About OK Cafe
OK Cafe is a Chinese restaurant located at 500 N Atlantic Blvd #169, Monterey Park, CA 91754, USA. Situated in Monterey Park, within the San Gabriel Valley (SGV) known for its high concentration of authentic Asian eateries, OK Cafe presents itself as a Hong Kong-style cafe, offering a diverse menu that aims to balance price and quality. You can contact them for inquiries or orders, although a phone number is not provided in the given information. As a Hong Kong cafe, OK Cafe likely features a mix of Chinese and Western-influenced dishes, a common characteristic of this popular dining style.
Operating within the Chinese Restaurant category, specifically as a Hong Kong cafe, OK Cafe offers a unique dining experience characterized by a specific cultural ambiance and a varied menu. The available online reviews provide a range of perspectives on the cafe, highlighting aspects such as its atmosphere, pricing, the quality of specific dishes, and the overall authenticity. These firsthand accounts are valuable for local users considering OK Cafe for a taste of Hong Kong cuisine in the SGV.
One reviewer who happened to be in the MP/Alhambra area and settled upon OK Cafe noted that it had been a while since they had visited a "good ole cafe" in this region. They recalled visiting an OK Cafe previously at a different location and were unsure if it was the same establishment with the same owner or a different one with the same name. However, they confirmed that the current OK Cafe definitely had a "HK vibe," evidenced by the predominantly Mandarin or Cantonese music, multiple TVs playing Asian content, and a menu that aligned with their past memories of such cafes. What impressed this reviewer the most was the combination of price and quality. They enjoyed a filet mignon with mushroom sauce for under $15, which they described as of "xlnt quality." The dish also included vegetables and a choice of rice or spaghetti, which they found "amazing." Ultimately, they highly recommended OK Cafe for its balance of price and quality, also noting that the restaurant was clean and the staff was nice. They did mention that parking could be a bit difficult and recommended visiting on weekdays.
In contrast, another reviewer offered a more lukewarm assessment, simply stating, "Ok food for Ok Cafe. Not extraordinarily good." This suggests that while the food might be acceptable, it did not particularly stand out as exceptional to this customer. They mentioned being prompted by a friend to try this HK cafe and decided to give it a shot.
A more detailed review provided a breakdown of specific dishes. The chow fen was described as having an "ok taste like most of the other HK cafes in SGV" but lacking "Wok Hei," which is considered essential for good chow fen. The Yang Zhou fried rice was also deemed "ok" but with a slightly salty taste, and the BBQ pork in the fried rice was reported to have no flavor. Regarding the wonton noodle, a staple of HK cafes, the reviewer found it to be "just ok" as well. They noted that the wontons did not contain much shrimp, and the noodles were saggy and difficult to separate, lacking the expected al dente and elastic texture of typical egg noodles served with wontons. The reviewer described the noodles as simply a "bundle of spaghetti egg noodles" without any chewiness.
Interestingly, this same reviewer found one dish to be good: the pan-fried Gai Lan. They described it as green, crunchy, and perfectly cooked, indicating a highlight in their otherwise mediocre experience. They expressed hope that other dishes on the menu might be better than the fried rice and chow fen they had tried.
Considering these varied reviews, OK Cafe in Monterey Park presents a mixed picture. On one hand, it seems to offer some dishes, like the filet mignon, at an impressive price-to-quality ratio, along with a clean environment and nice staff. The overall Hong Kong cafe ambiance, with Asian music and media, might appeal to those familiar with or seeking this cultural experience. However, other staple dishes like the chow fen, fried rice, and wonton noodle received less favorable reviews, with criticisms regarding the lack of Wok Hei, blandness, saltiness, and poor noodle texture. The pan-fried Gai Lan was a notable exception, praised for its quality.
As a Hong Kong cafe, OK Cafe likely offers a menu that blends traditional Cantonese dishes with Western influences, a hallmark of this cafe style. This could include items like baked rice dishes, pasta with various sauces, French toast, milk tea, and a variety of noodle and rice dishes. The mention of filet mignon suggests a broader menu than just typical Cantonese fare. The pricing seems to be a significant draw, particularly for dishes like the filet mignon. However, the inconsistency in the quality of other dishes, as highlighted in the reviews, is something for potential customers to consider.
