About Mandarin House

Welcome to Mandarin House, a Chinese restaurant located at 2519 Durant Ave # D in Berkeley, California. As part of the Chinese Restaurant category, Mandarin House aims to provide the local community with a range of Chinese culinary options. Based on recent customer feedback, a notable aspect of Mandarin House is the friendliness of its owners. However, reviews also suggest that the food quality may not consistently meet expectations.

The environment of Mandarin House is not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews. However, the focus of the feedback leans heavily on the food and service aspects, which might imply a more functional or traditional setting rather than a highly emphasized ambiance. Customers primarily seem to be engaging with the restaurant for its food offerings, either through dine-in or takeout, and the reviews do not provide specific insights into the decor or atmosphere of the establishment itself. Therefore, local users might expect a straightforward and unpretentious dining environment at Mandarin House.

The service at Mandarin House is a point of positive mention in one of the reviews, which describes the "shop proprietors" as "quite nice." This suggests that customers can anticipate a friendly and welcoming interaction with the owners of the establishment. However, another review notes that "the service is not so well," indicating a potential inconsistency in the service experience. While the owners are perceived as pleasant, the overall service might vary. It is advisable for local users to be aware of this mixed feedback regarding service when considering Mandarin House.

The primary feature of Mandarin House, as with any restaurant, is its food. However, the customer reviews present a somewhat critical perspective on the culinary offerings. One reviewer described the food as "quite sad" and "below-average." Specifically, the Half Hainan Chicken was noted as "really bland," essentially described as boiled chicken with condiments. The Tomato Beef Chow Mein was also criticized, with the noodles being labeled as "overcooked, lifeless, and soggy." This feedback suggests that the execution of some dishes may not be up to par for some customers.

Another review echoed a similar sentiment, stating that "the food is ok" and "just average." While this reviewer did mention that "the portion is big," the overall quality of the food was not highlighted as a strong point. The consistency in describing the food as average or below-average suggests that this might be a key area for improvement at Mandarin House. Local users seeking high-quality or particularly flavorful Chinese cuisine might want to consider these reviews when making their dining choices.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Mandarin House in the provided reviews. There are no mentions of discounts, special offers, or signature dishes being promoted. The feedback is primarily focused on the quality of the food and the service. Therefore, local users should not expect any specific promotions based on this information. To inquire about any potential current specials or offerings, contacting the restaurant directly at (510) 549-1877 or +1 510-549-1877 would be the best course of action.

In conclusion, Mandarin House in Berkeley offers Chinese cuisine with proprietors who are considered nice and friendly by at least one reviewer. The portions are also noted as being large. However, the food itself has received feedback indicating it is average or below-average, with specific criticisms regarding the blandness of the Hainan Chicken and the poor texture of the Tomato Beef Chow Mein. While the service experience might be inconsistent, the friendliness of the owners is a potential positive aspect. Local users considering Mandarin House should weigh the positive comments about the proprietors and portion sizes against the concerns raised about the food quality. Without any specific promotional information, the decision to patronize Mandarin House might depend on individual priorities regarding service, quantity, and food quality.

Below-Average Food, Nice Proprietors I feel bad giving a two-star rating as the shop proprietors are quite nice. The food, on the other hand, is quite sad. Ordered the half Hainan Chicken and Tomato Beef Chow Mein. Chicken is really bland. It's pretty much boiled chicken with condiments over it. Noodles are overcooked, lifeless, and soggy. Hope they'll do better on future.

Absolutely terrible service. Waited about 40 minutes. The message said it was ready about 20 minutes in but I went to pick it up and had to wait another 20 minutes. No apology from the worker. The food itself was barely edible. BBQ pork was chewy and not flavorful. The rice seemed to be sprinkled with SOY SAUCE. All this for $15 is not worth it. Find something better to eat.

I went with two friends and we wanted to like it but were really disappointed. Portions match the price, but the food quality was just not it. I could tell that the fried rice was a day old at least, and the shrimp in it had the weird defrosted taste that smells and kind of transfers to anything it touches. My friend got noodles that tasted sweet (if you know the Asian bakery almond pastry, it tasted vaguely like that) and were really overcooked, and my other friend's rice was also a couple days old. We got the dim sum steamed buns, which were really good and tasted normal. Maybe it was just the day we went, but this was probably some of the worst quality food we've had, and we're not picky eaters at all.

Ordered the BBQ pork fried rice at the kiosk. Wait time was a bit long at around 20 minutes but the food itself was wonderful! Good flavor from the pork and the dish was steaming hot even after a 10 minute walk back to my dorm. Other members of my party who ordered separately also expressed their satisfaction of their food. Would go back!
