About Mandarin House

Welcome to Mandarin House, a Chinese Restaurant located at 120 SW Ankeny St in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon. Often described as an "amazing hidden gem," Mandarin House offers a delightful dining experience characterized by super tasty food, generous portions, wonderful service, and a welcoming atmosphere for both dine-in and takeout customers. Based on recent customer reviews, Mandarin House has become a favorite for its quality of food, friendly staff, and efficient service.

One of the standout features of Mandarin House, according to customer feedback, is the exceptional quality of their sweet and sour chicken. One reviewer explicitly stated that it is "by far my favorite place to get sweet and sour chicken," emphasizing the amazing quality of the chicken itself, noting its superior taste and crispiness. This dish appears to be a signature item that keeps patrons returning. The reviewer also highlighted the substantial portion size of the entree, stating that it is "AT LEAST two meals" and often stretches to three when ordered with rice. This generous portion size offers excellent value for the price.

Beyond the sweet and sour chicken, the overall food at Mandarin House has been described as "super tasty," indicating a high standard across their menu. One group visiting from out of town for a convention found the food to be so delicious that the portions were large enough to provide them with lunch for the following day. This reinforces the theme of generous servings and satisfying flavors.

The service at Mandarin House is consistently praised as "wonderful" and "always kind." Customers have noted the attentiveness of the staff and the quick service for both dine-in and takeout orders. One reviewer mentioned never having to wait when picking up takeout and experiencing equally prompt service when dining in, with food being served quickly. The staff is also described as accommodating, as highlighted by their willingness to cater to a specific wonton order. This dedication to customer satisfaction contributes significantly to the positive dining experience.

The atmosphere of Mandarin House is also noteworthy. One reviewer who visited with teenagers mentioned that the restaurant was quiet, which was particularly appreciated by their "over stimulated teens." This suggests that Mandarin House offers a calm and peaceful environment, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a meal, especially for those seeking a respite from a bustling city or sensory overload. The fact that this group, who were likely tired from a convention, found it to be a perfect spot indicates a relaxing ambiance.

Adding to the positive experience, Mandarin House has been known to offer complimentary chilled watermelon for dessert. This thoughtful gesture left one group of diners feeling happy and satisfied at the end of their meal, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to providing a pleasant and memorable experience from start to finish.

Another significant benefit mentioned by a regular customer is the absence of the bloated feeling often associated with takeout food from other places, even when Mandarin House's food constitutes most of their meals for a weekend. This suggests that Mandarin House uses high-quality ingredients and prepares their food in a way that is easier to digest, further enhancing the appeal of their takeout options.

Located at 120 SW Ankeny St, Mandarin House is situated in a convenient downtown Portland location, easily accessible by public transportation, as one reviewer mentioned taking the MAX light rail to reach the restaurant. This accessibility makes it a great option for both locals and visitors exploring the city center.

While the reviews do not explicitly mention any specific promotional offers, the consistent praise for the generous portions and the overall value suggests that Mandarin House already provides a compelling offering for its price point. The fact that one entree can easily serve two to three meals highlights the economic benefit of dining here.

In conclusion, Mandarin House is a highly recommended Chinese Restaurant in downtown Portland, praised for its exceptionally tasty food, particularly the standout sweet and sour chicken, generous portion sizes that offer great value, wonderful and quick service, and a quiet and accommodating atmosphere. The friendly staff and thoughtful touches like complimentary watermelon add to the positive experience. Whether you are looking for a satisfying dine-in meal in a relaxed setting or a delicious and plentiful takeout option, Mandarin House appears to be a top choice for Chinese cuisine in Portland. Its convenient downtown location and consistently positive customer feedback make it a "hidden gem" worth discovering and revisiting.

We came to town for comi con and caught the max to this amazing hidden gem. It was quiet which was perfect for my over stimulated teens and service was wonderful. Food was super tasty and portions were enough that we have lunch for tomorrow. They gave us complimentary chilled watermelon for desert. Everyone left happy.

I've done dine in & take out this place. By far my favorite place to get sweet and sour chicken. The chicken is AMAZING. They quality of the chicken itself is so good and crispy. Technically, it's $18 for the entree but this is AT LEAST two meals. I usually get 3 when I order rice with it. The people are always kind. I've never had to wait when ordering take out and dine in was also quick service and quick to put food out. They were also accommodating to my order of wontons. I also don't get that bloated feeling I get when eating take out from other places, even when this is most of my meals for the weekend.

The restaurant features Chinese-only recommended menu items on the entrance and walls, suggesting that it attracts many Chinese patrons and offers authentic Chinese cuisine. We tried #304 Fried Rice Noodle (Singapore Style), #707 Mandarin Fried Chicken with Steamed Rice, and #809 Eggplant with Tofu Stewed in Hot Pot. While the chicken had a bit of an off-putting odor, the seasoning was excellent, though the meat could have been fresher. The eggplant and tofu hot pot was very delicious. My husband, a fan of Singapore noodles, found the fried rice noodles tasty. We plan to try other dishes in the future.🤤

My family got take out at 10pm as an evening snack, and this place did not disappoint. We got the soup dumplings(my favorite), the potstickers, and the general tso's chicken. All was good and definitely worth it.

I ordered general's chicken and I was brought orange chicken. I didn't see until I made it home. After the long wait I would of appreciated the order being correct. There is no spice to this chicken. I feel like they had it made already and it was end of day so let's give it to the white guy he wont know the difference...I could taste the difference clearly .. Thanks guys..
