About Laka
Located at 447 Broadway in Millbrae, Laka operates within the Chinese Restaurant category and offers a selection of dishes that appear to lean towards Cantonese style, based on the menu items mentioned in customer reviews. Feedback from patrons presents a somewhat varied perspective, with some dishes receiving positive mentions while others are considered average in terms of both taste and value.
One reviewer provided a succinct summary, stating that Laka offers "some decent food but mostly average food/price." This initial assessment sets the tone for a more detailed exploration of the customer experiences. The reviewer described trying a meal that included lotus-wrapped rice with chicken (noting it was "pretty small"), plain congee (porridge), and a drink, all for $12. The reviewer felt this price was "pretty expensive for what it is, especially with plain congee," suggesting a perception of low value for this particular combination.
Further elaborating on their experience, the same reviewer ordered an $18 three-item plate. While they acknowledged that the value of this plate was "decent" due to the quantity of food, the quality of the individual items varied. The char-siu (barbecue pork) was described as "very lean and no fat at all," which might be a preference for some but a drawback for those who enjoy the richness that fat imparts to char-siu. The chicken was rated as "average," indicating it was neither particularly impressive nor disappointing. The standout item on the plate for this reviewer was the roast pork, which they favored for its "very crispy skin." The milk tea was also deemed "average," falling between great and amazing.
In contrast to this mixed experience, another reviewer expressed a more positive sentiment, mentioning that they "like to come on weekdays with family" when the restaurant is "not as packed" and the "food always good." This suggests that the consistency and quality of food might be better during less busy times. A specific dish highlighted by this reviewer is the fish porridge, which their toddler enjoys and is considered "pretty fresh." This indicates that Laka offers options suitable for families and caters to different age groups. The reviewer also mentioned liking Laka's "breakfast combos," suggesting a potentially appealing morning menu. Additionally, their wife enjoys the "sticky rice," indicating another popular dish at the restaurant.
Considering the environment of Laka, the provided reviews do not offer specific details about the décor or ambiance. However, the mention of it being less packed on weekdays suggests a casual setting that can get busy during peak times. The fact that families frequent the restaurant implies a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for a diverse clientele.
The services at Laka appear to be efficient enough, as the food was served in a reasonable timeframe according to one reviewer ("The first meal comes with..."). The friendly or attentiveness of the staff is not explicitly mentioned, but the repeat weekday visits by one customer with family suggest that the service is likely adequate and accommodating.
A notable feature of Laka seems to be its variety of offerings, including set meals, multi-item plates, individual dishes like porridge and noodles, and potentially breakfast combos and sticky rice. The fish porridge stands out as a popular and fresh option, particularly for children. The three-item plate allows customers to sample different roasted meats, with the roast pork receiving positive feedback for its crispy skin. The lotus-wrapped rice with chicken is another unique offering, although one reviewer found the portion small for the price.
Promotional information is not explicitly mentioned in the provided customer reviews. It is possible that Laka might offer daily specials or other promotions that are not captured in this feedback. Local users interested in any potential special offers are advised to contact the restaurant directly at (650) 651-7105 or via their mobile number at +1 650-651-7105 to inquire.
In conclusion, Laka in Millbrae presents a mixed bag of experiences according to the available customer reviews. While some dishes, like the roast pork and fish porridge, receive positive mentions, others, such as the lotus-wrapped rice meal and the milk tea, are considered average or overpriced. The weekday experience seems to be more consistently positive, with less crowding and reliably good food, including breakfast combos and sticky rice. The three-item plate offers decent value in terms of quantity but varied quality in the individual components, with the lean char-siu being a point of contention. For local users in Millbrae, Laka might be worth trying, especially on a weekday to avoid crowds and sample their praised items like the fish porridge and potentially their breakfast offerings. However, it's advisable to be mindful of potential inconsistencies in portion sizes and the quality of certain dishes based on the available feedback.

TLDR: some decent food but mostly average food/price We had a few different dishes. The first meal comes with a lotus wrapped rice with chicken (pretty small), plain congee (porridge) and a drink for $12 which is pretty expensive for what it is, especially with plain congee. I ordered the $18 three item plate and though the value is decent, the char-siu was very lean and no fat at all, the chicken was average but the roast pork was my favorite with very crispy skin Milk tea was also average, not great but not amazing
I like to come on weekdays with family not as packed food always good. Fish porridge is my toddlers favorite here and is pretty fresh. I like their breakfast combos . The wife like the sticky rice.
5/5 on everything. And it's so affordable. The roasted duck is excellent (get a side of rice), very fatty and juicy. The noodle soups are great - I especially like the hot and sour noodles. The congee is also on point. It's become one of our favorites!!
Got the signature deep fried fish stew - pretty spicy on a bed of sliced lotus root, potatoes, bean sprouts. It looked better than it tasted IMO, too vinegary to my taste clashing with the spiciness. I don't think the fish was cooked through fully - some parts around the head and neck were goop-y. The side dishes were small - cold cut chicken was good, cucumbers average. Service was a bit absent, didn't refill the tea often enough. Plenty of seats inside.
We came for breakfast on a Saturday. There's was about a 10-15 minute wait at noon. We had the combos. Set D is the mini chow fun with a milk congee; Set I is the boat congee with a Chinese donut and a small dish of fried squid $10. I would recommend not get the milk congee if you never had it before. As for the set D, there are better places for congee. The outstanding dish was the small fried squid. It had this mild spicy powder that made it work. Service was slow but the kitchen was fast.
