Based on recent customer feedback available online, experiences at No 1 Restaurant appear to be varied. One recent review highlights a potentially positive dining experience, describing the restaurant as an "absolute must-visit" for an "unforgettable dining experience." This customer praised the "warm, welcoming atmosphere" upon entering the establishment, suggesting a pleasant environment for those choosing to dine in. The review also lauded the food as "nothing short of spectacular," emphasizing the flavorful dishes made with fresh ingredients and appealing presentation. Specific dishes mentioned include classic sweet and sour chicken and a "perfectly seasoned Szechuan-style beef," indicating a range of options catering to different tastes.
Furthermore, the positive review commended the service as "top-notch," describing the staff as "attentive, friendly, and eager to ensure you have the best experience possible." The reviewer noted that the staff goes "above and beyond" to make customers feel at home, offering recommendations and personalizing meals. This positive feedback extends to both dine-in and takeout service, with the reviewer noting "fast, efficient, and seamless service" regardless of how the food is enjoyed.
In contrast to this positive account, another recent review presents a significantly different perspective. This customer indicates a long history of patronage, having eaten at the restaurant for over 20 years. However, their recent experience suggests a potential change in ownership or cooking style. The reviewer states that the food tasted "strange" and specifically criticized the fried rice, describing it as "not fried rice" and "not fully cooked," noting a grainy texture. This negative experience was not isolated, as the reviewer mentioned noticing a similar issue on a previous visit, which had deterred them from returning until this recent attempt. Unfortunately, their second chance did not yield a return to previous standards, leading them to conclude that they "won't be going back."
Considering these contrasting reviews, it is important for potential customers to be aware of the spectrum of experiences reported. The positive review suggests a restaurant that, at least in one instance, provided excellent food, service, and atmosphere. The mention of specific dishes like sweet and sour chicken and Szechuan beef gives an idea of the menu offerings, leaning towards familiar and potentially more adventurous Chinese cuisine. The emphasis on fresh ingredients and flavorful preparation indicates a focus on food quality.
On the other hand, the negative review raises concerns about consistency and potential changes in food preparation. The criticism of the fried rice, a staple in many Chinese restaurants, being undercooked and not resembling traditional fried rice is a significant point of concern. The reviewer's long-term patronage adds weight to their observation of a decline in quality, suggesting that past positive experiences may not reflect the current state of the restaurant.
Given the available information, which includes both a highly positive recent review and a strongly negative recent review from a long-time customer, it is challenging to form a definitive objective assessment of the current state of No 1 Restaurant. Potential customers may wish to consider these differing opinions when making their decision. The positive review highlights the potential for a very enjoyable dining experience with flavorful food and excellent service, while the negative review serves as a cautionary note regarding potential inconsistencies in food quality and preparation.

We have been eating here for 20 plus yrs. This place must've changed ownership. It's a different style of cooking or something. Food tastes strange. The fried rice is not fried rice and it wasn't fully cooked.....still grainy. I noticed it before and haven't been back until tonight. We gave it another chance tonight thinking maybe the food would taste like it use to. It didn't. We won't be going back.
The place was hopping. But the composer was great. Friendly staff. The food I ordered was delicious. Had to eat some of the Crab Rangoon on the way home. Highly recommend asking for the Shrimp and broccoli with the garlic sauce. I know it’s not on the menu but they will accommodate for you.
We get food from here often , however tonight we got food and there was a maggot in it. I called to try to remedy the situation with a refund/ even partially which they were unwilling. So here you have it. Their food has maggots and the customer service was horrible.
Very disappointed. I just moved to Gloucester and was trying to find a good Chinese restaurant and chose this place. I asked, what did they put in their fried rice and I was told carrots, broccoli and vegetables. Great that’s exactly how I like my fried rice. However, none of that was in my rice. The crab Rangoon is small and does not taste good. Egg roll was tiny and nasty. I spent $25 for one entrée and one appetizer. That’s a shame.
