About New China Wok

Welcome to New China Wok, a Chinese restaurant located at 1001 Harbor View Rd in Charleston, South Carolina. Operating within the Chinese Restaurant category, New China Wok primarily functions as a takeout establishment, catering to those seeking Chinese cuisine to enjoy off-premises. You can contact New China Wok at (843) 406-0667 or via their mobile number, +1 843-406-0667 for placing orders and inquiries about their menu and operating hours.

Based on the available customer reviews, experiences at New China Wok appear to be quite polarized, with some customers expressing significant dissatisfaction while others have had highly positive experiences. One reviewer had a decidedly negative encounter, stating that New China Wok was "Not the place to go if craving Chinese." This customer described several dishes as being severely subpar, including ribs and chicken that were "so charred and dry we couldn’t even eat it," and shrimp toast that was labeled as "simply disgusting." While they found the crab Rangoon, rice, and sweet and sour shrimp to be "edible," they noted that these dishes "didn’t really hit the spot," leading to their disappointment in finding a "yummy local Chinese spot." This feedback raises serious concerns about the quality and preparation of certain items on the menu.

Adding to the negative experience of the first reviewer were observations regarding the service environment. They mentioned "children running the counter" and witnessing apparent impatience and upset directed towards them when they were "count the money too slow." The reviewer expressed feeling bad for the child and speculated about the circumstances, such as a lack of babysitter leading to a difficult night for the staff. Regardless of the reasons, this observation suggests potential issues with the professionalism or management of the service counter during this particular visit. The overall negative experience led this reviewer to conclude that they "sadly, will not return."

In stark contrast, another customer had an overwhelmingly positive experience with New China Wok. This reviewer, who was visiting Charleston and had a family tradition of eating Chinese takeout on their first night, specifically sought out New China Wok based on its "highly rated" status on Google Maps. Their primary focus was to find excellent Singapore Mei Fun, a dish they continuously search for at various Chinese restaurants. According to this reviewer, New China Wok delivered "by far, the best Singapore-style noodles that I have tasted!!!" They described the dish as "absolutely delicious" and praised the "balance of flavor," including the "heat from the curry," the "freshness of the ingredients," and the "overall portion size," which they found to be large but manageable. Furthermore, this satisfied customer was also "very satisfied and pleased" with their other orders, which included "triple delight and fried dumplings." Based on this highly positive experience, the reviewer offered a strong recommendation for New China Wok and expressed their intention to return during future visits to Charleston.

Given these conflicting reviews, it is challenging to definitively describe the typical environment and overall quality of New China Wok. The first review suggests a potential lack of attention to food quality and possible issues with service professionalism. The second review, however, paints a picture of a restaurant capable of producing exceptional dishes, particularly their Singapore Mei Fun, and satisfying other standard Chinese takeout fare. The mention of children at the counter in the negative review might imply a small, family-run operation, but this is speculative and does not provide a clear picture of the typical customer service environment.

As the address indicates a location on Harbor View Road, it is likely situated in a commercial area of Charleston. However, without further information from the reviews, it is impossible to describe the restaurant's physical ambiance or the typical conditions for customers picking up their orders. The focus of both reviews is primarily on the food quality and service interactions during takeout.

The primary service offered by New China Wok is clearly takeout, as indicated by the second reviewer's search for a "Chinese take out place" and their experience of bringing the food back to their hotel. While the first reviewer's negative experience involved picking up food, there is no explicit mention of dine-in or delivery services. Given the nature of the positive review, which focuses on the quality of takeout dishes, it is reasonable to assume that takeout is a central part of their operation. To confirm whether New China Wok offers dine-in or delivery options, it would be necessary to contact the restaurant directly.

Features of New China Wok, based on the contrasting reviews, include the potential for both very poorly executed dishes (charred and dry meats, disgusting shrimp toast) and exceptionally well-prepared items (Singapore Mei Fun praised as the best). The "triple delight" and "fried dumplings" were also mentioned positively by one reviewer. This suggests that the quality and execution of dishes may vary. The negative review also unfortunately highlights potential issues with service professionalism at the counter. On a positive note, the second reviewer emphasized the flavorful and well-balanced Singapore Mei Fun with fresh ingredients and generous portion sizes, indicating a potential specialty or strength of the restaurant.

Promotional information for New China Wok is not provided in the available reviews. Takeout restaurants often have combination meal deals or specials listed on their menus or advertised in-store. To learn about any current promotions or discounts at New China Wok, it is recommended to contact them directly via phone or inquire when placing an order. They may also have a menu available online through third-party delivery platforms or their own website if they have one.

In conclusion, New China Wok in Charleston, SC, presents a mixed profile based on the limited customer feedback. While one reviewer experienced significant issues with food quality and service, another found their Singapore Mei Fun to be exceptional and was satisfied with other dishes as well. This suggests a potential inconsistency in their offerings or a wide range in customer experiences. As a primarily takeout establishment located on Harbor View Road, potential customers may want to consider the specific dishes they are interested in and perhaps look for more recent or a greater number of reviews to form a more comprehensive opinion. Contacting the restaurant directly for menu details, service options (dine-in, delivery), and any current promotions is also advisable before making a decision.

Not the place to go if craving Chinese. Ribs and chicken were so charred and dry we couldn’t even eat it. The shrimp toast was simply disgusting. The crab Rangoon, rice, and sweet and sour shrimp were edible but didn’t really hit the spot. Was hoping for a yummy local Chinese spot but sadly this isn’t it. Also, children running the counter and getting upset with them when they count the money too slow? Felt bad for the kid. Maybe it was simply a rough night with no babysitter and trying to teach a lesson of earning, but felt the patience wasn’t there. Sadly, will not return.

We visited Charleston, South Carolina and it has become a family tradition that we usually eat Chinese food at our hotel room on the first night when we can’t go out and dine at a restaurant. I came across this Chinese take out place and saw tgat it was highly rated in Google maps. As always, I am in a continuous search for the best Singapore Mei Fun at every Chinese restaurant or take out place that we go to. By far, this is the best Singapore-style noodles that I have tasted!!! It was absolutely delicious!!!!! The balance of flavor - the heat from the curry, the freshness of the ingredients and the overall portion size is a lot (but I was able to finish in one sitting). I was also very satisfied and pleased with our other orders as well - triple delight and fried dumplings. I highly recommend this place and will sure be back when we visit Charleston again.

Great service; excellent food! The Chef's Special Seafood (see photo) had huge shrimp and scallops, plus succulent crab. Barebones in-house dining, so best for takeout.

Not so great. I was pretty grossed out by how dirty the restaurant is. Wallpaper is peeling, tables were sticky, and even outside there was trash that hadn’t moved for weeks. Food was ok, but it’s just so dirty in there. 😶
