About Open Rice

Open Rice is a Chinese restaurant situated at 4422A 8th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11220, USA, specializing in the popular Cantonese tradition of dim sum. Unlike larger, more opulent establishments, Open Rice offers a smaller, yet still vibrant and hurried, dining atmosphere reminiscent of traditional dim sum parlors. The experience is described as loud and busy, particularly during peak times like Lunar New Year, with carts of food making their way around the dining room.

A key feature of Open Rice is its focus on fresh and well-made food. While the menu primarily consists of usual dim sum dishes and may not offer anything exceptionally unique, the flavors and textures are generally noted as sharp and well-executed. Customers have observed an improvement in service and food quality since a previous name change.

However, the environment at Open Rice has been described as old and somewhat dirty, and the decor may need updating. Additionally, some customers have reported issues with the waiter service, including potential miscalculations on the bill, advising patrons to request a recount and pay at the front. Seating arrangements mostly consist of larger tables accommodating 6 to 10 people, and smaller groups should anticipate the possibility of sharing a table.

It is also recommended to be cautious of unsolicited upsells from waiters carrying food around. Customers suggest sticking to the items offered on the carts and asking to see the food before making a selection. Despite some drawbacks in the environment and service, Open Rice provides a lively dim sum experience with fresh food for those seeking this style of Cantonese cuisine in Brooklyn.

CHINA 🇨🇳 Eat the World NYC review: When we think of dim sum parlors, we usually conjure up massive, opulent and shiny rooms with a stage that doubles as an event space for weddings and celebrations. The city also has a range of smaller parlors though, like here at Open Rice. The same feelings exist, minus the spaciousness; things are loud and hurried and carts make a beeline for your table the second (or before) you sit down. On the morning of Lunar New Year, the dining room was especially loud and busy and dim sum service went went into the afternoon. This usually sleepy location was in full-out enjoyment mode, and steamers of dumplings and chicken feet were rapidly landing on every table. The flavors and textures of each dish here are sharp and well executed. Chefs come and go so fast at these type of places that making recommendations can be fleeting, but for now the kitchen here is on point.

Remember coming here before they changed their name and it wasn't as nice. Pretty much the service and the quality went up like 10% and rest is same. They need to redo some decorations here. The place looks old and a bit on the dirty side. The waiter isn't as helpful beside overcharge my bill by making a miscalculation. I suggest you ask for a recount after the meal and pay in the front. Let me start getting a table and that probably the worst part at dimsum beside watching the cart moving slowly to you and get stuck at that one annoying table and you are hungry. This place only has mostly 6 to 10 ppl tables and you probably have to share a table if you are a small group. Food is fresh and well made. The usual dishes and nothing truly amazing. If you do come, do take anything the waiter carrying around to upsale at your table. Stay with the cart food and ask to see them first. Dont be shy.

My family has been coming here for many years. Their style has changed a bit but I still love the dim sums in the morning. Their variety of steam buns are my favorite, and also the steam rice noodle. At nighttime, there is a change in scenes. It’s Cantonese style dishes. I love their garlic chicken and walnut shrimp. Regardless, options are limitless. P.s. ask for their garlic hot oil. It taste good on everything!!!

Descent Cantonese restaurant with good food and nice prices. It’s usually around or less than 20$per person even you order sea food. Food is fresh and with delicious. But It’s been here for so many years and really need a renovation and some new chairs.

Dim Sum restaurant with a good variety of choices. Less crowded than the ones North of 50-60th Street due to location. Finding parking is much easier as well. Restaurant is cash only so come prepared!
