About Northern Kitchen
Welcome to Northern Kitchen, a Chinese Restaurant located at 7827 Portland Ave S in Bloomington, MN 55420, USA. Often described as a "low key hidden gem," Northern Kitchen offers local users an opportunity to experience authentic Chinese food in Bloomington. Its somewhat inconspicuous location and potentially exclusive clientele contribute to its unique charm. As a Chinese Restaurant, Northern Kitchen focuses on providing dishes that are true to traditional Chinese flavors, setting it apart from more Americanized Chinese food establishments.
Northern Kitchen primarily offers dine-in services, allowing customers to savor their authentic Chinese meals in a relaxed setting. The availability of a phone number, (952) 456-8681 or +1 952-456-8681, suggests that they may also accept phone inquiries and possibly takeout orders. One reviewer noted that upon arriving on a Saturday at lunchtime, the restaurant was empty, providing a spacious and bright dining environment. The service was described as friendly and helpful, with the server readily answering questions about the menu. This indicates a welcoming and attentive service approach for dine-in customers.
The environment of Northern Kitchen is described as spacious and bright, benefiting from plenty of natural light. This suggests a comfortable and airy dining area. The fact that one reviewer found the restaurant empty during a typical lunch hour might indicate that it is less crowded than other dining options, potentially offering a more peaceful dining experience. The presence of a connecting "Relaxing Healthy Center," likened to saunas in China, adds an intriguing dimension to the location, although it is a separate establishment. This unique connection might appeal to customers seeking a holistic experience.
Northern Kitchen's key feature is its commitment to serving authentic Chinese food. Several reviewers have explicitly praised the authenticity of the dishes. One reviewer, who ordered familiar Chinese restaurant staples, found every dish to be above average compared to similar dishes elsewhere. A standout recommendation is the fried pork in scoop (锅包肉), lauded for its delightful sweet and sour sauce. Other appreciated vegetable dishes include eggplant in garlic sauce (鱼香茄子), green beans with garlic (干煸四季豆), and Chinese cabbage (手撕包菜), with a notable vinegar tang in the cabbage. While one reviewer found the cumin lamb (孜然羊肉) to be mild in cumin flavor, they appreciated the generous amount of lamb. The spicy pepper chicken (辣子鸡) received high praise for its delicious taste and perfect level of spice. Additionally, the Kung Pao chicken was described as light and fresh. Another reviewer highlighted the General Tao’s chicken, dumplings, shrimp fried rice, and beef fried noodles (lo mein) as fantastic, noting that the flavors were light and delicious, unlike heavier Chinese food. This suggests a focus on fresh ingredients and well-prepared dishes.
A minor suggestion for improvement mentioned by one reviewer was that the flavors of some dishes tended to be on the mild side, although they clarified that this did not detract from the authenticity. This indicates that while the food is genuinely Chinese, it might be less intensely flavored than what some diners might be accustomed to. However, this could also appeal to those who prefer a more subtle and nuanced flavor profile in their Chinese cuisine.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Northern Kitchen in the provided reviews. As a potentially smaller, independently owned restaurant, they might not have large-scale promotions. Local users interested in any special offers or discounts are advised to contact the restaurant directly at (952) 456-8681. They might have daily specials or seasonal dishes that are not mentioned in the general reviews.
In conclusion, Northern Kitchen in Bloomington offers local users a chance to experience authentic Chinese cuisine in a spacious and bright environment with friendly service. This is one of those low key hidden gem restaurants that serve authentic food without a doubt, because it's not only difficult to locate, but also relatively exclusive in terms of its clientele. I enjoyed everything I have had here so far and definitely appreciated the authentic aspect of the food they have. The only improvement I could suggest was the taste of a lot of their dishes, as flavors tended to be on the mild side. It doesn't mean their food is any less authentic, though, and I would recommend all that are looking for authentic Chinese food to visit here. Individually, I ordered dishes that I would normally order in Chinese restaurants, so while I am not sure if there's anything I can necessarily recommend yet, I will say that I thought every dish I have had were above average in comparison to the same dishes I have had elsewhere. My favorite so far is the fried pork in scoop (锅包肉) and I don't even regularly eat pork. There was a nice layer of sweetness and sourness witht the sauce outside the pork pieces. The vegetable dishes like eggplant in garlic sauce (鱼香茄子), green beans with garlic (干煸四季豆), and Chinese cabbage (手撕包菜) are all tasty enough. The Chinese cabbage contained a lot of vinegar, and I bet some people would enjoy that. I didn't taste enough cumin in the cumin lamb (孜然羊肉) dish, but there was an abundant amount of lamb and I appreciated it. The spicy pepper chicken (辣子鸡) was very delicious and had the right amount of spice in my opinion. There is a Relaxing Healthy Center that's connected to the restaurant and apparently that establishment has been very popular, especially in the evenings. I have not visited there yet but I heard that it was similar to saunas in China, and I would love to visit there soon. Regardless, this is a hidden gem, hole in the wall, type of spot and I would definitely recommend everyone.
On a Saturday at 11:30 am, we arrived at the restaurant and found that we had the entire place to ourselves. The interior was spacious and bright, with plenty of natural light. Our server was friendly and helpful, answering all my questions about the menu. We ordered dumplings, general tao’s chicken, shrimp fried rice, and beef fried noodles (lo mein). Every dish was fantastic! Unlike most Chinese food that can make you feel heavy and bloated, the flavors were light and delicious. We were impressed with the quality of the food; the shrimp fried rice had large, fresh shrimp, and lo mein noodles were cooked perfectly. I know this place is a hit or miss from previous reviews but give it a chance yourself. We highly recommend this restaurant to friends and family and will definitely be returning. We hope that it will be around for many years to come! I had to mention their spicy pepper chicken and Kung Pao chicken that we tried the other day! I'm so happy I asked the server what her favorite dish was- spicy pepper chicken isn’t as spicy as it looks and packs so much flavor and crispiness! The Kung Pao was very light and fresh!
UPDATED: the food here is still good and the price is getting back to normal! Update-1: the restaurant has raised their prices by around $2 per dish. I have to downgrade the rating not just because of the pricing, but also because the quality of their dishes has been going south. Like the grilled fish, the size of fish was getting smaller and smaller whenever we ordered that! The business owner needs to improve it before getting no return customers! We went with friends and the foods are pretty delicious. The spicy food can be really 🌶️ New dish:东北大拉皮
This place is hands down THE BEST Chinese food in MN. As someone who grew up in Northeast China, I can testify that the food is super authentic. My husband and I go there every week. The food is just so good. Everyone we brought over LOVE the food. And it’s not just the food. The service is amazing. Love the owners and staff. They are always so friendly. There’s something special about this place and the dishes that make me feel connected to the food and the people. Also I want to say that the spicy pepper chicken (辣子鸡)is so good. It’s hard to find any other restaurants in MN that cook this dish the correct way. It’s spicy and crunchy and flavorful. It’s so good that I order it every time I go. It’s a problem cuz I want to explore the rest of the menu. Haven’t had anything from the menu that I don’t like yet. 10/10 recommend!
This place is awesome. Very authentic northern Chinese food and the staff/owners are super friendly.
