Recent online reviews for New China Restaurant paint a starkly negative picture of the dining experience, highlighting significant issues with food quality, customer service, and even the physical setup of the restaurant. Potential customers are strongly advised to consider this feedback carefully.
One reviewer expressed extreme disappointment, stating, "I love Chinese food but this was absolutely the worst Chinese food I’ve ever tasted." They detailed multiple problems with their order, including "old and gritty" rice, rib tips that tasted "so old and bad," and teriyaki chicken that was "greasy and full of fat." The reviewer also noted that the food had a "horrible smell" and ultimately threw the entire plate away. This severe criticism indicates significant issues with the freshness and quality of the ingredients and the preparation methods at New China Restaurant.
Another reviewer was even more direct and vehement in their condemnation, simply stating, "DO NOT ORDER HERE!!!!! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FOOD." This emphatic warning underscores a profoundly negative experience encompassing both the culinary and service aspects of the establishment.
Adding to the concerns about customer service, a separate review recounted a frustrating interaction during a phone call. The reviewer stated that "THEY HUNG UP THE PHONE ON ME BECAUSE I ASKED THEM TO REPEAT THEMSELVES 3 TIMES." This behavior is highly unprofessional and suggests a severe lack of patience and disregard for customer communication.
A review from December 25, 2022, described a "Very odd set up," noting that customers had to place their orders "through a window that was partly made with cardboard." This unusual physical arrangement suggests a potentially makeshift or poorly maintained environment, which might raise concerns about the overall professionalism and standards of the restaurant.
Further criticism of the food quality comes from another reviewer who stated that the "Food tasted like burned oil." This indicates a significant flaw in the cooking process, potentially affecting the flavor and overall edibility of the dishes.
One reviewer offered a more subjective but nonetheless negative impression, stating, "To me, personally, it looked like someone who is afraid of human interaction and wanted to be closed off from the world." While subjective, this comment, combined with the report of being hung up on, contributes to a picture of an unwelcoming and potentially isolating customer experience.
Another reviewer emphasized the holistic nature of dining out or ordering takeout, stating that it "is about the experience and not just the flavors." They concluded that New China Restaurant "missed all the marks," indicating a complete failure to provide a satisfactory experience across all aspects, including food and service.
Finally, a reviewer who claims to not give poor reviews often stated that this negative assessment was "earned," labeling the experience as the "Worst Chinese food and worst customer service" out of their "1,000+ reviews." This powerful statement from someone who typically avoids harsh criticism underscores the severity of the issues encountered at New China Restaurant.
Based on this overwhelming negative feedback, New China Restaurant appears to be facing significant challenges in terms of food quality, customer service, and potentially the physical environment of the establishment. The issues raised are not minor and suggest a pattern of deeply unsatisfactory experiences for multiple customers.
As a Chinese restaurant, New China Restaurant would typically offer a menu featuring a variety of standard Chinese-American dishes, such as fried rice, noodles, various meat and poultry preparations, and appetizers. However, the reviews strongly suggest that the quality and preparation of these dishes are severely lacking. The reports of old ingredients, greasy food, and a taste of burned oil indicate fundamental problems in the kitchen.
The environment of New China Restaurant is described as having an "odd set up" with ordering through a window partly made of cardboard, which suggests a makeshift and potentially unappealing physical space. One reviewer also perceived a sense of isolation or lack of welcome. These comments do not paint a picture of a comfortable or inviting dining atmosphere.
In terms of services, New China Restaurant offers takeout, as indicated by the phone ordering attempt. However, the reported incident of being hung up on highlights a severe deficiency in customer service. The ordering setup through a window also deviates from the norm and may contribute to a less personal and satisfactory service experience.
Features that might typically attract customers to a Chinese restaurant, such as delicious food, friendly service, and a pleasant environment, are conspicuously absent in the provided reviews for New China Restaurant. Instead, the recurring themes are poor food quality, terrible customer service, and an unusual and potentially off-putting physical setup.
Promotional information is not mentioned in the provided reviews. Given the overwhelmingly negative feedback regarding the fundamental aspects of food and service, any potential promotions would likely be ineffective in attracting or retaining customers. Addressing the core issues appears to be a far more pressing need for this establishment.
In conclusion, the recent online reviews for New China Restaurant in South Hill, VA, are overwhelmingly negative, citing severe issues with food quality (old ingredients, greasy food, taste of burned oil), terrible customer service (including hanging up on customers), and a very odd and potentially unappealing physical setup for ordering. Potential customers are strongly advised to take this feedback into serious consideration before deciding to order from or visit this establishment. The issues reported suggest a fundamental failure to meet basic standards for a Chinese restaurant in terms of both food and service. Exploring alternative dining options in the South Hill area would likely be a prudent choice based on the experiences shared by other customers. Contacting the restaurant directly at (434) 955-2111 or +1 434-955-2111 to inquire about these issues might be an option, but the consistency and severity of the negative feedback warrant extreme caution.

I love Chinese food but this was absolutely the worst Chinese food I’ve ever tasted. The rice was old and gritty. The rib tips tasted so old and bad, and the teriyaki chicken was greasy and full of fat. The food smelled horrible as well. I threw the plate away.
DO NOT ORDER HERE!!!!! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FOOD. THEY HUNG UP THE PHONE ON ME BECAUSE I ASKED THEM TO REPEAT THEMSELVES 3 TIMES. Very odd set up (Dec 25, 2022). You had to order through a window that was partly made with cardboard. Food tasted like burned oil. To me, personally, it looked like someone who is afraid of human interaction and wanted to be closed off from the world. Eating out or take out is about the experience and not just the flavors. This place missed all the marks. I don't give poor reviews often, but this one is earned. Worst Chinese food and worst customer service of my 1,000+ reviews.
Ordered egg rolls. They are smaller than some other restaurants, and have an old corn oil aftertaste. It's just like some other reviewers state, the oil should really be changed. It ruined the taste of the food. The gentleman at the window was cordial though.
I ordered pork fried rice and almost threw up when I started eating it!!!!! The food just smelled and tasted spoiled. I called to ask what could we do about it and the owner was very rude and raised his voice saying I could get a refund or something else but it would have to be today only!!! (In a very nasty manner and tone) Not my first time eating here but WILL be my LAST!!. I do not recommend!!! They are serving old food people
The food was really good but the rice was kinda ehh but other than that the food was really good and would recommend it five stars keep up the great work
