About Oyama BBQ
Welcome to Oyama BBQ, a Chinese restaurant located at 5492 Central Ave, Newark, CA 94560, USA. Categorized as a Chinese Restaurant, Oyama BBQ offers a distinctive dining experience centered around skewer barbecue. This interactive style allows customers to grill their own selection of food at their table, providing a fun and engaging way to enjoy a meal with friends and family. Initial impressions from some customers were positive, highlighting the tasty food and the enjoyable nature of the grilling experience.
As a Chinese Restaurant specializing in BBQ, Oyama BBQ likely offers a variety of meats, seafood, vegetables, and other items that can be skewered and grilled. The concept of grilling at the table is a unique feature that sets it apart from traditional Chinese restaurants. This style often encourages a communal dining experience where everyone can participate in the cooking process and enjoy freshly grilled food directly off the skewers. The initial positive review suggests that the food offered is flavorful and that the overall experience can be quite enjoyable, particularly for those looking for something different and interactive.
Based on the initial positive feedback, the environment at Oyama BBQ seems conducive to a fun and engaging dining experience. The setup likely includes tables equipped with grilling stations, allowing customers to cook their food to their preference. This interactive element can create a lively and social atmosphere, making it a potentially great place for gatherings and casual outings. The initial reviewer mentioned getting "carried away with ordering," which implies a tempting array of choices and an environment where indulging in a variety of grilled items is encouraged.
The primary service offered by Oyama BBQ is the skewer barbecue experience, where customers select their food and grill it themselves at the table. The staff likely provides the raw ingredients, skewers, and any necessary grilling equipment and instructions. One helpful tip from a returning customer suggests ordering in batches to ensure the food is as fresh as possible while eating, indicating a degree of control and customization in the dining process. This also implies that the restaurant provides a continuous supply of fresh skewers for grilling.
A notable feature mentioned in the positive update is the pickled cucumbers, which are described as "so good" and a great accompaniment to the skewers. This suggests that Oyama BBQ offers side dishes that complement the grilled items, enhancing the overall dining experience. Pickled vegetables are a common and refreshing element in many cuisines, often providing a tangy contrast to richer, grilled foods.
However, more recent feedback paints a concerning picture regarding several aspects of Oyama BBQ. One customer expressed significant dissatisfaction, noting a perceived decrease in the amount of food served over time, which the restaurant allegedly stated was normal. This raises concerns about value for money and potential changes in portion sizes. Furthermore, the reviewer mentioned an increasingly unpleasant smell associated with the barbecue and poor hygiene, which are serious issues that could deter potential customers.
The negative review also highlighted significant problems with customer service, specifically citing a waitress with a hat and braids who was described as "very fierce" and treated customers casually, as if they were indebted to her. The reviewer's attempt to report this to the boss was allegedly met with a claim that the boss was unreachable. The incident culminated in the waitress reportedly trying to withhold the receipt, which was only given after the customer insisted. This negative experience led the reviewer, a former generous tipper at the establishment, to leave no tip and predict the restaurant's failure. Additionally, the reviewer mentioned that several friends had similar negative experiences with the same waitress, including an incident that nearly resulted in a fight.
The stark contrast between the initial positive review and the subsequent negative feedback suggests a potential decline in the quality of food, hygiene standards, and customer service at Oyama BBQ. While the interactive skewer BBQ concept and the taste of some items like the pickled cucumbers may have been initial draws, these positive aspects appear to be overshadowed by more recent negative experiences reported by customers. The mention of decreasing food amounts, foul smells, poor hygiene, and aggressive customer service are serious red flags for potential diners.
Given the strongly negative recent feedback, there is no indication of any positive promotional information or ongoing offers for Oyama BBQ. The prevailing sentiment in the latest review suggests that the restaurant is facing significant challenges that are negatively impacting the customer experience. Local users should be aware of these recent concerns when considering dining at Oyama BBQ.
In conclusion, Oyama BBQ in Newark offers a unique skewer barbecue experience that was initially well-received for its tasty food and interactive grilling. However, recent customer reviews raise significant concerns regarding decreasing food portions, poor hygiene, and notably aggressive and unprofessional customer service from at least one waitress. While the pickled cucumbers were highlighted as a positive accompaniment, the overall negative trajectory indicated in the latest feedback suggests that potential customers should approach Oyama BBQ with caution and be aware of the reported issues. Without any positive recent feedback or promotional information, it is difficult to recommend Oyama BBQ based on the currently available reviews.

Customer Reviews
This place was great! We got a little carried away with ordering for two but the food was tasty and it was fun! Update: 1.Suggest ordering in batches so the food is fresher as you're eating. 2.The pickled cucumbers are so good, and goes well with the skewers.
The amount of food was getting smaller and smaller, and they said it was normal. The barbecue was getting smellier and smellier, and the hygiene was not done well. The waitress with a hat and braids was very fierce. She treated customers very casually and talked to her as if she owed him money. I said I would report it to the boss, but he said I couldn't contact the boss. In the end, he even wanted to secretly keep the receipt and didn't give it to me. I said I had to give the receipt before he gave it to me. I used to give the maximum tip when I came here, but this time I was very angry and didn't give any tip. This place is going to fail, so let it go. In addition, many of my friends also said that this waiter was very fierce to the customer, as if she was our customer, and almost got into a fight with my friend last time.
I guess it is an acquired taste for the spice of mostly cumin. We ordered skewers to try: beef, pork, squid, rice, veggie, naan to wrap the protein, scallops, eggplant. It was ok, waiting for the wow but the service was nice and prompt. Nice decor.

This BBQ is among top 3 which I’ve had in CA and WA. I like their eggplants the most. Best one ever! The wine in Chinese traditional container brought me back to the ancient times which is really fun. Only thing is that it is so busy that the server make us feel a bit rush. But their service quality overall is good.
