Based on customer reviews, experiences at Mala Kitchen are mixed. One customer enjoyed their meal, particularly the pork dumplings in hot chili oil and wanton soup, noting that the food was tasty and had the expected oiliness of authentic Chinese cuisine. However, another reviewer had a less positive experience, describing the food as "mid" and "almost tastes Americanized," deeming it not worth the price. They suggested that better options might be available elsewhere, including halal stands, especially for those seeking an authentic Chinese experience. This reviewer found the soup dumplings to be "super small," the stir-fried rice to be poor, and the kung pao chicken to be "way too sweet." They indicated that while it might be an acceptable place for a gathering, they would not recommend it to those familiar with authentic Chinese food.

For local users in New York, NY, Mala Kitchen offers Chinese cuisine with varying degrees of satisfaction reported by customers. Some dishes, like the pork dumplings and wanton soup, have been well-received, while others have been criticized for being Americanized, overpriced, and of poor quality, such as the soup dumplings, stir-fried rice, and kung pao chicken. We enjoyed our foods here. We came in just about 30 minutes before the kitchen closed but managed to get our foods and got out before the last customers. The foods were tasty, especially the pork dumplings in hot chili oil and wanton soup. The foods are a bit oily like you would expect from authentic Chinese cuisine. We washed our mouth with Tsingtao beer anyway so there is nothing to complain. We could tell that the server was a bit rush so she and the chefs could go home and that’s understandable. Although for other customers might not understand. Overall, we liked this restaurant

Mid Chinese food, almost tastes Americanized and not worth the money you pay. Could’ve had better at a halal stand honestly. If you’re Chinese or who had the authentic Chinese experience I won’t recommend but if you’re just looking for a place to eat for gathering then I guess this is a decent pick. Soup dumpling was also super small… stir fried rice sucked. Kung pao chicken was way too sweet.

My daughter took me here for dinner. We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, portions are big, very delicious, great customer service and one of them speak our dialect Hakka! Had a very enjoyable dining experience. Great midtown find, authentic Szechuan mala food. Highly recommended!

I was roaming the area and looking for a quick place to sit and eat when I stumbled upon this spot. Although it was empty, the food turned out to be amazing. However, the service left much to be desired. The employees and kitchen staff were loudly arguing back and forth, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere that made it hard to enjoy the meal. To add to the experience, we opted for bottled water because the tap water provided had something floating in the mug, which was unsettling. Despite the noise and the water issue, I still enjoyed the food and will likely give this restaurant another try.

We only ordered the wonton in chili oil and the dry pepper chicken just for a quick snack. NUMBER ONE RED FLAG FOR ANY ASIAN RESTAURANT: WE HAD TO PAY FOR STEAMED RICE!!! Super disappointing because when we looked specifically for Sichuan food, this was highly rated and we felt deceived as the dry pepper chicken had no Sichuan pepper at all. The fried chicken bits were super small and the plate was mostly dried cropped red chilis. The wontons in chili oil was so sad. The wontons did not taste fresh nor good and the “chili oil” was very vinegar-y? They also charged us an automatic 20% gratuity fee for subpar service. We’re so thankful we didn’t order other dishes, since we’d know we’d be disappointed. Overall, not sure how this restaurant has such high ratings, but if you want Sichuan or good food period, this is NOT the place. Super disappointed as an Asian.
