About New Red Jade

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco's vibrant Church Street neighborhood, at 245 Church St, you'll find New Red Jade, a Chinese restaurant that offers a blend of familiar and comforting flavors. As part of the Chinese Restaurant category, New Red Jade aims to provide a dining experience that resonates with both locals and visitors seeking a taste of Chinese cuisine. While online reviews present a somewhat mixed perspective, certain aspects of the restaurant, such as its welcoming atmosphere and generous portions, stand out.

The environment at New Red Jade appears to be characterized by a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. One reviewer specifically mentioned the "very nice boss and family" who run the establishment, describing them as "very welcoming." The restaurant is also noted to be "clean," suggesting a comfortable and well-maintained dining space where guests can feel at ease. The presence of "many families and friends dining there" indicates that New Red Jade is a place where community gathers, fostering a sense of local charm and a family-friendly environment.

The service at New Red Jade receives both positive and negative feedback in the available reviews. One customer who expressed significant dissatisfaction with their meal noted that when they commented to the server, no accommodation or acknowledgment of their feedback was made. This suggests a potential inconsistency in how customer concerns are handled. However, another reviewer highlighted the welcoming nature of the boss and family, implying a personal touch in the service that some patrons may appreciate. It's important for potential diners to be aware that service experiences might vary.

In terms of its culinary offerings, New Red Jade presents a menu that includes familiar Chinese dishes. One reviewer, who grew up with a diverse range of Southeast Asian Chinese cuisines, found the Lemon Chicken to be a highlight. They noted its preparation with breast meat, resulting in a crunchy and non-dried-out texture, which they found "very yummy" and reminiscent of a home-style dish. The String Beans were also mentioned positively by the same reviewer, who described the overall taste as "wholesome, like home." This suggests that New Red Jade excels in certain classic dishes, offering a comforting and satisfying experience.

The generous portions served at New Red Jade are a notable feature, with one reviewer explicitly mentioning this aspect when ordering the Lemon Chicken and String Beans with white rice for two. This can be a significant draw for diners looking for good value and a substantial meal. The focus on providing ample servings suggests a desire to ensure customers leave feeling satisfied.

However, not all culinary experiences reported were positive. One reviewer expressed strong disappointment with their selections, specifically the Orange Chicken, which they found to have "zero orange flavor" and of such poor quality that they would hesitate to feed it to their dog. They also criticized the Green Onion (Scallion) Pancakes for being overly thick, undercooked in the middle, and only cooked at the edges. This negative feedback indicates that the quality and preparation of certain dishes may be inconsistent or not to everyone's liking.

Furthermore, the same dissatisfied customer reported that their fortune cookie was stale, adding to their negative overall impression. This detail, while seemingly minor, can contribute to a diner's overall perception of the restaurant's attention to detail and quality control.

Despite the mixed reviews, the positive experiences shared by other customers, particularly regarding the Lemon Chicken, String Beans, and the welcoming atmosphere, suggest that New Red Jade has its strengths. The restaurant appears to be a family-run establishment that takes pride in its hospitality and the home-style quality of some of its dishes. The hope expressed by one reviewer that more people will try New Red Jade indicates a belief in the potential of this local eatery to satisfy its customers.

For local users in the Church Street area of San Francisco, New Red Jade offers the convenience of a neighborhood Chinese restaurant with the potential for a comforting and generously portioned meal. While it's advisable to be aware of the mixed feedback regarding certain dishes, the positive comments about the Lemon Chicken, String Beans, and the welcoming service from the owners suggest that it might be worth a visit, especially if you are looking for a casual, family-friendly spot.

In conclusion, New Red Jade on Church Street in San Francisco presents a mixed bag of reviews, with strong positives regarding its welcoming family ownership, generous portions, and specific dishes like the Lemon Chicken and String Beans. However, there are also concerns raised about the quality and preparation of other items, such as the Orange Chicken and Scallion Pancakes, as well as inconsistencies in service response to complaints. Local users might find it a worthwhile neighborhood option, particularly if seeking a home-style Chinese meal with generous servings and a friendly atmosphere, but should be aware of the varied experiences reported by other diners.

Highly disappointed with my selections. The orange chicken I would think twice about feeding my dog (see photo) and had zero orange flavor. And the green onion (scallion) pancakes were about twice as thick as I'm accustomed to, and it was undercooked except at the edges. When I commented to the server about my dissatisfaction (he seemed surprised I didn't want to take away so many leftovers), no accommodation was made to compensate or acknowledge my feedback. And to top it all off, the fortune cookie was stale. Luckily, a friend recommended another nearby Chinese place the following night that I thoroughly enjoyed, allowing me to expunge the taste and experience of New Red Jade.

We grew up with a lot of chinese cuisines in southeast asia- teochew, hakka, hainam, foochow, hokkien, cantonese. And while vacationing in San Francisco, after sunday mass at the Mission Basilica, we stumbled upon the New Red Jade and decided to have some chinese for sunday lunch. Very nice boss and family. Very welcoming. Restaurant is clean. We ordered the Lemon Chicken and String Beans, white rice for 2. Generous portions!!! Delicious, delicious, delicious. Tastes wholesome, like home 😍 lemon chicken is a dish we have back home, but back home it is cooked with various chicken parts like thighs etc, and we even have orange chicken versions.. BUT nevertheless the lemon chicken here is prepared with breast meat, and is crunchy and not dried out... which makes is very yummy. We saw many families and friends dining there, and we hope many more people will go to the New Red Jade and give them a try. If you dont know what to order, try what we've ordered.. ☺️ Will definitely come back when we visit SF again! Thank you laupan (boss) and family and team for preparing these dishes and for feeding us these delicious food. Keep it up! Jia yu! 🫶

Classic Chinese American fare. This place’s lunch specials are a really good deal, and they don’t do any weird surcharges so the bill honestly was shocking…ly small. Portions are huge. Pretty empty at noon on a Sunday, seems like a lot of people order takeout from here. Sesame ball dessert that came with the special was super tasty too. * Asparagus and black bean salmon (the salmon is thin crispy slices, not like a western style filet) * chow mein * green beans with pork
