Ming Yuan Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant located at 209 Southgate Ave in Daly City, CA 94015. Situated on a hillside near Westlake Mall, this establishment, formerly known as King Wah, offers a wide array of authentic and delicious Chinese dishes to the local community. According to customer reviews, Ming Yuan Restaurant has garnered a reputation for both its quality food and exceptional service. One reviewer, who has visited multiple times for both dine-in and takeout, recalled their first experience during Covid when only to-go service was available, noting that the menu at that time was "great, affordable, and fulfilling." This long-time resident also mentioned the restaurant's previous name, King Wah, a place they had often passed by but never had the chance to visit. Upon dining in at Ming Yuan, the reviewer observed that it was a "full house," but the wait times were not long, attributing this to the "well trained and friendly staffs." They highly recommend visiting Ming Yuan, especially suggesting arriving a bit early due to potentially challenging parking in the area, and expressed a definite intention to return.
Another reviewer shared their experience of choosing Ming Yuan after a disappointing visit to another restaurant. They noted its location on a hill, alongside other businesses and not far from Westlake Mall. While they acknowledged that the parking situation could be a "little complicated," they also pointed out that there is "plenty of parking space around the restaurant, just not immediately within the vicinity." This suggests that while immediate parking might be limited, customers can still find parking options nearby with a little effort.
This reviewer also had fond memories of the location as the former King Wah, a "BIG staple" of their childhood, and expressed pleasure in seeing that Ming Yuan has become a "better version" of that restaurant with a new name. This indicates a positive evolution of the establishment while retaining some connection to its past.
A significant aspect highlighted in one detailed review was Ming Yuan's capacity to accommodate large groups, as their family function included 11 people. The reviewer provided a rating breakdown of their experience, offering valuable insights into various aspects of the restaurant:
Food (8/10): The reviewer recommended the party combos for large groups, noting that the $498 combo, designed for 10 to 11 people, was "more than enough to feed everybody." While acknowledging it was "a little bit more on the expensive side," they deemed it a "very smart financial decision" for large gatherings. This combo included a variety of dishes such as BBQ Combo Platter, Bamboo Pith & Seafood Soup, and more. The reviewer found the BBQ platter to be somewhat lacking but praised the "whole Peking duck" and the "sea cucumber with mushrooms and pea sprouts," describing the texture as "spongy and saucy" with a generous portion size. A surprising highlight was the dessert, which included not only red bean soup but also typical dim sum items like sponge cake and egg custard buns, which were unexpected additions to the menu.
Service (9.5/10): The service received by the large group was described as "pretty superb" and "very responsive," which was greatly appreciated. The staff "did everything in their might" to ensure a good experience and a spectacular time for the 11-person party. The fact that they did not have to wait for a large table was significant to the group, and the professionalism of the waitresses and the owner, who treated them with respect and made them feel like family, was highly commended.
Atmosphere (7/10): The reviewer noted that the hillside location contributed to a slightly "tight" space, making it a bit difficult to move around the tables. While appreciating the excellent service, they mentioned that some other patrons lacked manners, requiring the reviewer to intervene on a couple of occasions. This suggests that while the restaurant's staff and management strive to create a pleasant environment, external factors such as the behavior of other customers can occasionally impact the overall atmosphere.
Overall, the reviews paint a picture of Ming Yuan Restaurant as a reliable establishment offering authentic Chinese cuisine with a strong emphasis on customer service. The ability to comfortably accommodate large parties, the diverse menu featuring both classic dishes and unexpected delights like dim sum for dessert, and the attentive and professional staff are significant features. While parking might require a little extra effort and the space could be perceived as somewhat tight, the quality of the food and service appear to outweigh these minor inconveniences for many patrons.
There is no specific promotional information mentioned in the provided reviews. However, the recommendation of the party combos for large groups could be seen as a value offering for families and gatherings. Local users interested in dining at Ming Yuan Restaurant, especially for group events, may want to inquire about the various party combo options and any other current promotions or specials when making their reservations.
