About New China
New China, located at 436 E Main St in Middletown, Pennsylvania, presents itself as a Chinese Restaurant primarily focused on takeout service. Based on customer reviews, this establishment offers a dual culinary experience, catering to a broad range of palates. While it features the familiar selection of Americanized Chinese dishes that many expect from a takeout restaurant, it also boasts a secret weapon: an authentic Chinese menu specifically designed for the students of the nearby University. This suggests that New China aims to bridge the gap between mainstream American-Chinese cuisine and the more traditional flavors sought by those with a deeper familiarity with Chinese cooking.
Information regarding the specific environment of New China is limited in the provided reviews. However, the description as a "very solid Chinese takeout place" implies a functional setting geared towards efficient order preparation and pickup rather than an elaborate dine-in ambiance. The focus appears to be on the food itself and the convenience of takeout service for the local community and the nearby student population.
The primary service offered by New China seems to be takeout. The positive review explicitly refers to it as a "Chinese takeout place," indicating that this is their main mode of operation. Customers can likely place orders over the phone or potentially in person at the counter for pickup. The mention of an "authentic Chinese menu primarily catering to the students at the nearby University" suggests that they are equipped to handle specialized orders and cater to a specific demographic with different culinary preferences. However, a significant point of concern raised in another review is the issue of rude customer service encountered during an in-person order pickup. This suggests that while their food may be commendable, the interpersonal aspect of their service can be inconsistent and may negatively impact the overall customer experience.
One of the key features of New China is its dual menu. According to a positive review, they offer the "standard food you would expect with Americanized Chinese dishes," which are described as "pretty good." This implies that customers looking for familiar favorites like General Tso's Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, or various chow mein and fried rice options are likely to find satisfactory renditions at New China. However, the more distinctive feature is their "authentic Chinese menu," which is highlighted as "outstanding." The reviewer specifically praises their "mama tofu" as "fantastic," suggesting that this authentic menu contains dishes that are particularly flavorful and well-prepared, appealing to those seeking a more genuine taste of Chinese cuisine.
The existence of this authentic menu, geared towards university students who may have a greater familiarity with or preference for traditional Chinese flavors, is a significant selling point for New China. It positions them as a restaurant that can cater to a diverse clientele, from those seeking comforting Americanized dishes to those craving more authentic regional specialties. The positive feedback on the mama tofu from the authentic menu indicates a potential for culinary excellence beyond the standard takeout fare.
However, a starkly contrasting feature is the severely negative feedback regarding customer service. One reviewer recounted an experience of being treated with extreme rudeness by the person behind the counter when asking for extra duck sauce. The reviewer described the staff member as "yelling," "very aggressive," and "very rude," leading to a firm decision never to return. This incident highlights a critical area where New China appears to be lacking and could significantly deter potential customers, regardless of the quality of their food. The stark contrast between the positive feedback on the authentic menu and the negative feedback on service suggests an inconsistency in the overall customer experience.
Currently, the provided reviews do not contain any information about specific promotional offers at New China. To inquire about any discounts, specials, or new menu items, especially from their authentic Chinese menu, it would be best to contact them directly at (717) 948-5000 or +1 717-948-5000. Given their proximity to the University, they might have special offers or menu items tailored to students that are not mentioned in general online reviews. Calling them directly would be the most reliable way to obtain information about any current promotions.
In conclusion, New China in Middletown, PA, presents a mixed picture based on the available customer reviews. On the one hand, it offers the familiar comfort of Americanized Chinese takeout dishes, which are reportedly "pretty good." More interestingly, it also features an "outstanding" authentic Chinese menu, particularly praised for dishes like mama tofu, catering to those seeking more traditional flavors, especially the nearby university students. This dual menu is a significant feature that sets it apart. However, a serious concern is raised by a review detailing extremely rude customer service, which could be a major deterrent for potential customers. While the food, particularly from the authentic menu, seems to be a strong point, the inconsistency in service quality is a critical factor for local users to consider. To learn about any promotions or the full scope of their menus, direct contact with the restaurant is recommended.

Very solid Chinese takeout place. It has the standard food you would expect with Americanized Chinese dishes which are pretty good. But the secret is they have an authentic Chinese menu primarily catering to the students at the nearby University which is outstanding their mama tofu is fantastic
Extremely rude. Went there got an order asked for duck sauce. Guy behind counter said it's some in the bag. I said ok but may I have a couple more. Then he started yelling it's some in the bag. Very aggressive Very rude. Won't ever be back there again
Last night was my first time ordering from here. I ordered pork lo mein and it was the best lo mein I've ever had. The noodles were dark, richly colored, not sad beige noodles like everywhere else. Usually I have to drown my food in soy sauce and I thought to myself man they only gave me 3 but I didn't even need it! Soooo good!!
The food was delicious but the place is small and smelled weird in one area but it’s a decent place. I would recommend take out instead of dine in.
I have eaten here for as long as I can remember and it's always good and good portions never failed me yet
