About New Moon
Nestled on Stockton Street in San Francisco, at address 1247, New Moon presents itself as a convenient and authentic Chinese Restaurant, particularly noted for its takeout dim sum and snack options. Situated in a vibrant area, likely near or within Chinatown or North Beach, New Moon offers a valuable alternative for those seeking traditional Chinese fare without the often lengthy waits associated with some of the more heavily hyped establishments in the vicinity. Based on customer reviews, New Moon provides a decent selection of food beyond just dim sum, including staples like fried rice, chow mein (available by the pound), and fried chicken, all delivered with fast service.
The environment of New Moon, based on the limited information, appears to be that of a "nice little spot" primarily geared towards takeout. The mention of it being an alternative when another nearby place has a "super long" line suggests that New Moon might be smaller or less crowded, focusing on efficiency for customers looking to grab food on the go. While dine-in is not explicitly mentioned, the emphasis on takeout dim sum and snacks implies a setup that facilitates quick and easy ordering and pickup. The lack of detailed description about the ambiance suggests that the focus is more on the food and service speed rather than elaborate decor or a leisurely dining experience.
In terms of services, New Moon clearly excels in providing fast service. One reviewer specifically commended the "fast service" and gave a "good job" to the staff. This efficiency is particularly valuable for customers who are on a tight schedule or looking to quickly satisfy their cravings for dim sum or other Chinese snacks and dishes. The primary service seems to be geared towards takeout, allowing customers to enjoy authentic flavors in the comfort of their own homes or elsewhere. However, the fact that it's described as a "spot" implies that there might be a small area for quick pickup or perhaps even a limited number of seats for those who wish to eat their food shortly after purchasing it. The availability of chow mein "by the pound" is also a notable service feature, catering to those looking to buy in larger quantities, perhaps for gatherings or larger families.
The features of New Moon are centered around its diverse offerings, which extend beyond the typical dim sum fare. While it is recognized as a "nice little spot for authentic takeout dim sum and snacks," it also boasts a menu that includes fried rice, chow mein (sold by weight), and fried chicken. This variety suggests that New Moon caters to a broader range of tastes and preferences, making it a convenient one-stop shop for different Chinese food cravings. Among the specific food items mentioned, the "Malay cake" and "crispy sesame ball" received positive feedback, with one reviewer stating they "really enjoyed" them and intended to try more on a future visit. This highlights the quality and appeal of their snack and dim sum selections. Additionally, the "Chinese donut," "fried chicken," and "porridge" were described as tasting "fine," indicating a satisfactory level of quality for these more common Chinese dishes. The availability of both traditional dim sum and more substantial items like fried rice and chow mein makes New Moon a versatile option for different meal times and appetites.
The promotional information for New Moon is subtly woven into the customer reviews. Its positioning as a great alternative to a nearby, often crowded dim sum restaurant on Stockton Street is a significant promotional point, appealing to those who value their time and prefer to avoid long waits. The emphasis on "authentic takeout dim sum and snacks" suggests a commitment to providing genuine flavors that satisfy those seeking a traditional taste. The positive remarks about specific items like the Malay cake and crispy sesame ball can entice customers to try these potentially unique or well-prepared offerings. Furthermore, the mention of "decent" food across their broader menu, including fried rice, chow mein, fried chicken, Chinese donut, and porridge, assures potential customers of a baseline level of quality. The consistently highlighted "fast service" is a major promotional advantage, especially for a takeout-focused establishment in a busy area. The overall impression is that New Moon offers a reliable and efficient way to enjoy a variety of Chinese foods, particularly dim sum and snacks, without the hassles of long lines.
For local users in the Stockton Street area of San Francisco, particularly those craving dim sum or Chinese snacks, New Moon presents a compelling option. Its strategic location as a less crowded alternative to other popular spots makes it a convenient choice for those looking for a quicker way to satisfy their cravings. The positive feedback on the authenticity of their dim sum and snacks, along with specific mentions of enjoyable items like the Malay cake and crispy sesame ball, suggests a worthwhile culinary experience. The added variety of fried rice, chow mein (by the pound), and fried chicken makes it a versatile option for different meal needs. The consistently praised fast service ensures that customers can get their food quickly and efficiently, whether they are grabbing a snack or a more substantial meal. If you find yourself facing long lines at other Chinese restaurants on Stockton Street, New Moon offers a promising alternative with decent food and swift service.
The fact that a reviewer who initially went there as a secondary option due to long lines elsewhere found it to be "great" and expressed intent to return speaks volumes about the positive experience New Moon offers. It suggests that while it might be a "little spot," it doesn't compromise on quality or satisfaction. The availability of both lighter fare like dim sum and snacks, as well as more filling options like fried rice and chow mein, caters to a wide range of appetites and preferences. The positive mention of the staff's good job further reinforces the idea of a well-run establishment that values efficiency and customer satisfaction. For those who appreciate the convenience of takeout without sacrificing authenticity or taste, New Moon appears to be a reliable choice in a bustling culinary area.

Nice little spot for authentic takeout dim sum and snacks. If the other place is super long then just a few stores down this place is great! Really enjoyed the Malay cake and crispy sesame ball. Next time I'll leave to try more.
New Moon has more than just dim sum. They also have fried rice, chow mein by the pound and fried chicken. I like this restaurant because the food is decent and there isn't a long line like some other over-hyped dim sum restaurant on Stockton St. The Chinese donut, fried chicken and porridge tasted fine. Service was fast. Good job staff at New Moon.
New Moon was known for their thriving no frills a la carte window meat display has been renovated to a dim-sum place setup to-go only. The staff here speak some english, but limited to basic retail interactions only. Front counter steam table is reduced to half of its original size. Rice is cook with a table top rice cooker visible to the public. As far as dim-sum goes, its the normal stuff you would see at a tea house type. What to get here? You get har gow and preserved egg porridge available in two sizes sm $1.75/lg $2.75. I'm a fan of their har gow. Dough wrapping is just right. The fillings are NOT paste here. Instead, they're half dollar coin size peel and deveined whole shrimps. I look for any sign of paste and none was found. And, of course it's cash only.
Some of the best tasting to-go dim sum you can find in Chinatown. A very good selection of dim sum items and hot food as well. Staff are friendly and efficient.
I was searching for the fried taro dim sum dumplings at multiple dim sum shops on Stockton. This shop had a pre-made serving of 3 pieces on display. Yes, it was cold (probably made that morning?). However, it was exactly what I was looking for! I'll have to visit another time to try a few other items.
