About New Happy Family
New Happy Family is a Chinese restaurant located at 810 Oley St suite d, Reading, PA 19604, USA. As a Chinese restaurant, it provides a variety of Chinese dishes for the local community, with options for takeout.
Customer reviews for New Happy Family present a mixed picture. One long-time customer, who had previously given a positive review and frequented the restaurant for over 27 years, reported two recent negative experiences. In their latest order, they described the General Tso's lunch special as having virtually no chicken inside the breading, tasting like crunchy, burnt crackers. They also noted a change in the wonton soup, which no longer includes scallions and herbs. However, they still praised the House Special Lo Mein as incredible but stated it wasn't enough to compensate for the overall disappointing experience.
On the other hand, another reviewer described New Happy Family as their favorite Chinese spot in the city, highly recommending the crab rangoons and tostones with garlic sauce as must-try items. They praised the restaurant for consistently satisfying them and their family, for good communication regarding orders, and for timely service, even when placing an order shortly before closing.
Given these contrasting recent experiences, it appears that while New Happy Family has some highly regarded dishes like the House Special Lo Mein, crab rangoons, and tostones with garlic sauce, consistency in food quality for other items like the General Tso's chicken and wonton soup may be a concern. The service is generally viewed positively, especially regarding delivery and communication.

3 years ago I left a big positive review, I have forever loved this place and always recommended when a recommendation was asked on a popular local FB page..2x in a row I have had bad experiences now. I normally ordered 1-2x a mth for over 27+ yrs..but besides today..it's been several mths, now I believe I'm done with this place. Ordered General Toa's lunch special today..there was absolutely no chicken in the breading..zero..I'm not even being dramatic..and each piece tasted like a crunchy breaded cracker..wtf? Top it off each piece tasted burnt..I have never experienced this ever here. Been huge fan of the Wonton soup forever..now they don't add scallions and herbs..it definitely made it pop when they did..BUT the House Special Lo Mein is still incredible!! Just not enough to keep me coming back 😏 $29.50 for large house lo mein, horrible General Toa's lunch special and wonton soup..it's alot when it's not good..but i would've paid more if it hit my expectations like it has for decades. Burnt bits in photos was just enough to make each piece taste burnt..oh well it was a good run. ✌🏽
Favorite Chinese spot in the city. The crab rangoons and tostones with garlic sauce are a MUST. They never fail to satisfy me and my family. They are great with keeping in touch about orders and are always on time!!! Called 20 minutes before closing and got my food 45 minutes later!
the day before my delivery came cold. I was given a 50% off discount on my next order. now today when I go to make that order the price after the discount isn't enough for them to deliver so they told me I had to add something else. now it doesn't seem fair to give me a discount and then make me pay more to please this $15 delivery few rule saying that the driver wont deliver if isn't $15 or more. the bill came to 12 something. I was told I can pick it up but that still isn't fair. the messed up my delivery so the need to fixed my next delivery. and the driver was going to get a $5 tip. even though they say that has nothing to do with them. but it makes it worth it for the driver to deliver. and how can the driver decide what orders they are going to take or night take. the delivery driver's job is to deliver. well neither the driver or the restaurant deliver on what was promised to me.
I used to like this place alot and in the past I had written a pretty good review for them but I just took it down!! The other day I had ordered from here and I was extremely disappointed!! I did order a good amount of food my bill came up to almost $40.00 plus a tip for the delivery driver... Usually this place can take to an hour to an hour and a half to get your food but this time it actually came pretty fast within 35 minutes... When I got my order I could already see through the plastic outer bag that the inner brown paper bag was totally soaked with the gravy from my order.... When I open the bag my order was totally upside down and my container was open (which that is why all the gravy leaked out)... Not only that, one of my orders was the "pan fried wonton".... When I open that up, I seen all of the wontons were actually burnt with some almost black on one side not only that the container of soy sauce they put in with it was completely empty because they did not put the lid on right!! I did call and told them of the situation but I wasn't expecting anything in return for it... Unfortunately now I know I have to go to another Chinese restaurant in the area because I was really unsatisfied and disappointed in them for all the money that I had just spent and wasted there and for all the money I had also spent there in the past!! So will I go here ever again? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!
The big white guy that does deliveries tips himself on your card without consent. Failing to realize your bank shows you. Luckily h had a feeling and saved my receipt. Bank is owning an investigation. Also he failed to realize that the transaction was recorded. And the receipt was signed and he kept asking for a tip. People will tip you when you don’t harass them for a tip. A lot of us realize people like this depend on tips. But that’s not how you handle it. That’s a crime. And it was all on video.