For local users in Monterey Park and the wider SGV, OK Cafe offers a chance to experience a Hong Kong-style cafe with a focus on affordability. If you are looking for a casual spot with a specific cultural vibe and are interested in trying dishes like the reportedly excellent filet mignon at a very reasonable price, OK Cafe might be worth a visit. However, it is advisable to be aware of the mixed feedback on some of the more traditional Cantonese dishes like the chow fen and wonton noodle. The pan-fried Gai Lan appears to be another reliable option.
To get a better sense of their full menu and any other offerings, local residents might consider visiting OK Cafe in person, especially given the lack of a phone number in the provided information. Observing the environment and perhaps trying a few different dishes could provide a more comprehensive understanding of what this Hong Kong cafe has to offer. Given the parking situation mentioned in one review, planning a weekday visit might be a good strategy.
In conclusion, OK Cafe in Monterey Park offers a Hong Kong cafe experience with a focus on value, as evidenced by the well-received and affordable filet mignon. The ambiance reflects a typical HK cafe setting with Asian music and media. While some traditional dishes have received mixed reviews regarding their authenticity and quality, the pan-fried Gai Lan stands out as a positive. Local users seeking an affordable meal with a Hong Kong vibe in the SGV might find OK Cafe to be a worthwhile option, but it may be prudent to explore a range of their dishes to find the best offerings.

It’s been a while since I have been to a good ole cafe in the MP / Alhambra area. I happened to be in the area and settled upon OK cafe. I remember going to OK cafe a while back, but it was at a different location. I’m not even sure if it is the same restaurant and owner or a different restaurant with the same name. It definitely has the HK vibe as all the music was either in mandarin or Cantonese. They had multiple TVs playing all Asian content and the menu was just like I had remembered it. What I was most impressed with was the price and quality. I got filet mignon with mushroom sauce for less than $15 and it was xlnt quality. It came with vegetables and your choice of rice or spaghetti and it was amazing. Ultimately, I highly recommend for the balance of price and quality. Restaurant was clean, the staff was nice. Parking can be a bit difficult but I recommend weekdays.
Ok food for Ok Cafe. Not extraordinarily good. My friend has been telling to go try this HK cafe. I thought I would give it try. Here is the load downs: The chow fen has ok taste like most of the other HK cafes in SGV. But it lacked the Wok Hei which is essential to good Chow Fen. Yang Zhou fried rice is also ok with a bit of salty taste. The BBQ pork in the fried rice had no flavor. As for the wonton noodle, which is a stable of HK cafe, was also just ok. The wonton didn’t have a lot of shrimps and the noodle was saggy and it was hard for me to separate the noodle. The noodle had no texture, it was just a bundle of spaghetti egg noodles. Typically, the egg noodle comes with wonton should be al dente and elastic with a bit of chewy texture. The only good dish we had was the pan fried Gai Lan. It was green and crunchy that’s perfectly cooked. Haven’t tried the other dishes yet. I hope they are better than the fried rice and Chow Fen we had.
This restaurant offers typical Hong Kong style cafe options. Situated in the Atlantic Square, the restaurant shares parking with a number of other businesses and homes. On a Saturday night, tables were filled and service was fine, maybe a bit understaffed considering the large groups. Would come back. I think the portions and pricing is a good balance.
Came here a few times several years ago while vacationing. Quality is still consistent. Orders served promptly and correctly with good service although place was very busy. French style mignon cubes are tender and tasty, a bit sweet though. Egg with bitter melon is just right. Beef with egg over rice is authentic. However, the condensed milk with peanut butter sandwich is a joke. Stick with Chinese food.
Great Cantonese style food. Portions were excellent for the price you’re paying. You get a house soup and egg cakes too with your meal. Ordered the curry beef brisket rice and it was large enough for two or more people. Great date location, quiet.
