Excellent, clean, and comfortable place to get delicious Chinese food at reasonable prices and fast speed in a good neighborhood. It's more on the Americanized side than absolutely authentic, but the food they make is great. I'd definitely recommend the salt and pepper chicken, full of delicious flavor. They have really good pan fried noodles as well, if you're into it. The staff is friendly and tries to help you enjoy your food as best as possible, feel free to ask for recommendations.
The owners are sooooo nice!! We came after work (close to closing) but they were still really friendly and welcoming. The food is delicious, I love their twice cooked pork (although slightly different than what I expected but it’s really good!!) 🤤 We ordered 3 dishes for 3, but the portion could feed a village 😆 (jk we were just stuffed lol I also like how their food isn’t douse in salt, so it’s the perfect amount of savory to my personal liking Would recommend!!!! Can’t wait to come back again
We had the Mapo Tofu and Kung Pao Chicken for lunch. The lunch was very reasonably priced, and the dishes were refined and rich in flavor, showcasing the chef’s skill. The interior was bright, with simple yet elegant decor, creating a clean and pleasant atmosphere. I’ve only had crab puffs with hard shells before and never really liked them, but the crab puff here was freshly fried with a soft crust, and I found it delicious for the first time. I’d love to try other dishes as well.😊✨
A short while back, I called Ling Garden asking if I could upgrade my lunch special soup to wonton. I was told I could not but they would sell me wonton for $3 rather than $4.50 if I bought a lunch special. I went their yesterday ready to order a lunch so asked again reminding her that most Chinese restaurants allow off menu upgrades for a price just to make sure the price was still the same. I was told it would be the full $4.50 and different restaurants do things differently. Since there were other customers, I felt too embarrassed to haggle further over $1.50 so I just left. I sure do miss New York City Chinese restaurants where most usually do just about anything off menu for a reasonable price increase as well as usually considerably lower overall prices despite vastly higher operating costs than Portland. The few NYC transplant restaurants to Portland that were also like that seemed to disappear. After reading some of the one star reviews for Ling Garden when I went back home, I feel like I just dodged a bullet. The complaints are mostly about undercooked and bland tasting food, but there were a few food poisoning complaints and even one about being told "they were being too picky" for wanting to order what they always did after driving in from the western suburbs. Perhaps I should not act like a typical entitled transplant that expects businesses to make reasonable efforts to satisfy customers rather than adapt to the local culture of customers being obligated to make every mediocre or worse business feel as special as the hottest new nightclub in the world's most desirable cities. Ling Garden will take my loss as a win that preserves its cultural vibe and might even comment to discourage other would be customers with similar foreign customer service and product quality expectations from doing the same.
We love Ling Garden! By far the BEST Chinese food in Portland. Always such delicious food with fresh vegetables. Friendly staff too. Their Sesame Shrimp and Hot & Sour soup (comes with wonton pieces!) is to die for; way too good! So worth the drive in from the suburbs. Highly recommend if you’re looking for fresh and authentic Chinese cuisine. Been a loyal customer for many years.
