Customer reviews for Kampai Japanese Restaurant present a somewhat contrasting picture. One reviewer had a very negative experience, describing the restaurant as rundown with outdated and dirty decor. They reported receiving cold hibachi food, despite being given a hibachi menu, and criticized the owner's explanation and handling of the issue. This reviewer also found the hibachi noodles, made from angel hair pasta, to be flavorless and was dissatisfied with being charged 50% for the unsatisfactory meal, strongly recommending others to avoid the restaurant.

Conversely, another reviewer who visited for a birthday celebration reported a positive experience. They enjoyed the good food and found the hibachi chef entertaining with an adorable personality. While they ordered sushi, they also tasted and enjoyed the mushrooms from a friend's hibachi order. They noted receiving tuna sashimi instead of white tuna but did not complain and found it fresh and tasty. They mentioned that the Volcano Bowl they shared could have been stronger but appreciated the low-key atmosphere and the friendly bartender and waitress. They were also given complimentary plum wine, possibly for the birthday, which they enjoyed. This reviewer stated they would definitely return.

Overall, Kampai Japanese Restaurant offers hibachi and sushi in a low-key environment. While one reviewer experienced significant issues with the decor, food quality, and service, another found the food good, the hibachi chef entertaining, and the staff friendly. Potential local users may want to consider these differing experiences when deciding whether to visit.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This place is an absolute dump. The decor hasn’t been updated since the day it opened, and everything feels old, worn, and dirty. On top of that, the service and management are an absolute joke. We were handed a hibachi menu, so we ordered hibachi, only to have it served completely cold. When I brought it up, the owner told me that the waitstaff was supposed to warn us not to order hibachi if we weren’t sitting at a hibachi table. Seriously? Why give someone a hibachi menu if they can’t actually order it? To make matters worse, the hibachi noodles were made from angel hair pasta and were completely flavorless. Even my three-year-old grandson, who loves hibachi noodles, took two bites and declared he didn’t want any more. That says everything. The owner also claimed it’s “impossible” for the kitchen to cook hibachi dishes one at a time and keep them warm. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they charged me 50% of the total cost of the food as a way of supposedly making me happy. How is paying for cold, flavorless food in a rundown restaurant supposed to make anyone happy? Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs—it’s a waste of time and money.

Went here last night for Girls Night/my BFF's birthday. Good food, entertaining hibachi chef with adorable personality. I got the sushi while my friends got hibachi, but one friend gave me her mushrooms she didn't want and they were delicious. I also asked for a piece of white tuna sashimi, but was given the tuna sashimi. I didn't complain though, the waitress may have not heard me either due to surrounding conversation, or because sometimes I am too quiet. I ate it, and it was fresh and tasty. Volcano Bowl I shared with my BFF could have been a bit stronger, but maybe I just had a high tolerance, lol. We got particularly rowdy and animated after a few drinks, arguing about whether or not 'Die Hard' is a Xmas movie or not (it IS, by the way), and the bartender came over because she said we seemed fun and she wanted to join, which I thought was cute. (Maybe her way of making sure we weren't going to get too obnoxious, but it was funny and came off as sweet. She was a hoot.) Our waitress was also sweet. Towards the end of our meal they gave us complimentary glasses of plum wine, I assume because of my BFF's birthday, which I gushed about and asked them what brand they used because it was so much crisper and palatable than other plum wines I've had. The bartender was kind enough to show me the bottle. The atmosphere is super low key. I like the structure in the entrance way. Definitely would return here. 😊

Food is OK, their definitely understaffed and take forever. Reservations made a week ahead of time and still say an hour after the promised time. My bill was $112 TOTAL. they added 18% tip that was included in the $112 bill. I added another 5 dollars to make it 20% or so. Check my card and they've charged $130 plus another charge for $12.... robbery. Simple robbery. Won't be going back ever

Come here twice a year and this was the worst experience. If you dont honor reservations dont let us make them. Made reservations for 8:30 arrived on time and was finally sat down an hour later. Left at 10:40. If i didnt love the shrimp flambe i would rate much lower.

Been coming to this restuarant for over 40 years. It has not changed. Best hibachi around. Entertaining.. amazing noodles and shrimp appetizer. Soup has not changed at all since I was little. Definitely a must in the shoreline area!
