About May's Bangkok Express
May's Bangkok Express is a Thai restaurant located at 254 W Nine Mile Rd, Ferndale, MI 48220, USA. While categorized under the platform as a Chinese Restaurant, May's Bangkok Express offers Thai cuisine. Recent customer reviews present contrasting opinions on the dining experience.
One customer, revisiting after over a decade, found the restaurant to be still mediocre. They ordered the Pad See-Ew and described it as excessively wet and soggy, even more so than typical curries elsewhere. They expressed confusion over positive reviews, suggesting a better Thai option nearby. This reviewer found the chicken to be overcooked, likely pre-cooked, and the noodles insufficient for the amount of sauce. The provided fish sauce was deemed of cheap quality due to its extreme saltiness and off-taste. Additionally, a mildly soapy aroma was detected in the dish. This customer strongly advised against dining at May's Bangkok Express.
In contrast, another customer had a very positive first experience, describing the food as "soooo good" and memorable. Upon a second visit a week later, ordering the same dish, they found it still good but not as exceptional as the first time, speculating about a different cook. Despite this slight inconsistency, they still considered it "some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had" and indicated it would become their regular spot.
The provided reviews highlight a significant inconsistency in food quality, particularly concerning the Pad See-Ew. While one customer experienced a poorly prepared dish with overcooked chicken and excessive sauce, another had an initially outstanding experience followed by a still-positive but less impressive second visit. The quality of ingredients, such as the fish sauce, was also a point of criticism. The environment and service are not specifically detailed in these reviews.
Currently, there is no promotional information available in these reviews. Local users considering May's Bangkok Express should be aware of the reported inconsistencies in food quality. It might be prudent to consider trying dishes that have received positive mentions, keeping in mind that experiences can vary.

My first visit in over a decade. I remembered it being mediocre then, and it's not better now. I decided to try the Pad See-Ew, and got the wettest, soggiest thing I've been served. Seriously, most places' curries are usually not this wet. I don't know what is wrong with everyone giving this good reviews - there's a much better Thai restaurant a few doors down! The only reason I was here, not there, being that they were on vacation. The chicken was overcooked, like it was pre-cooked and just added to the sauce. The noodles were fine, in spite of there being nowhere near enough of them for the amount of sauce. They gave me fish sauce when I asked, but it's one of the cheap brands because it's incredibly salty (even for fish sauce) and tastes off instead of funky. The sauce had a mildly soapy aroma at times that didn't help matters any. And no, it wasn't cilantro - there isn't any, and I love cilantro. The attached photos show the dish as served, the wet remainder after, and the napkins after wiping my beard multiple times. In short, don't waste your time or money. Go anywhere else.
The first time I had this food was a week ago and it was soooo good, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Went back today and ordered the same thing and it’s good but not as good as the first time. Maybe it’s a different cook there today. Still some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. This will be my go to spot now.
Food tasted good. Wish I had asked for a higher spice level. I ordered drunken noodles with chicken and shrimp, a spring roll and thai iced tea. After placing my order, I had to step out to pay for parking because most of the street parking pay booths do not work. When I got back my food was waiting on the counter. If you are dine in, you order at the counter and pay first. The atmosphere is nice. Smooth jazz plays with the occasional talking in between from what I assume to be a radio station. When I retrieved my food I was confused because the noodles aren't wide noodles. They only have thin noodles similar the ones found in Pad thai. I was hoping for wide flat noodles. I got my food and took my seat. The food taste good, but I only recommend the spring roll. It was nice. Classic taste and fried. The thai milk tea was more milky than expected. I'm used to a deeper orange color showing the balance of tea and milk. This is a light orange color as seen in the photo. More milk than tea. Seems most around here don't order spice so the levels are lower. If you like spice like me, I recommend othering hot. It won't be that spicy. The people who work here are really kind and having local connections, so if you become a regular, they will greet you in a more friendly manner and maybe even remember your name.
My husband and I, along with several friends, have been devoted patrons of this gem for the past eight years, and it remains our favorite Thai restaurant in Michigan. As self-proclaimed Thai food connoisseurs—and having had the privilege of visiting Thailand—we can confidently say this place is a standout. The dishes are consistently packed with bold, authentic flavors and are always perfectly prepared. Not only is the food absolutely delicious, but the value is truly unmatched. The generous portions and incredible quality make the price point almost too good to be true. We’ve been ordering from here at least once a week—sometimes twice—for the past seven years, and it never disappoints. The efficiency is remarkable, with most orders ready in about 10 minutes. For those new to the menu, we highly recommend trying the combo options, which include fried rice, a crispy chicken wing, and a flavorful soup alongside your entrée. This restaurant has become a beloved part of our weekly routine, and it continues to deliver exceptional meals with every visit. Truly, a hidden treasure we can’t recommend enough.
I had the Curry Chicken with White Rice and it’s was absolutely delicious. I also had ordered fried chicken wings. Hands-down, the best I have ever gotten outside of a chicken restaurant. Try this combo together: Curry, Chicken and Chicken Wings!!! You will have no regrets!
