About Moon Garden Restaurant

Located at 578 N Vineyard Blvd in Honolulu, Moon Garden Restaurant offers a distinctive Chinese dining experience that goes beyond the typical restaurant format. As a Chinese restaurant catering to local users, Moon Garden distinguishes itself through a combination of delicious, reasonably priced food and unique services that create a memorable dining occasion, particularly for families and large groups. The positive customer reviews highlight not only the quality of the cuisine but also the exceptional service and unusual policies that make this establishment stand out in Honolulu's culinary landscape.

The environment at Moon Garden Restaurant seems to be one that can comfortably accommodate large groups, as evidenced by the mention of two full 12-top tables being served simultaneously on a busy Friday. This suggests that the restaurant has the capacity and layout to handle larger gatherings, making it an ideal choice for family meals and group outings. While specific details about the decor or ambiance are not extensively described, the focus on accommodating large parties and the efficient service despite a busy setting imply a functional and welcoming space for diners to enjoy their meals.

The services offered at Moon Garden Restaurant are particularly noteworthy for their unique and customer-centric approach. One of the most striking features is their Bring Your Own Beverage (BYOB) policy, allowing customers to enjoy their preferred alcoholic drinks with their meal without incurring restaurant markups. Additionally, they also have a Bring Your Own Dessert (BYOD) policy, which is quite unusual and suggests a very accommodating attitude towards their patrons, perhaps encouraging a more home-style or celebratory meal experience. The restaurant also offers takeout services, catering to customers who prefer to enjoy their food off-premises. A highly recommended service is the order-ahead option for their honey BBQ pork ribs, indicating a popular dish that might require advance notice due to its preparation or demand. Perhaps most remarkably, Moon Garden Restaurant offers a custom cooking service, where customers can bring in their own fish and lobster, and the kitchen will prepare it for them – a truly exceptional feature that speaks to their flexibility and willingness to cater to specific customer preferences. The efficient handling of a busy Friday night with multiple large tables and takeout orders, seemingly managed by one person at the front of the house, underscores the dedication and capability of the staff.

A key feature of Moon Garden Restaurant is the quality and variety of its Chinese cuisine, all offered at very reasonable prices. Customers have specifically praised dishes such as eggplant, walnut prawn, beef stew, and roast duck, describing them as "delicious and satisfying." This suggests a menu that offers a range of classic Chinese dishes, prepared to a high standard of taste and quality. The honey BBQ pork ribs, which require ordering ahead, are highlighted as a "must-try," indicating a signature dish that is particularly popular among patrons. The willingness to cook customer-provided seafood further showcases the restaurant's culinary capabilities and its commitment to providing a personalized dining experience. The positive feedback on the taste and satisfaction of multiple dishes suggests a consistently high standard across their menu.

The fact that parking is available is another significant benefit, especially for a restaurant in Honolulu where parking can often be challenging. This amenity adds to the convenience of dining at Moon Garden Restaurant, making it more accessible for local users who may be driving to the location, particularly for family meals or large group gatherings.

Moon Garden Restaurant appears to be particularly well-suited for dining with large groups. The capacity to handle two 12-top tables simultaneously, coupled with the BYOB and BYOD policies, makes it an attractive venue for family celebrations or gatherings where attendees might have specific preferences for beverages or wish to bring their own desserts. The opportunity to try a variety of dishes when dining with a large group is also highlighted as a benefit, allowing everyone at the table to sample different aspects of the menu.

In summary, Moon Garden Restaurant in Honolulu offers a compelling package of delicious and reasonably priced Chinese cuisine, coupled with unique and highly customer-friendly services such as BYOB, BYOD, and the custom cooking of customer-provided seafood. Their ability to accommodate and efficiently serve large groups, along with the availability of parking, adds to its appeal for local users. The must-try honey BBQ pork ribs (ordered ahead) and the positive feedback on other dishes like eggplant, walnut prawn, beef stew, and roast duck indicate a high standard of food quality. Had a wonderful family meal here. The woman working did a great job taking care of the front of the house by herself on a busy Friday with 2 full 12 top tables, a couple of random walk-ins plus lots of take out orders. BYOB and BYOD (dessert) 😊 The order-ahead honey BBQ pork ribs are a MUST! We brought in our own fish and lobster, which they did a fantastic job preparing for us 😋 It's always great dining with a large group at a Chinese restaurant because you get a chance to try lots of dishes. Everything was delicious!

Moon Garden on Vineyard has always been our family favorite. Solid food and authentic Chinese comfort food favorites. Don’t be fooled, it looks small from the outside, but once inside you’ll see how busy they are. Be patient with the servers and be mindful English isn’t their first language.

I'm really glad that this restaurant survived the pandemic. I ate there this week, the first time in ages, and it seems to be thriving. It's a small restaurant, and by the time I left (around 8pm) the place was packed. The house specialty cake (crispy) noodles, sweet-sour pork and walnut shrimp were solid and satisfying. Their website menu is outdated; prices are generally $14.95-$15.95 per dish. Also, they don't serve alcohol any more. Service took some time. They're working hard and are probably understaffed, like so many businesses these days.

If you're hoping for a true Chinese restaurant experience...This is the place! It's a hole in the wall-like place with a variety of different tables, at different levels, some with table cloths, some without, the floor had stuff all over it and our table was a bit sticky...Customer service was, to me, true Chinese style: grumpy, no eye contact, but they know you are there. When we finally got a table, we didn't know if we were supposed to walk up and order or what the deal was. So, honestly, the first 15 minutes, I was pretty over the place. We managed to order and got our hot tea so that was the start of the turnaround. Then, our food came out and, seriously, they do food well here!! We got the Won Ton Soup (for my cold, I wanted a soup and it hit the spot), Char Siu Fried Rice (sooooo good!), Steamed Fish (because we love fish!), and the Drunken Clams (served cold which I didn't expect, but still so good). Paying our bill was as tricky as trying to find the hot mustard dishes and placing our order, but eventually you get someone's attention. Parking can be tight, but we got lucky. I highly recommend trying to make a reservation, if you can. Or order takeout which it seemed a lot of people did. All in all, would I go back? Yes, for sure. I honestly can't wait to order other things that people rave about. It's definitely a gem.
