About King Kong Chinese Restaurant
Located at 2966 Castro Valley Blvd in Castro Valley, CA, King Kong Chinese Restaurant positions itself within the Chinese Restaurant category, offering a range of Cantonese-style dishes. Based on customer reviews, it's important for local users to understand the distinct nature of this establishment, particularly regarding its approach to food preparation and service.
One customer described King Kong Chinese Restaurant as a place to find "very authentic" Chinese food, specifically Cantonese style. They highlighted several dishes, including the Papaya Short Ribs, Lemon Chicken, Vegetable Chow Mein, and Veggie Egg Rolls, all deemed "delicious." Additionally, they mentioned the availability of "duck to go," which they also found to be of good quality. This reviewer emphasized that King Kong Chinese Restaurant is not a typical "fast Chinese food" establishment often seen with pre-prepared dishes in the window, suggesting a focus on more traditional and potentially slower-cooked methods.
However, not all customer experiences have been equally positive. One reviewer recounted an issue with their order of "fish flavor pork" (鱼香肉丝). Initially, they were reportedly denied a substitution of white rice for the included fried rice without an extra charge. Subsequently, the dish they received was identified as eggplant, leading to it being sent back. The replacement dish was then heavily criticized by this reviewer, who claimed to have lived in China for ten years and asserted that it was not authentic "fish flavor pork" but rather a "vegetable stir fry with brown sauce." This customer went as far as to suggest that more authentic and cheaper Chinese food could be found at a fast-food chain like Panda Express.
This stark contrast in reviews presents a somewhat mixed picture for potential local diners. On one hand, there is praise for the authenticity and deliciousness of certain Cantonese dishes like the papaya short ribs and lemon chicken. On the other hand, there are serious concerns raised about the authenticity and accuracy of other dishes, specifically the "fish flavor pork," and the inflexibility regarding rice substitutions. These conflicting experiences suggest a potential variability in the quality or authenticity of different items on the menu, or perhaps a difference in expectations between customers.
Regarding the environment and services, the provided reviews offer limited direct information. One reviewer referred to King Kong Chinese Restaurant as a "whole in in the Wall Chinese food place," which often implies a more casual and unassuming setting, possibly prioritizing food quality over elaborate decor. The mention of "duck to go" indicates that takeout service is available, catering to customers who prefer to enjoy their meals off-site. The interaction experienced by the customer who ordered the "fish flavor pork" suggests that the chef may also be involved in taking orders, which could be seen as a more direct and potentially personal level of service, though in this case, it led to a negative outcome due to the rice substitution issue and the subsequent misidentification of the dish.
Based on the available information, it is difficult to definitively assess the overall environment and typical service at King Kong Chinese Restaurant. The positive reviewer focused primarily on the food quality and authenticity of certain dishes, while the negative reviewer concentrated on issues with order accuracy, menu flexibility, and the perceived lack of authenticity of a specific dish.
For local users in Castro Valley considering dining at King Kong Chinese Restaurant, it would be prudent to weigh these contrasting experiences. If you are specifically seeking authentic Cantonese-style dishes and are willing to potentially explore beyond the more common American-Chinese fare, the positive review suggests that you might find some excellent options, such as the papaya short ribs and lemon chicken. However, the negative review serves as a cautionary tale, particularly if you have specific expectations regarding certain dishes or have a strong familiarity with authentic Chinese cuisine. The issue with the rice substitution also highlights a potential lack of flexibility in their service approach.
There is no promotional information available in the provided reviews. Local users interested in any current specials or promotions at King Kong Chinese Restaurant would need to contact the restaurant directly via phone at (510) 728-1888 or +1 510-728-1888.
In conclusion, King Kong Chinese Restaurant in Castro Valley appears to be a somewhat polarizing establishment based on the limited reviews. While one customer praised its authentic Cantonese food and highlighted several delicious dishes, another had a significantly negative experience regarding order accuracy, perceived lack of authenticity of a specific dish, and inflexible service. For local users, deciding whether to try King Kong Chinese Restaurant might depend on their specific preferences for Cantonese cuisine and their tolerance for potential inconsistencies in menu items and service. It may be advisable to inquire about specific dishes before ordering, especially if you have prior experience with authentic Chinese cuisine.

Papaya short ribs, lemon chicken, vegetable chow mein, veggie egg rolls. Also, duck to go which is not shown in the pictures. All delicious food very authentic if you're looking for that. This is not a place you come to if you're hoping for fast Chinese food you see in the window. Very authentic Cantonese style Chinese food. This is my new favorite whole in in the Wall Chinese food place.
I ordered fish flavor pork. First the chef (who also took my order) refused to give me white rice instead of fried rice. (Fried rice costs an extra $1.50). Then when the food came out it was eggplant. Had to send it back and this is what I got. I lived in China for ten years. This is NOT fish flavor pork (鱼香肉丝). No Chinese person would accept this. This is vegetable stir fry with brown sauce. You'd get more authentic Chinese food at Panda Express. And it's cheaper too.
Homely, awesome skilled chef, perfect food. Definitely coming back.
This is our go to Chinese take out! The roasted duck, and many other dishes are delicious. Not a fancy place inside but the food is delicious!
Ate early lunch here [1039am], they supposedly opened at 1030am. Sat for about 5-minutes with a menu I got for myself. I was about to leave when a lady [finally] came out and greeted me. Starting to be a bit apprehensive, from all the negative reviews. Ordered their vegetarian egg rolls/6.45 and won ton noodle soup/11.95. Soup was good, egg rolls were awful-no taste. Thankfully, I also asked for chilli-paste, which made the egg rolls at least palatable. Soup had the skinny-noodles but most were broken/strange. The won tons were scarce/about 5 of them. Soup had some carrot pieces and chinese flat beans. The broth was way better than the won tons and noodles. Not exactly what I expected, I probably won't return because there are better chinese restaurants in CV.
