About Master Gua Malatang & BBQ
Welcome to Master Gua Malatang & BBQ, a distinctive Chinese restaurant located at 145 Pelton Center Way in San Leandro, California. This establishment offers a unique culinary experience that goes beyond the typical Chinese restaurant format, specializing in a customizable "build your own" Asian-style soup concept alongside traditional BBQ offerings. For local users seeking a more interactive and personalized dining adventure, Master Gua Malatang & BBQ presents an intriguing option.
One of the standout features of Master Gua Malatang & BBQ, as highlighted by enthusiastic customer reviews, is the "build your own soup" experience. This concept allows diners to create their perfect bowl of soup by selecting from a wide array of fresh ingredients, noodles, and flavorful broths. This interactive approach empowers customers to tailor their meal precisely to their preferences, making it a highly personalized dining experience. The popularity of this feature is evident in the positive feedback from patrons who particularly enjoy this aspect, especially on weekends.
Among the broth options, the Tom Yam stands out as a highly recommended choice. Described as a Thai-style broth with prominent ginger and lemongrass flavors, it has been lauded as "the best soup broth" one reviewer had ever tasted. This suggests that Master Gua Malatang & BBQ takes pride in its broth preparations, offering unique and flavorful bases that elevate the soup experience. For those who enjoy the vibrant and aromatic flavors of Thai cuisine, the Tom Yam broth is a must-try.
The selection of ingredients available for customization is also noteworthy. Fresh fish is specifically mentioned as a favorite addition, praised for its mild taste. Alongside fish, customers can choose from a variety of noodles, including udon, as well as beef, spinach, mushrooms, and bean sprouts. This diverse range of options ensures that there is something to appeal to every palate and dietary preference. The ability to combine these ingredients in varying proportions allows for endless possibilities in creating a unique and satisfying soup.
While the primary focus seems to be on the customizable soup, Master Gua Malatang & BBQ also offers the option to have the selected ingredients stir-fried with rice for those who prefer a non-soup dish. This provides an alternative way to enjoy the fresh ingredients and flavors available, catering to a broader range of preferences within the same establishment.
The pricing for the customizable soup is based on the weight of the selected items. One reviewer mentioned that a large bowl of soup, filled with a substantial amount of ingredients, typically costs around $16. While this is for a generously sized portion that many might find difficult to finish in one sitting, the pricing model suggests that customers should be mindful of the weight of heavier items if budget is a concern. This transparent pricing system allows diners to control the cost of their meal based on their selections.
Service at Master Gua Malatang & BBQ has been consistently praised as "super fast" and "always 👌 very detailed to their customers👍." Reviewers have noted that food is typically ready within minutes after payment, indicating an efficient and well-organized kitchen operation. Furthermore, the staff is described as "really nice," contributing to a positive and welcoming dining atmosphere. This combination of speed and friendliness enhances the overall customer experience.
Spice levels are also a consideration for those trying the soup. It is advised that individuals sensitive to spice should either avoid it or opt for the mild version, as the medium spice level is described as "quite spicy." This indicates that the restaurant offers authentic levels of heat for those who enjoy spicy food, while also providing options for those with lower spice tolerance.
While the reviews extensively cover the unique soup experience and the positive aspects of food and service, they do not provide specific details about the restaurant's environment or decor. However, the positive comments about customer service suggest a welcoming and comfortable setting. As the focus is on the interactive soup creation, the environment is likely designed to facilitate this process efficiently and comfortably for diners.
Similarly, there is no mention of specific promotional offers or special features beyond the core "build your own soup" concept and the stir-fry option. The uniqueness of the customizable soup itself can be considered a primary feature that sets Master Gua Malatang & BBQ apart from traditional Chinese restaurants. To inquire about any potential promotions or additional offerings, local users are encouraged to contact the restaurant directly at (510) 560-3338 or +1 510-560-3338.
In conclusion, Master Gua Malatang & BBQ offers a refreshing and interactive approach to Chinese cuisine in San Leandro, primarily through its customizable Asian-style soup. With a wide variety of fresh ingredients, flavorful broths like the highly recommended Tom Yam, and the option for stir-fried dishes, it caters to diverse preferences. The fast and friendly service further enhances the dining experience. While details about the environment and specific promotions are not provided, the unique "build your own soup" concept and the positive customer feedback make Master Gua Malatang & BBQ a compelling destination for local users seeking a personalized and delicious meal.

Customer Reviews
Love coming here on the weekends. Love building my own soup. Customer service is always 👌 very detailed to their customers👍
I love this place. It's a make your own Asian style soup. It's honestly the best soup I've ever had. My favorite broth is the Tam yam. It's a Thai style broth with ginger and lemongrass flavors. Seriously the best soup broth I've ever had in my life. My favorite to add is the fish they provide. It's so fresh and mild tasting. I always make my soup with udon noodles, beef, spinach, fish, mushrooms, and bean sprouts with the tom yam broth. Comes out to about $16 for a huge bowl of soup I usually can't finish in one sitting. The price is based on weight of items so be careful putting too much of heavy items if you're worried about price. There are many noodles to choose from and lots of other options. They can also stir fry ingredients with rice if you don't want soup. If you're scared of spice then don't get it or make sure you get mild. Their medium is quite spicy. It's seriously the best soup I've ever had I recommend coming to this place if you want fantastic soup. I love how I can make it exactly like how I want it. Service is super fast too you'll get your food in just a few minutes after you pay. And the people who work here are really nice.
My new favorite place! The broth is so satisfying - it is so flavorful and has just the right amount of numbing spice. Highly recommend the beef bone broth soup base with either medium spicy or spicy. The Szechuan spicy base is good too! You can choose from a variety of meats, seafood, veggies and noodles. Pick whichever ingredients you want as long as it meets the minimum 0.8 lbs (they charge you by weight) The service is top notch here. The staff is super friendly and they go above and beyond! It’s so good that we came back a week after trying it for the first time!
I have been to Master Gua for two times and the food is delicious. I love the Malatang, spicy soup based mini hotpot, and my kid loves the non spicy one with noodles. A good place for both kids and adults. It is also great that we could choose any meat or vegetables we like.
For $14.99 per pound, you can choose from a wide range of fresh veggies, meats, seafood, and noodles. They have different soup bases and spice levels too. The sauce bar lets you create your own flavors. The staff is super friendly and even gave us free fruit after our meal.
