About Kaojiu Restaurant

Kaojiu Restaurant, located at 406 Harvard St in Brookline, MA, offers a unique Chinese dining experience. They can be contacted at (617) 487-8440 or +1 617-487-8440.

The restaurant is described as beautiful, with a thoughtful atmosphere. The decor includes paintings of the Dunhuang caves, and the menus are presented as scrolls. The staff are consistently mentioned as attentive and friendly. A notable feature is their whisky cocktail, which includes a stone lion ice sculpture, highlighting the attention to detail.

Kaojiu's menu features a variety of dishes, including the popular lamb backbone hot pot, with a small size being suitable for three people when accompanied by grilled sides. Their drinks are creatively named, although some reviewers found them to be generally weak, which might be intentional for their clientele. The staff are knowledgeable about the menu, able to clearly explain dishes and offer recommendations.

For adventurous eaters, Kaojiu offers unique skewers such as the "lamb treasure," described as crunchy, well-seasoned, and surprisingly good. The reviewer suggests that those familiar with Chinese euphemisms might be able to guess the specific cut of lamb. They also serve other less common items like aorta and chicken cartilage, all beautifully seasoned and enjoyable to eat.

While one reviewer who tried the lamb ribs, lamb skewers, and beef skewers found them not spicy despite requesting a spicier preparation and noted the chives were a bit salty, they also observed another table enjoying the lamb rib hot pot, which looked very appealing, suggesting they would return to try it.

Overall, Kaojiu Restaurant provides a visually appealing environment with attentive service and a diverse menu featuring both familiar and more experimental Chinese dishes. The lamb backbone hot pot and unique skewers are highlighted as items to try. While the cocktails might be on the weaker side for some, the thoughtful presentation and friendly staff contribute to a positive dining experience.

Beautiful restaurant with attentive and friendly staff and great food. Decor and menu details are thoughtfully done, with paintings of the dunhuang caves as the backdrop. Menus are scrolls. Their whisky cocktail has a stone Lion ice sculpture in it! Very thoughtful atmosphere. We ordered the lamb backbone hot pot and small was the right size for 3 along with grilled sides. Drinks are creatively named, but generally weak, which probably makes sense for the clientele. Staff were all quite friendly and were able to clearly explain the differences in dishes and make recommendations. We also stayed quite a while at closing and they were kind and good at communicating closing. For the experimental diners out there: they have a skewer called lamb treasure that is crunchy and well seasoned and surprisingly so good. You might be able to guess what part it is if you’re familiar with Chinese euphemisms. Fun to order and try as a group! They also have classics like aorta, chicken cartilage, all of which is beautifully seasoned and fun to eat! Will be back when in the area!

Not bad. Had lamb ribs and lamb skewers and beef skewers. Not spicy despite asking for spicier. Chives are a bit salty. Saw another table got the lamb rib hot pot, looks very good, probably will back for that.

Truly a stunning experience. I’m not sure what the negative reviews are about, I can see how if you come expecting top tier Chinese BBQ that the prices can seem high or the flavors redundant for what you get. But we ordered a variety of items and were really satisfied with the texture of the abalone and the smokey, subtly sweet flavor of the BBQ lamb ribs. And the COLD SKIN NOODLES - so phenomenal and flavorful. Highly recommend this version vs. the other preparations I’ve tried at Chinese restaurants…and I have had A LOT of cold skin noodles.

The store was really pretty. After making our reservation, we were seated very promptly and got complementary water. The food was okay but some dishes were a little salty. The waitress was really nice and served us with a smile on her face!
