New Peking Chinese Restaurant is a dining establishment located at 555 King St in Charleston, South Carolina, operating within the "Chinese Restaurant" platform category. Situated on King Street in downtown Charleston, New Peking can be contacted at (843) 501-7100 or via their mobile number +1 843-501-7100 for inquiries or to place orders.
Based on the available customer reviews, experiences at New Peking Chinese Restaurant appear to be mixed, with some acknowledging its affordability while others express significant concerns about the environment and the quality of the food. One reviewer, who visited in November 2024, noted that their first impression was of an older restaurant in need of updating or at least some refurbishment. They described a setup where ordering is done behind a plastic window separating the kitchen and counter from the dining area, which contains a "good amount of booths" but is very dark and in need of work.
This reviewer ordered the "General special," which included fried rice, soup, and an egg roll, priced at approximately $13. They considered this a fair price. They also purchased two cans of soda for an additional $3, bringing their total to around $16. While they didn't need the second soda, they found the overall cost to be quite reasonable. Regarding the food itself, they described it as "okay," noting that it wasn't bad but also not the best they had ever had. They felt it "did the job," was filling, and palatable. Although they were just visiting the area and would not become a regular, they stated they would consider New Peking again if they were back in Charleston, seeing it as a far cry from the worst Chinese food they'd had, even if not the best, and appreciated its cost-effectiveness.
However, another reviewer had a much more negative experience, stating that their food was "awful" and expressing disappointment, especially considering a past positive perception of New Peking as having the best Chinese food in downtown Charleston. This customer ordered Beef and Broccoli and General Tso Chicken, both of which they found to be lacking in sauce, with tough and overcooked meat. The only item they found digestible was the soup. They also noted the unavailability of Egg Foo Yung, speculating it might be due to egg prices. This reviewer strongly criticized the restaurant's need for a deep cleaning, improved lighting, and better food preparation, lamenting a significant decline in quality and describing the food as "awful plus 😞."
The environment of New Peking Chinese Restaurant is described by one reviewer as an "older restaurant that really needs an update" with a dark dining room containing a "good amount of booths." The ordering process behind a plastic window suggests a more casual or budget-friendly setup, potentially prioritizing efficiency over ambiance. The second reviewer echoed the concern about the environment, explicitly stating that the place "needs a deep cleaning" and "improved lighting," further reinforcing the impression of a dated and potentially unappealing dining space.
The services offered by New Peking Chinese Restaurant appear to include dine-in, as suggested by the presence of a dining room with booths. Takeout is also clearly available, as both reviewers ordered food to consume. There is no explicit mention of delivery services in the provided feedback. Customers interested in delivery options would need to contact the restaurant directly to inquire about their availability.
In terms of features, New Peking Chinese Restaurant offers a cost-effective menu, as highlighted by the first reviewer who found the price of the "General special" (including fried rice, soup, and an egg roll) to be fair, and the overall meal to be reasonably priced. However, the second reviewer's experience points to significant issues with food quality, particularly the lack of sauce and the tough, overcooked meat in dishes like Beef and Broccoli and General Tso Chicken. The unavailability of Egg Foo Yung, possibly due to ingredient costs, could also be considered a feature (or lack thereof) of their current menu. The stark contrast in food quality reported by the two reviewers suggests inconsistency may be a significant characteristic of the restaurant.
There is no promotional information available in the provided customer reviews. Neither reviewer mentioned any special offers, discounts, or loyalty programs being offered by New Peking Chinese Restaurant. Customers interested in any such deals would need to check with the restaurant directly or look for information on their website or other online platforms, if available.
In conclusion, New Peking Chinese Restaurant in downtown Charleston, SC, presents a mixed picture based on recent customer feedback. While one reviewer found it to be a cost-effective option with adequate food, another described the food as awful and lamented a decline in quality, also noting the dated and unclean environment. Potential customers should be aware of these contrasting experiences. If budget is a primary concern and expectations for ambiance and food quality are moderate, New Peking might be a consideration. However, those seeking a more refined dining experience with consistently high-quality and well-prepared dishes may want to explore other options in the Charleston area.

Customer Reviews
I ordered from the New Peking in November 2024. My first impression was the all too common older restaurant that really needs an update, or at least some work. You order from behind a plastic window that separates the kitchen and counter area from what is considered a dining room. There are a good amount of booths, it’s very dark, and as earlier stated, needs work. I ordered the General special. That came with fried rice, soup and an egg roll. I think it was about $13. I feel that was a pretty fair price considering. I also grabbed two cans of soda for another $3. Although I didn’t need the second can, my total for dinner was only about $16 total. The food itself was okay. It wasn’t bad, but I definitely have had much better. But it did the job. I couldn’t eat it all. It wasn’t bad to eat. And it was pretty cost effective. I was only visiting the area and will not become a regular customer. But if back in the area, I would consider New Peking again. It’s not the best I’ve had. But is far from the worst. Like I said, it did the job.
Omg, my food was awful. This was always the best Chinese food in downtown Charleston. However, what a disappointment.I had Beef and broccoli and General Tso Chicken...there were no sauces just the meat, which was tough and over cooked. The only thing we were able to digest was the soup. Due to the egg prices, I guess they couldn't prepare Egg Foo Yung. This place needs a deep cleaning, improved lighting and better food prep. Again, what a fall from grace, the food was awful plus 😞
Ate here a few times with mixed feelings. Crab rangoons are delicious, the kung pao chicken was good, sweet n sour is terrible. DONT get their breaded chicken. I had one bite with RED MEAT 😞 idk what was in it or if it was bad meat but I had a very painful knot in my stomach followed by 2 days of severe hiccups after the sesame chicken. The non breaded chicken sits well though. Pricing is fair for the quality and plenty of quantity. Interior used to have boxes everywhere but it's getting cleaned up.
Consistent and delicious. I do think its too expensive - but that's mostly because I would want to order half-size dishes so I can have diversity in my meal without feeding a family of 4+.
Ordered through doordash and our large pork fried rice was missing from our order, beef and broccoli container was half full and paid $12.95 for that. Other containers of items ordered were also not as full as all other Chinese takeout we've ever ordered. My bag was still sealed when it arrived so it wasn't a driver issue with things missing, it was the restaurant itself. You definitely get a better value at other Chinese restaurants because you get way more for your money. I've included a photo of exactly how empty the $12.95 beef and broccoli was. Ridiculous! I will not be ordering from New Peking restaurant ever again.
