About King Chef
Welcome to King Chef, a Chinese restaurant located at 112 W Hamlet St in Pinetops, North Carolina (NC 27864), USA. As the only Chinese restaurant in Pinetops, King Chef serves as the primary option for local residents seeking Chinese cuisine. You can contact them at (252) 827-1388 or their mobile number +1 252-827-1388 for inquiries or to place an order.
Based on the available customer reviews, the environment and service setup of King Chef appear to be unconventional and potentially off-putting for some customers. One reviewer described the establishment as a "closed off restaurant" where customers walk up to a window (with the entrance boarded up) to place their order by speaking into a speaker. They then have to wait outside, even in inclement weather such as rain and cold, for their order to be prepared and delivered through the same window. This unique service model, where there is no traditional indoor dining area or even a standard takeout counter, is a significant feature of King Chef and something that potential customers should be aware of before visiting. This setup might be convenient for quick pickups but could be uncomfortable during adverse weather conditions or for those who prefer a more traditional restaurant experience.
The services offered by King Chef seem to be primarily focused on takeout, given the described ordering and pickup process. While the reviews do not explicitly mention delivery, it is possible that this service is also available. However, the emphasis on ordering and receiving food through a window suggests that takeout is the main mode of service. One review also highlighted a specific payment policy: "cash only under five dollars." This is another crucial piece of information for potential customers, as it means that for small orders, they will need to have cash on hand. This policy caused significant frustration for one reviewer who was not informed of it until they tried to pay with a debit card for a $4.71 order.
The customer feedback regarding the food and overall experience at King Chef is overwhelmingly negative, raising serious concerns about the restaurant's offerings. One reviewer recounted a pricing issue, stating that their usual meal, which they had never paid more than $14 for at any other Chinese restaurant, was priced at over $21 at King Chef. They were only "saved from being over charged" because the restaurant did not accept tap-to-pay, which was the only payment method they had at the time. This incident suggests potential issues with pricing transparency or unexpectedly high costs for standard menu items.
The second, more detailed review paints an even more unfavorable picture of King Chef. The customer, who rarely leaves negative reviews, expressed "huge disappointment" with their experience. They noted that despite researching the menu online and intending to order a complete meal, "over half of the menu was unavailable" upon their visit. This severely limited the options and led to frustration. Ultimately, they ordered a shrimp roll and a beef roll as the only available items they were interested in. The food itself was described as "bland, tough, over cooked and lacked alot of filling." This indicates significant problems with the quality and preparation of at least these two menu items.
Adding to the negative experience, the same reviewer described the interaction with the staff as "rather unfriendly." This aspect of customer service, combined with the unusual ordering and pickup process and the poor food quality, contributed to a highly unsatisfactory experience. The reviewer explicitly stated having "NO INTENTION whatsoever of returning," which strongly suggests a very negative impression of King Chef.
Considering that King Chef is the only Chinese restaurant in Pinetops, local residents might feel they have limited options. However, the overwhelmingly negative feedback regarding pricing, menu availability, service setup, food quality, and customer service should give potential customers significant pause. The unusual ordering process alone, requiring customers to wait outside in all weather conditions, is a major drawback. Coupled with reports of unexpectedly high prices, a severely limited menu, poorly prepared and bland food, and unfriendly service, the overall picture of King Chef is far from appealing.
Given the strong negative reviews, it would be prudent for local users to consider alternatives outside of Pinetops if possible, or to have very low expectations if they choose to try King Chef. If one does decide to order from King Chef, it would be wise to inquire about the availability of menu items beforehand, confirm the pricing, and be prepared to pay in cash for orders under $5. Additionally, given the report of poor food quality, it might be advisable to start with a small order to assess the standard before committing to a larger meal.
The provided information does not include any details about specific features of King Chef, such as signature dishes or unique culinary styles, likely due to the overwhelmingly negative focus of the reviews on basic aspects like service and food quality. Similarly, there is no mention of any promotional offers or discounts. Given the reported issues, any potential promotions would likely be secondary to concerns about the overall experience. Local users would need to contact King Chef directly for any information regarding their full menu, any unique offerings, and whether they currently have any special deals.
In conclusion, King Chef in Pinetops, NC, the town's only Chinese restaurant, has received extremely negative feedback regarding its unusual service setup, potentially high pricing, severely limited menu, poor food quality (bland, tough, overcooked egg rolls with little filling), and unfriendly customer service. Local users should be aware of these significant drawbacks before considering ordering from or visiting King Chef. The unconventional ordering and pickup process, coupled with concerns about the food and service, suggests that this might not be a satisfying option for those seeking Chinese cuisine.

Orderd my usual meal gen tso combo rice extra onions and egg fried in rice. I have never paid more then $14 for the meal at any chinese place i order from the total came up to $21 and sum change fortunately for me they don't accept tap to pay and that's all I had. So I was saved from being over charged. For a meal I have never paid over $14 for.
I RARELY do negative reviews... (check my page)... but unfortunately this place was a huge disappointment. Found myself wanting to try out a new restaurant in a new town. This is the only Chinese Restaurant in this town (FYI) I intended to order a complete meal, (researched the menu online) however over half of the menu was unavailable... I was hungry and frustrated at this point with such limited offerings, so I ordered a shrimp roll and a beef roll and called it a day, atleast it was something even though the three dishes I requested were all "unavailable" at that time... not what I was expecting as the entire set up is a closed off restaurant, you walk up to a window (the entrance is boarded up) you speak into a speaker what you'd like to order, then you stand outside the restaurant in the rain and cold waiting for your order (knowing this establishment was set up in this manner would have been helpful prior to visiting) so I wait maybe 7-8 minutes for my two egg rolls (beef, shrimp) it comes to a total of $4.71. I pull out my debit card, the (rather unfriendly) woman behind the plexiglass and door yells through the speaker.. "cash only under five dollars" at this point I'm DONE!! I said forget it! I go to put my card back in my wallet and she says "okay... okay... put in card" I slide my card into the tiny slit in the plexiglass screen where she moves the machine and I wait.... she drops a paper in a box and slides it forward... I pick up my receipt thinking that's all, she yells "sign" at this point it's taking all I have in me to maintain my composure... she slides the box back out with a pen... I drop my receipt and pen in the box and she slides it back inside... "any sauce?" Me.."yes, hot sauce, soy and duck sauce please" (I have 2 rolls) I get one pack of each.... drops my food in the box and slides it back out through the boarded up door... the rolls were bland, tough, over cooked and lacked alot of filling. LESSON LEARNED....have NO INTENTION whatsoever of returning!
Not too bad but not great either. Typical chinese take out, food was subpar and too expensive for what it was. Wait time was about 15 minutes or less.
Sadly, Very disappointing. Dining room has been closed since COVID… Simply “Carry-out” now. Call-in or “Walk-up” service only. Employees are not friendly, and the food is often a poor version of a Chinese eatery. 👎🏻
Since covid19 you're not allowed in the restaurant. You either have to call in the order or wait at the restaurant door for someone to take your order. The food is good, but I've had better in Wilson and Nashville. The other restaurants will at least let you in out of the cold to order your food
