About Old Wok Barry Rd

Located at 200 NE Barry Rd, Kansas City, MO 64155, USA, Old Wok Barry Rd is a Chinese restaurant that serves the local community with a menu spanning not only Chinese classics but also Thai and Vietnamese dishes. For those looking to order or inquire, the restaurant can be reached at (816) 832-8622 or via mobile at +1 816-832-8622. As a Chinese Restaurant category on various platforms, it aims to provide a range of traditional and fusion Asian culinary experiences.

The environment at Old Wok Barry Rd has been described as bright and pleasant, offering a casual setting that typically features booth seating. This type of atmosphere is common for neighborhood Asian eateries, designed to be comfortable and accessible for a quick meal or a relaxed dining experience. While the overall ambiance is generally positive, some specific feedback has mentioned a slightly smoky smell in the area, which, for some patrons, might be a minor detractor from an otherwise agreeable setting. The decor is noted to include zodiac placemats, adding a touch of cultural authenticity to the dining experience.

Service at Old Wok Barry Rd presents a mixed picture based on customer feedback. There are instances of excellent service, where servers are described as very nice, fun, and attentive, taking excellent care of diners. This suggests that when the service is at its best, patrons can expect a welcoming and efficient experience. However, there has also been feedback indicating a less satisfactory service encounter, with one customer describing a rude phone interaction when calling ahead to inquire about a menu item, and a general impression of terrible service. This highlights a potential inconsistency in service quality, which might vary depending on the specific staff member or the time of visit. For online orders, some reviews commend the excellent service and promptness of food preparation and delivery, suggesting that the take-out and delivery services are generally well-managed.

The features of Old Wok Barry Rd are largely centered around its extensive menu, which aims to cater to diverse preferences within Asian cuisine. The core offering remains Chinese food, with various dishes that are staples in such establishments. Beyond Chinese, the inclusion of Thai and Vietnamese elements, such as pho and pad Thai, broadens its appeal. This multi-cuisine approach allows the restaurant to serve a wider audience looking for different Asian flavors.

When it comes to the food itself, the reviews offer contrasting perspectives. Some patrons have lauded the food as "amazing," "better than most small Chinese places in the area," with "the best flavor" and served "hot." Dishes like Thai teas have been specifically praised as "awesome." Other positive comments highlight the quality of protein used in dishes like General Tso's chicken and the freshness of vegetables, noting them as "nice, fresh and crisp." The portions are also noted to be generous, and for many, the price point is considered reasonable, especially for lunch specials.

Conversely, some experiences have been significantly less positive. One detailed review expressed disappointment with a chicken fried rice being "incredibly bland" and having an unusual "cinnamon" taste. This same review also cited issues with order accuracy, such as receiving a small egg drop soup instead of a large, and inconsistency in taste between two portions of the same soup. The ribs, while being the "only good thing," were described as "extremely dry." Furthermore, there's feedback suggesting a "noticeable and significant decrease in quality" over several years, with one customer stating that egg rolls were "cremated" and sesame chicken tasted like "McDonald's sweet and sour sauce." This stark contrast in reviews suggests that the culinary experience at Old Wok Barry Rd can be highly variable, leading to strong opinions on both ends of the spectrum.

Specific dishes mentioned on the menu or in reviews include: chicken fried rice, egg drop soup, ribs, Thai teas, General Tso's chicken, pad Thai, pho beef, pho combo, sweet & sour chicken, Kung Pao chicken, chicken with garlic sauce, honey chicken, sha-cha chicken, cashew chicken, chicken with snow peas, Mongolian chicken, chicken & broccoli, curry chicken, almond chicken, pineapple chicken, Szechuan chicken, Mandarin chicken, spring rolls, crab rangoon, mixed vegetables, vegetables & tofu, sauteed broccoli, Ma-Po tofu, vegetables with garlic sauce, Bangkok Stir Fry, Thai Pepper Stir Fry, Stir Fried Fresh Basil, Vegetable Lover, pho varieties (beef, meatballs, combo, vegetable, chicken, shrimp, seafood, tofu), Chinese dinners (shrimp, vegetarian, beef, pork), Chinese fried rice, Old Wok specials, Chinese pan-fried noodles, Mei Fun (rice noodle), Singapore Mei Fun (curry), Chinese Lo-Mein, and various beverages. This extensive list confirms a broad selection, catering to diverse tastes and dietary preferences.

Regarding promotional information, no specific current promotions or deals for Old Wok Barry Rd are explicitly mentioned in the provided information or general online search results. However, many Chinese restaurants, particularly those offering lunch specials or catering to take-out, often have ongoing deals that are communicated directly to customers or through their online ordering platforms. Given the mention of reasonable prices and generous portions, this in itself can be seen as a form of value proposition that attracts customers.

In conclusion, Old Wok Barry Rd serves as a Chinese restaurant in Kansas City, MO, offering a wide array of Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese dishes in a casual, bright setting. While some customers have experienced excellent food quality and friendly service, particularly with takeout and delivery, other reviews point to inconsistencies in dish flavor, order accuracy, and service demeanor. For those in the area, it presents an option for a diverse Asian meal, but prospective diners might consider the variability in customer experiences when making their choice.

I was really disappointed with my over all experience at this restaurant. I ordered chicken fried rice with extra chicken, one large egg drop soup and some ribs. The rice was incredibly bland but it also tasted slightly like cinnamon of all things (ewww). I ordered a large egg drop soup and they gave me a small so I had to go back to get the large but when I ate them they both tasted different from each other for some reason like they weren’t the same soup. I specifically ordered extra chicken in my chicken fried rice and I didn’t get extra chicken. Honestly the only good thing I had was the ribs and even then they were extremely dry. With all of this being said the service was absolutely terrible I called ahead to ask about an item on the menu and the person on the other line was very rude. Please do yourself a favor and save your money, DO NOT EAT HERE.

The food was amazing, better than most small Chinese places in the area. It had the best flavor and everything was hot. They had awesome Thai teas too! Our server was very nice and fun. He took excellent care of us. The atmosphere was bright and pleasant. The only downside was the area smelt a bit Smokey but other than that this place is great!

Best PHO and food in the entire area. From the service to the cooks and even the owner this restaurant is always 5 stars! They are always nice and even remember my order when I come in. They are just a great family owned business and I appreciate them a lot. They even offered to help me with my car when I had some trouble and that is just going above and beyond! Amazing people and food!

Prices were reasonable, too! The first picture is what I had gotten, I am really sorry but I don't remember the name, lol!! But I know it was the scallops cooked with peanuts, yum!!
