About Kin Wah Chop Suey
Located at 45-588 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, HI 96744, USA, Kin Wah Chop Suey stands as a notable Chinese restaurant that offers a distinct flavor of local Hawaiian Chinese cuisine. For those looking to experience a specific type of Chinese food deeply rooted in Hawaii's cultural landscape, this establishment provides a unique opportunity. You can reach them by phone at (808) 247-4812 or via mobile at +1 808-247-4812.
Kin Wah Chop Suey is described by some patrons as one of the last remaining strongholds of "70s/80s Hawaii vibes" local restaurants. This suggests an environment that might not be characterized by modern, sleek décor but rather by a sense of nostalgia and a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Imagine a place where the focus is less on contemporary design and more on a comfortable, familiar setting that has served the community for decades. This kind of ambiance often appeals to those seeking an authentic, no-frills dining experience that harks back to a simpler time. It's the kind of place where locals feel at home, and visitors can get a true taste of a bygone era in Hawaiian dining.
As a Chinese restaurant, Kin Wah Chop Suey provides a range of classic Chinese dishes, tailored to what is known as "Hawaii local Chinese food." This distinction is important, as it implies a culinary style that, while recognizable, possesses subtle differences that set it apart from traditional Chinese cuisine found elsewhere in the world. The restaurant likely offers standard services expected of a casual dining establishment, including dine-in options and potentially takeout, given its local appeal. The emphasis here is on consistent, solid food that is deeply integrated into the local food culture, rather than a constantly evolving menu or gourmet presentations.
The defining feature of Kin Wah Chop Suey’s cuisine is its representation of a specific genre of Chinese food unique to local Hawaii. While dishes like Kung Pao chicken, chicken and broccoli with brown sauce, honey garlic chicken, and fried rice are on the menu, they are prepared in a way that is distinctly Hawaiian. This isn't necessarily about gourmet quality, but rather about a particular taste and preparation style that resonates with the local palate and culinary history. It's a type of comfort food for many in the area, offering a consistent and familiar flavor profile that has been enjoyed for generations. The uniqueness lies in these subtle, hard-to-describe differences that differentiate it from Chinese food found on the mainland or in other international locations.
Customer reviews offer a varied perspective on Kin Wah Chop Suey. One customer expressed significant disappointment, citing notably poor food quality, with dishes like chicken and broccoli with brown sauce tasting old, and Kung Pao chicken being poorly prepared and not resembling a traditional version. The honey garlic chicken was also deemed below average, and the fried rice underwhelming. This perspective suggests that the restaurant might not appeal to those seeking a high-quality, authentic rendition of classic Chinese dishes as understood outside of the unique "local Hawaii" context.
Conversely, another review highlights the restaurant's significance within Hawaii's local cuisine culture. This reviewer emphasizes that the food is consistently solid and that the prices remain good, even in 2025. This perspective underscores that the value of Kin Wah Chop Suey lies not necessarily in its adherence to universal standards of Chinese cuisine quality, but in its integral role in preserving a particular aspect of Hawaii's evolving food scene. For this segment of the clientele, the restaurant represents a piece of local history and a taste of home that is increasingly rare.
From a promotional standpoint, Kin Wah Chop Suey's enduring appeal lies in its position as a cultural landmark. It offers a nostalgic journey back to a specific era of Hawaiian dining, providing consistent and affordable meals that are deeply embedded in the local community's culinary identity. Its continued operation, even in changing times, is a testament to its unique place in the hearts of many residents. While it may not cater to every palate, particularly those accustomed to a different style of Chinese cuisine, it offers a genuine experience of "Hawaii local Chinese food" that is becoming increasingly scarce.
Therefore, for local users, Kin Wah Chop Suey can be promoted as a place to experience authentic "Hawaii local Chinese food," characterized by its consistent flavors and connection to the islands' culinary heritage. It’s a restaurant that prioritizes affordability and a sense of community, making it a valuable part of the local dining landscape. It's not just a place to eat; it's a place to connect with Hawaii's unique culinary past and present.

I was very disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. This was the first Chinese restaurant I’ve visited where the food quality was notably poor. The chicken and broccoli with brown sauce tasted old and unappealing, and the Kung Pao chicken was not only poorly prepared but also bore little resemblance to a traditional Kung Pao dish. The honey garlic chicken was below average, and the fried rice was equally underwhelming. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant based on my experience. FYI, the photo below is supposed to be kung pao chicken, never have I seen Kung Pao Chicken look like this..
One of the last few remaining strongholds of 70s/80s Hawaii vibes local restaurants. Prices still good even in 2025, food as solid and consistent as always. This is a type of Chinese food specific to local Hawaii that I don't think you can get anywhere else in the world. The dishes are available elsewhere but would be slightly different in a hard to describe way. This is food that should be known not necessarily for its quality, but for its place in Hawaii's local cuisine culture which is changing, and we soon won't have any places like this left.
I was in Hawaii for 30 days and I must have ate here nearly twice a week. I really wish I discovered this place earlier. I am from the Bay area, so I live near Oakland and SF Chinatown. The food here at Kin Wah is far superior than anything I can get back at home. I know it sounds crazy, but Chinese food hasn't been the same for the last 10 years plus here in the Bay area. The Chow Fun at Kin Wah reminds me of my childhood. Hands down the best Chinese food I've had in a while. Top picks: Beef Chow Fun with black bean sauce Dry style, Won ton with Chili Green Onion and Ginger sauce and Peking duck with buns. Prices are very reasonable (especially when you compare to Bay area prices). The Owners and workers are all very nice. I wanted to give a shout out to Lisa and Jay, thank you for creating a great dining experience for me. I will be back next year.
Absolutely the best Chinese restaurant on the island. Food was delicious and hit the spot. Servers are super friendly and funny. I got the roast duck noodle soup, sooooo good highly recommend.
Excellent old school Cantonese food. Clean and friendly workers. Portions are large. You will not leave here hungry. The place has been here like forever! My go to place for Chinese food on the windward side of Oahu. Recommend.
