About 福林素食 Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro

福林素食 Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro, located at 3766 Piedmont Ave in Oakland, California, offers a unique and delightful dining experience specializing in vegetarian Chinese cuisine. This restaurant caters not only to vegetarians and vegans but also to anyone looking for flavorful and innovative dishes. Based on customer reviews, Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro has garnered praise for its delicious food, attentive service, and comfortable atmosphere.

While specific details about the indoor environment are not extensively described, one reviewer mentioned the availability of a "back patio" which is described as "very comfortable." This suggests that the restaurant offers an outdoor dining option, providing a relaxed and pleasant setting, especially during favorable weather. The mention of a comfortable back patio hints at an inviting ambiance that complements the dining experience.

The service at Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro appears to be a significant highlight. Customers have described the staff as "attentive and very kind," indicating a welcoming and helpful approach. Furthermore, the staff is noted to be "flexible and super knowledgeable of the menu." This suggests that they are well-equipped to answer questions about ingredients, preparation methods, and dietary accommodations, particularly important for vegetarian and vegan diners. The attentiveness and knowledge of the staff contribute to a positive and reassuring dining experience.

A standout feature of Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro is its creative and flavorful vegetarian interpretations of classic Chinese dishes. One reviewer, who is not vegetarian, was "thoroughly impressed" with the food, noting that all the dishes had "depth of flavor and were distinctly different." This indicates that the restaurant goes beyond simple substitutions, creating well-crafted and satisfying meals that appeal to a wide range of palates.

One dish that received particular praise was the green beans. Traditionally made with minced pork, Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro offers a unique twist by incorporating jalapeños. This adaptation was described as "sooo good and honestly better this way," highlighting the restaurant's ability to innovate and enhance familiar flavors with vegetarian alternatives. The positive feedback from a non-vegetarian diner underscores the appeal of their culinary creations.

Another highly recommended dish is the Veggie Crispy Noodles, which was a favorite among a group of friends dining family-style. This suggests that the dish is well-executed and enjoyable for sharing. The group also ordered Hot and Sour Soup and Laughing Buddha Delight, both of which were well-received, with the reviewer specifically liking the soup. However, a note of caution was raised for vegan diners regarding the Hot and Sour Soup, as many traditional versions include egg flower or egg white broth. The reviewer advised vegans to inquire about the ingredients to ensure it meets their dietary needs.

The family-style service mentioned in one review indicates that Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro is a great place for group gatherings, allowing diners to sample a variety of dishes. This communal dining style enhances the social aspect of the meal and provides an opportunity to experience the breadth of the menu.

One minor suggestion from a reviewer was for a more even ratio of noodles to vegetables in the Veggie Crispy Noodles, indicating that while the vegetables were plentiful, a greater quantity of noodles would have been preferred. This feedback is valuable for the restaurant to consider in refining their dish proportions.

The beverage offerings also received positive comments, with the "longevity tea" being specifically mentioned and loved by a customer. Additionally, the "cups of tea are HUGE," suggesting generous portions and good value for this beverage.

In summary, 福林素食 Laughing Buddha Vegetarian Bistro offers a compelling vegetarian Chinese dining experience in Oakland. Its features include a comfortable back patio for outdoor seating, attentive and knowledgeable staff, and a menu of flavorful and innovative vegetarian dishes that have impressed both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diners. Standout dishes include the green beans with jalapeños and the Veggie Crispy Noodles. The restaurant is also well-suited for family-style dining and offers generously sized tea portions.

I personally am not vegetarian, but came here with a Vegan friend so we could eat out together. We were both thoroughly impressed. I eat a lot of Chinese food and I really enjoyed all of the dishes. They all had depth of flavor and were distinctly different. I was especially happy with the green beans - this dish traditionally is made with minced pork but instead it’s got a bit of a twist with jalapeños. Sooo good and honestly better this way. Also loved the longevity tea. My vegan friend was really happy with the meal and said he’d be back for sure. The staff was attentive and very kind. Flexible and super knowledgeable of the menu.

Went with some friends so I got to try a bunch of things since it was served family style. We had a good time, liked everything, but our favorite dish was definitely the Veggie Crispy Noodles. The rest of our order was Hot and Sour Soup and Laughing Buddha Delight. I really liked the soup and if you’re vegan be sure to see if egg is included or not since many of the soups have egg flower broth or egg white broth. I do wish that there was a more even ratio of noodles to veggies. All of us had plenty of vegetables but would have liked more noodles. The cups of tea are HUGE. Sitting in the back patio is very comfortable

I get it's really difficult to work late on a Sunday night. However I still expect a business to do what they say and say what they mean. We walked in at 8:30pm because they said they close at 9. They informed us they were take-out only at this point. We ordered the "Triple Mushroom Saute" and the "Curry Veggies & Gluten". The mushroom dish did not have enoki as the menu says, it had the more common cremini. I thought "Gluten" meant it would include Seitan, but apparently not. Yes I should have asked. All it had was about 3 pieces of tofu skin. But the quality of the ingredients was excellent, everything was cooked fresh, and the flavor was excellent. The atmosphere looked nice from a quick glance, though the place was colder then outdoor temperature.

The server was incredibly sweet and thoughtful and offered some of the best service I've had in awhile, but the food was ok to good. My daughters enjoyed themselves because they never go out. I liked the tofu wonton, and the udon noodles had a nice texture, but I don't recommend the sweet and sour lychee and seitan.

This place is the absolute best of Oakland! The food is delicious and the service is impeccable. The prices are affordable and the menu is extremely extensive. They decorated the place in a very tasteful fashion that is intentional and modest. We will be coming back here very often and hope to see this place get really popular. They did an amazing job.
