaurant that rarely has customers dining in," reinforcing the idea that Peking Gourmet's strength lies in its efficient and popular takeout service.

Customers have also praised the value offered by Peking Gourmet. One reviewer mentioned ordering three meals for a total of $40, noting that the portions were large and the prices were good. This combination of generous servings and affordable prices makes Peking Gourmet an attractive option for families or individuals looking for a substantial meal without breaking the bank.

The quality of the food itself has received positive feedback. One customer who ordered the Seafood Delight specifically highlighted the inclusion of a lobster tail in their dish and stated that "everything tasted wonderful." This positive assessment of the overall taste and the inclusion of higher-end ingredients like lobster suggests a commitment to providing flavorful and satisfying meals across their menu. The same reviewer also mentioned that their group agreed that Peking Gourmet's food was "probably the best around here," further solidifying its reputation among local Chinese food enthusiasts.

In terms of service, one reviewer noted that the cashier was nice, indicating a friendly interaction during the order pickup process. However, this same reviewer also pointed out a significant wait time of 30 minutes to receive their order. This suggests that while the food quality is high, it might be advisable to call ahead to place orders, especially during busy periods, to minimize waiting times upon arrival.

Regarding the restaurant's atmosphere, one customer described it as "awful" and suggested that turning on the radio might improve the ambiance. This aligns with the earlier observation about the seating being indicative of a primarily takeout-focused establishment. It seems that Peking Gourmet prioritizes the quality of its food and the efficiency of its takeout service over the aesthetics of its dine-in area. Therefore, customers primarily seeking a pleasant dine-in experience might want to consider other options, while those prioritizing delicious takeout at reasonable prices will likely find Peking Gourmet to be a good choice.

Despite the noted wait time and the unappealing atmosphere for dine-in, the positive feedback regarding the food quality, portion sizes, and New York style authenticity suggests that Peking Gourmet excels in what it aims to be: a reliable and delicious Chinese takeout restaurant in North Charleston. The recommendation to call in orders ahead of time is a practical tip for those planning to utilize their services.

In conclusion, Peking Gourmet (5300 Rivers Ave, N. Charleston) offers a taste of authentic New York style Chinese cuisine with a focus on takeout. Local users can expect generous portions, good prices, and flavorful dishes, including popular choices like Sweet and Sour Chicken/Pork and the impressive Seafood Delight with lobster tail. While the dine-in atmosphere may not be a highlight, the quality of the food makes it a recommended option for those seeking a satisfying Chinese meal to enjoy at home. To ensure a smoother experience, calling in your order in advance is advisable. I may be a little biased because I’m a huge Chinese fan, but being from New York, I know good Chinese food when I taste it. Peking Gourmet does not disappoint. The sweet and sour chicken/pork are favorites for me and my son. We also typically add a side of fried dumplings. Chinese food is always a great go to for a quick and satisfying lunch or dinner. The seating is typical of a restaurant that rarely has customers dining in, but takeout is where it’s at! We’ll certainly we back for more.

I ordered 3 meals to go. The prices were good. $40 . Large portions! Our food was great! I had a lobster tail in my seafood delight. Everything tasted wonderful. We all agreed that it was probably the best around here. The cashier was nice. BUT it took 30 minutes to get my food 😒. The atmosphere was awful. Turn on the radio or something. I will go back , but I will call my order in first!

No, no, no and no. Never again. I waited more than an hour then tho they said it will be done in 10 minutes. Once o got my food, it wasn’t fresh, it was cold and hard. I wouldn’t feed this to my worst enemy. Good luck

A girl on a journey to find the best soup broth!!! I wasn’t feeling well over the weekend, and my husband happened to be in the area and picked up some wonton soup from this restaurant—our first time trying it. I have to say, if you’re looking for a soup with flavorful broth, this might be the place! The broth in their chicken wonton soup was exceptional. Unlike many other Chinese and Thai restaurants in the Charleston and Summerville area, where the broth often tastes like plain chicken stock, this soup had a depth of flavor I can’t quite put my finger on—it felt like they added something special to it. The soup was very affordable (around $3 for a small), and they were generous with the wontons. We ordered four smalls, and every container was packed with plenty of wontons. If you’re looking for a delicious, inexpensive soup to warm you up this winter, I highly recommend checking this place out!
