This restaurant is described as a Sugar Land classic, offering amazing and cheap food, making it a great value, particularly for the working class. Customers note the warm and welcoming nature of the staff, though there may be a slight language barrier, which some consider a sign of its authenticity. The naming of some dishes might not directly reflect how they are traditionally made.
Highly recommended food items include the must-try side dishes featuring seaweed, spicy pork, and century egg, as well as the classic bamboo. The milk tea is also mentioned as great. Customers suggest trying the noodles, beef dishes, and anything with tomato, which are reportedly amazing. The beef pancake is another standout recommendation.
The atmosphere is simple, and the restaurant offers self-serve water, tea, hot sauce, and utensils. The menu is available in both English and Chinese, and they now accept credit card payments. Some menu items have pictures for easier ordering. One customer specifically praised the deliciousness of the beef noodle soup, tender lamb soup, pan-fried pork dumplings, chicken lo mein, and spicy wonton, expressing their intention to return and try more dishes.
Keep in mind that the restaurant reportedly experiments with recipes, so individual dishes might vary based on personal taste. However, positive experiences suggest that even if one dish isn't to your liking, others could be exceptional. If you are in Sugar Land, TX, and looking for authentic and affordable Chinese food with a warm atmosphere, Old Place Cafe is a local favorite worth checking out.

People here are pressed because they are so used to American style service - this is a classic in sugar land. This is a great price for the food so set your expectations! It’s not going to be a 5 star experience but more for the working class :) Atmosphere The food is AMAZING. The price is CHEAP. The people are warm and welcoming and ofc a bit of a language barrier which is why you also know it’s authentic. Which is also why the naming of the food might not be how it’s made (like beef bimbambop is different from Korean) Recs for food: The side dishes is a must have for the seaweed and spicy pork and century egg!! Bamboo too is a classic and milk tea is great :) They try out a lot of recipes so it can be a hit or miss on your taste buds to see what you like personally. But just because you tried one dish and it didn’t fit your pallet doesn’t mean the others aren’t absolutely amazing ya know? I would recommend the noodles and the beef and ofc anything tomato since it’s amazing. And this beef pancake!! Never got food poisoning here so that person must have an intolerance not known lol
We were looking for a place to eat for lunch and saw Asians in this restaurant. So we decided to try it out. It didn’t disappoint. The staff hardly spoke English. The decor is simple. They have self-serve water, tea, hot sauce, and utensils. The menu is both in English and Chinese. You can now pay by credit card. One of their menu has pictures. We ordered beef noodle soup, lamb (so tender) soup, pan-fried pork dumplings, chicken lo mein, and spicy wonton. All of them were delicious. We will definitely go back and try their other items.
Growing up, our family has always dined here since its opening, drawn by the owner's warm hospitality. We particularly love their beef noodle soup and the whole lamb leg noodle soup. Recently, we've also become fans of their traditional North Side Chinese breakfast, adding a new layer of enjoyment to our family's dining tradition.
The owner is absolutely adorable and kind! The food is traditional and affordable.. They don't speak much English, but the menu has photos, so you can simply point at what you want. The beef noodles and dumplings are delicious. The pan-fried buns are huge but a little bland.
This is a cozy Chinese restaurant located in Sugarland. Prices are reasonable and portion is abundant. The noodles are freshly made and delicious. They offer small authentic appetizers. Decorations resembling ancient Chinese noodle shop. Worth a visit.
