The true heart of any restaurant lies in its food, and Mountain House Rowland Heights 川山甲 offers a menu centered around Sichuan specialties. Sichuan cuisine is famous for its complex flavors, often characterized by the liberal use of chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, and various aromatic ingredients. This results in dishes that can be both intensely flavorful and tantalizingly spicy, often featuring a unique numbing sensation from the Sichuan peppercorns. One reviewer who identifies as having Sichuan friends praised the food as "very tasty and real Sichuan food," highlighting the authenticity of the flavors. They also noted the "big portions" and the beautiful presentation of the dishes, suggesting that the restaurant pays attention to both the quantity and the visual appeal of their offerings.

However, not all feedback has been uniformly positive. One detailed review presents a contrasting perspective on several dishes. The garlic pork belly was described as a "mess," with bitter garlic and under-seasoned pork lacking basic elements like soy sauce or vinegar. The reviewer found it bland with an unpleasant aftertaste, further criticizing the uneven knife work. The fried eel, while properly fried, was noted to lack fragrance and possessed an aggressive spiciness that overshadowed other potential flavors, almost turning bitter. The steamed fish with chives was considered the most acceptable dish, with tender fish, but the chives were deemed unseasoned and an afterthought.

These contrasting reviews highlight the subjective nature of taste and the potential for variability in the dining experience. While one customer found the food to be authentic and delicious, another experienced significant shortcomings in several dishes. It's important for potential diners to consider these different perspectives when making their decision.

Despite the mixed feedback on the food quality, the positive comments regarding the restaurant's appearance and service suggest that Mountain House Rowland Heights 川山甲 has certain strengths. The mention of "good price" by a satisfied customer also indicates that the restaurant offers value for money, which can be an important factor for many diners.

For those looking to explore Sichuan cuisine in Rowland Heights, Mountain House Rowland Heights 川山甲 presents an option with a visually appealing environment and reportedly good service. The positive review from someone with Sichuan connections suggests that authentic flavors may be present in some dishes. However, the critical review indicates that consistency and execution might be areas for improvement. Potential customers may want to consider trying a range of dishes to form their own opinion on the authenticity and quality of the food.

Opening a Szechuan restaurant without ever tasting real Szechuan food is a bold move. The garlic pork belly was a mess: the garlic was bitter, the pork itself wasn't seasoned, and somehow, they forgot the basics like soy sauce or vinegar. Instead of the bold, layered flavors you expect, it was just bland meat with a bitter aftertaste. The knife work didn’t help either — uneven cuts made the whole thing even less appealing. The fried eel was at least fried properly, but that’s about where the good news stops. It had no fragrance and was so aggressively spicy it almost turned bitter too. Instead of building flavor, the heat just steamrolled over everything else. The steamed fish with chives was the only thing that barely held together. The fish was tender enough, but the chives were completely unseasoned, tossed on like an afterthought, bringing nothing to the dish. The restaurant looks great — clean, shiny, koi fish swimming around — but honestly, I’d suggest the chef trade all the fancy decor for a one-way ticket to Chengdu.

Very tasty and real Sichuan food! Big portions, nice service, and the restaurant looks great. The food also looks beautiful, and the price is really good. I already told my Sichuan friends about this place!

Pickle pepper black fish probably the best dishes of all as the fish slice was in good thickness and fried/boiled just fine for the best texture. However, like all other dishes, you will feel salty and need to drink lots of tea or water. The worst dish of the night will be the roast beef with bun. Not sure why this dish is one of the signatures but the bun actually tastes better than the beef itself while overall, nothing special and don't feel they mingle well with each other. I will say overall, an average spicy shop in town but not really my choice. The deco are elegant and the staff are friendly. Good for business dining though.

Mapo tofu was 100000/10 oh my gosh. The tofu was soft and silky, mala spice was numbing but not overwhelming, and the peppers mixed in added a great texture. It's such a highlight! The pork belly cucumber swing was all right, it's a little hard to coat the meat with the sauce and it tastes bland without. I also loved the chili oil wonton and the sesame noodles. Classic dishes, and the tea that we were served was so fragrant and deep. The decor is very traditional Chinese and brings you back to historic times. It's a great spot for a nice meal!

Overall, the food here was great. The lasi chicken and lamb stew were the best things we ordered. The map tofu was way too salty for us, so you definitely need rice with it. The spicy fish I felt is better at other places because they use a softer fish. The fish here was a bit chewy, but the flavor was still good The service here was amazing. Everyone was super nice and very attentive. We would definitely come back and try the other dishes. But we probably won't order the mapo tofu again.
