About Keng's Chow Mein

Keng's Chow Mein, located at 6121 N 42nd Ave in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a Chinese restaurant that has been serving the local community for over 30 years. While the name emphasizes their chow mein, they offer a variety of classic Americanized Chinese dishes, primarily catering to takeout and delivery orders. You can reach them by phone at (763) 537-3003 or via their mobile number +1 763-537-3003 for inquiries or to place an order.

Based on recent online reviews, Keng's Chow Mein is appreciated for the quality and flavor of its food, particularly its namesake dish. One customer who placed a delivery order reported that the food was good overall. They found the appetizer tray to be decent, specifically recommending the chicken wings. The wonton soup was praised for including vegetables and pork, along with a flavorful broth and great dumplings. The classic chicken chow mein was described as a solid comfort dish, and the Singapore chow mein with shrimp was also well-received. This reviewer even customized their Singapore chow mein by mixing the vegetables, shrimp, and sauce with the noodles to create a lo mein-style meal, adding soy sauce for extra flavor, and found it satisfying as a classic Americanized Chinese meal that didn't skimp on quality or flavor.

Another long-time patron, who has been a customer for over 30 years, strongly recommends trying their chow mein, even for those who don't typically enjoy it. They suggest that the fried rice, while bland on its own, tastes great when mixed with the chow mein. Other items like the egg rolls and chicken wings are also noted as being good. This reviewer emphasizes that while dine-in is technically an option and they have seen people do it, Keng's Chow Mein is primarily a takeout establishment, and dine-in customers should not expect service. Even for pickup orders, they caution that there might be a wait at the desk, sometimes exceeding ten minutes, as the staff may not be immediately attentive. They liken the service to the "soup guy from Seinfeld," implying a somewhat indifferent attitude towards customer service beyond fulfilling the food order. This reviewer advises buying the larger containers, suggesting that the food is enjoyable enough to warrant leftovers.

Considering these reviews, the standout feature of Keng's Chow Mein is undoubtedly their chow mein, which comes highly recommended even by those who are not typically fans of the dish. The combination of the chow mein with the seemingly bland fried rice is also suggested as a winning pairing. Other menu items like the chicken wings, egg rolls, and wonton soup have also received positive mentions for their quality and flavor. The Singapore chow mein with shrimp is another recommended option, offering a different flavor profile.

The environment of Keng's Chow Mein is described as primarily geared towards takeout. While a dine-in option exists, it is not encouraged, and customers choosing to eat at the restaurant should not expect table service. Even for takeout orders, the service at the counter might be slow or inattentive. This suggests that the focus of the establishment is squarely on food preparation for off-site consumption rather than providing a traditional restaurant dining experience. The "hole-in-the-wall" feel, implied by the lack of emphasis on dine-in service, often indicates a long-standing establishment prioritizing its food over ambiance.

The services offered by Keng's Chow Mein mainly include takeout and delivery, as indicated by one of the reviews being specifically for a delivery order. The availability of phone ordering facilitates easy takeout and delivery. While dine-in is possible, the lack of expected service makes it less of a primary offering. The long wait times at the counter for pickup suggest that efficiency in customer interaction for takeout might not be a strong point. However, the quality of the food seems to compensate for any shortcomings in service for many customers.

Features of Keng's Chow Mein include its longevity in the community (over 30 years), which often speaks to a consistent quality in their core offerings. Their signature dish, the chow mein, is a unique feature that sets them apart and is highly recommended. The inclusion of vegetables and pork in the wonton soup is another notable detail appreciated by customers. The availability of a variety of classic Americanized Chinese dishes, such as fried rice, egg rolls, and different types of chow mein, provides a range of options for customers seeking familiar flavors.

Promotional information is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews. It is possible that Keng's Chow Mein may have occasional specials or offers, but these are not detailed in the feedback. Local users interested in any promotions or special deals should consider contacting the restaurant directly by phone or checking if they have any online presence, such as a website or social media page, where such information might be posted. Given their long-standing presence, they might have regular customers who are aware of any recurring specials.

In conclusion, Keng's Chow Mein in Minneapolis, MN, is a long-established Chinese restaurant primarily focused on takeout and delivery. Their signature dish, the chow mein, comes highly recommended, even for those who are not typically fans. While other menu items like the chicken wings, egg rolls, and wonton soup are also well-received, the fried rice is best enjoyed mixed with the chow mein. The dine-in option is discouraged, and even takeout customers might experience slow or inattentive service at the counter. The environment is functional for food preparation and takeout rather than a comfortable dining space. Local users prioritizing good quality, classic Americanized Chinese food for takeout or delivery, especially the highly recommended chow mein, may find Keng's Chow Mein to be a worthwhile option, keeping in mind the potential for less-than-stellar customer service and a focus on off-site dining. Information on any current promotions would need to be obtained directly from the restaurant.

This is for a delivery order. Food was good! The appetizer tray isn’t bad, I’d pick just the chicken wings out of the mix though to get again. The wonton soup has veggies and pork added which is a nice touch, the broth is flavorful and the dumplings are great. The chicken chow mein is a solid classic comfort dish and the Singapore chow mein with shrimp was good. I mixed the veggies and shrimp and sauce with the noodles to have a lo mein type meal of it and added soy sauce for flavoring. It all hit the spot for a classic Americanized Chinese meal without skimping on quality/flavor

I've been going here 30 plus years. Not many restaurants survive 30 years. A few things you should know about this place: It's called "Keng's Chow Mein", which means you should get the Chow Mein. I don't generally like Chow Mein, maybe you don't like Chow Mein either, but you should still get the Chow Mein. The fried rice is bland, but that's okay, it tastes great mixed with the Chow Mein. Egg rolls are good, chicken wings are good, but again get the Chow Mein and then experiment with the rest of the menu. It says that you can dine in, and I have seen people do that, but it's frowned upon. This is a take out place. If you insist on eating there don't expect service. Even if you pick up the food, don't expect service. More than once I've stood there for ten minutes plus waiting for someone to come to the desk. They don't care, they will get to you when they get to you. Think the soup guy from Seinfeld. Buy the big containers, you're gonna want leftovers.

They make exceptional food! As an Asian/chinese food lover- I’m used to getting reheated frozen foods (which is usually still decent). This was definitely not that! I could tell that they actually made my fried rice from white rice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The pan fried noodles were also delicious!

I stopped for a to go order and it was amazing! I ordered chicken chow mein meal and it was like the good ole Keng's! My family has been going there for years and last night meal was very good. They only reason I gave the food 4 stars is because I wish they would still serve the shredded chicken wrapped in wax paper for the chow mein!