In conclusion, Ming Yuan Restaurant in Daly City, formerly known as King Wah, is a Chinese restaurant that has evolved into a highly regarded establishment known for its authentic and delicious Chinese dishes, superb and responsive service, and its capacity to cater to large groups. The menu offers a wide variety of options, including notable dishes like Peking duck and a surprising selection of dim sum for dessert, especially within their party combos. While parking might require a short walk and the dining space can be a bit tight, the overall experience, driven by the excellent staff and quality food, makes Ming Yuan a highly recommended choice for local users seeking a reliable and enjoyable Chinese dining experience, whether for a casual meal or a large family gathering.

Been here a couple of times for dine in and take out. I remembered my first visit was during Covid where they only offered to go. The menu they had that time was great, affordable, and fulfilling. And yes back in the days this place was called King Wah which I never had the chance to visit but to just pass by. The time I came here to dine, it was a full house but waits were not long thanks to their well trained and friendly staffs. Their menu offers many authentic delicious Chinese dishes. I highly recommend coming a bit early because the parking is not the best in the area. Definitely will be back!
After a really bad experience at another restaurant in the Sunset we decided to give this one in Daly City a try. Located not far from Westlake Mall, it’s located on top of a hill, alongside other businesses. The parking situation is a little complicated, still; however, there is plenty of parking space around the restaurant, just not immediately within the vicinity. This used to be a King Wah, which was a BIG staple of my childhood — but I’m glad to see that it became a better version of that restaurant and renamed as well. This restaurant definitely had the capacity to seat big parties like our family function, which we had 11 people. Here’s how our experience went at this restaurant — keep in mind that I did put our experiences over the rest of the reviews that I saw online: Food: 8/10 I’d recommend getting the party combos for 11 people since it’s actually more than enough to feed everybody. A little bit more on the expensive side, but a very smart financial decision when eating with so many people. We got the $498 combo which consisted of 10 to 11 different dishes — one of them being BBQ Combo Platter, Bamboo Pith & Seafood Soup, and more. The BBQ platter left my taste palates wanting more honestly. The highlight would probably have to be the whole Peking duck that we got — alongside the sea cucumber with mushrooms and pea sprouts. The texture was spongy and saucy and honestly, with the amount given to us, I can’t complain about it. What blew me away was the dessert: not only was it red bean soup, but it was also typical dim sum items that we didn’t really expect to be part of the menu. With a sponge cake and egg custard buns. Service: 9.5/10 The service given to us was pretty superb — it was very responsive and we really appreciate it a lot. Despite the fact that there were 11 people in our group, they did everything in their might to make sure that our experience was a good one, and that we had a spectacular time. The fact that we didn’t have to wait for the big table meant a significant amount to us, and the professionalism that the waitresses and the owner treated us with respect, integrity, and made us also feel like family at home. Atmosphere: 7/10 Given that this restaurant was on a hillside, I’m not gonna blame the restaurant, but it was a little tight in terms of space. It was hard to get in and get out from the tables, and while I had appreciated that the service was superb, the patrons around us were not as nice, and also lacked manners. We had told several tables several times to mind their own business, of which I had to talk to them in a very condescending manner. Overall, the community around Daly City is nice, but just be aware of people who will act like buttholes.
This place may have been a hidden gem 5 years ago but everyone knows about it now because it is always packed. You can consider this koi palace's little brother the wait times are shorter and price is a bit less, but quality and flavor are still there. The usual har gows and rice rolls are always good here. They also have the tim ho wan style BBQ buns. Cant go wrong with this local dim sum spot if you're in the area. There is also plenty of parking if you're willing to walk 2 blocks from the Westlake plaza.
This used to be King Wah. I remember coming here a few times previously for the meals after funerals. Ming Yuan did a good job with re-decorating. The big partition sliding wall in the middle is new. The restaurant was full at 11:30am on a Wednesday. Luckily there was only four of us and got a table. It was about $120 for four people. Not bad. The food tasted OK. My only complaint was, there's a photo of a seafood bird's nest on their onlinee photos, posted by them. When I showed them the photo and asked for it, there were some confusion. The nest part was not available. We instead got crispy noodles instead. We remembered the waiter guy from when he worked at another dim sum restaurant in San Mateo. He joked that it is not him if he owed us money. Service was friendly.
The steam dumplings were large and delicious as usual. But the rice noodle Hong Kong style did not come with BBQ Pork which was disappointing. The crepes were very good and the shrimps were really large. And the Chinese broccoli was fresh and crunchy (excellent).
