About Joy Palace
Located south of downtown Seattle on Martin Luther King Jr Way S, Joy Palace is recognized as a traditional dim sum restaurant offering a distinct dining experience within the Chinese Restaurant category. Known for its authentic dim sum service via carts and reasonable prices, Joy Palace attracts customers seeking a taste of traditional Chinese cuisine. This introduction aims to provide local users with a balanced and detailed perspective on the environment, services, features, and important considerations based on customer reviews.
Environment: Bustling Traditional Dim Sum Ambiance
Joy Palace is described as a "traditional dim sum restaurant," suggesting an environment that is likely lively and reflective of the classic dim sum hall experience. The mention of waiting for seating indicates its popularity, especially for those seeking authentic dim sum south of downtown Seattle. The service via carts, a hallmark of traditional dim sum, contributes to a bustling and interactive atmosphere, where diners can select dishes as they are presented. However, it's important to note that the restaurant can become "packed and chaotic," particularly on holidays, which might impact the overall dining experience. While the ambiance is likely geared towards the traditional dim sum experience, potential customers should be prepared for a busy and possibly crowded setting, especially during peak hours and holidays.
Services: Quick Cart Service with Potential Self-Service Needs
The primary service feature at Joy Palace is the traditional dim sum service via carts, which is described as "quick and fast." This allows diners to readily choose from a variety of dim sum dishes as they circulate throughout the dining area. However, one customer reported an instance where they had to get their own plates, cups, and utensils due to busy servers, suggesting that during peak times, the service might become stretched. For larger parties of five or more, there can be significant wait times, potentially exceeding an hour, due to the limited number of larger tables. It's also crucial to be aware of the restaurant's policy on gratuity, where a 15% tip is automatically added to the bill on weekdays and 18% on weekends and holidays. This policy is important for customers to know upfront when planning their budget. While the cart service is generally efficient, customers should be prepared for potential delays, especially with seating larger groups, and the possibility of needing to assist themselves with basic table items during very busy periods.
Features: Traditional Dim Sum and Fresh Entrees with Potential Drawbacks
The main feature of Joy Palace is its traditional dim sum offerings, which are described as "quite excellent." Customers can expect a wide variety of classic dim sum dishes served directly from carts. Additionally, the restaurant offers other entrees, which one reviewer found to be "fresh and delicious." This suggests a commitment to providing quality ingredients in their cooked-to-order dishes as well. However, a significant point of concern raised by a customer is the potential overuse of MSG, which led to excessive thirst. This is an important consideration for individuals sensitive to MSG. Another feature to be cautious of is the quality of the "roast duck to go," which one customer found to be predominantly "all skin and bones" for a price of $36. This suggests potential inconsistencies in the quality of certain takeaway items. While the traditional dim sum and some entrees are praised for freshness and flavor, the potential for high MSG content and the reported poor quality of the roast duck takeaway are important features that prospective customers should be aware of.
Promotional Information: Word-of-Mouth on Dim Sum Quality with Caveats
The primary positive promotion for Joy Palace comes from the word-of-mouth regarding its "excellent" traditional dim sum and "fresh and delicious" entrees. The reasonable prices also serve as an attraction for budget-conscious diners seeking authentic dim sum. However, the negative experiences shared by a reviewer act as crucial counterpoints that potential customers should consider. The long wait times for larger parties, especially on holidays, the potential for chaotic service requiring self-assistance, the reported overuse of MSG, and the poor quality of the expensive roast duck takeaway are significant drawbacks that might deter some customers. The automatic addition of a 15% or 18% gratuity is also an important piece of information that could influence a customer's decision. Therefore, while Joy Palace is promoted by its traditional dim sum and reasonable prices, potential customers should weigh these positives against the reported negative aspects to make an informed decision.
In conclusion, Joy Palace offers a traditional dim sum experience south of downtown Seattle with reasonable prices and generally well-received dim sum and fresh entrees. However, potential customers should be aware of potential long wait times, especially on holidays and for larger groups, the possibility of needing to self-serve during busy periods, the reported overuse of MSG, and the potential for inconsistent quality in takeaway items like the roast duck. The automatic inclusion of gratuity in the bill is also a key factor to consider. While the allure of traditional dim sum at a reasonable price is strong, it is essential for local users to be aware of the potential downsides based on recent customer experiences.

Customer Reviews
Traditional dim sum restaurant that is quite excellent south of downtown Seattle. You will wait for seating but service via carts is quick and fast. Reasonable prices. All the entrees we had were fresh and delicious.
FYI Never go there on a holiday, the place is packed and chaotic. If you go on a party of 5 or more, prepare to wait over an hour because most of their tables are for 4 people and 5 or more would need to wait for the big table, which is almost a 2 hour wait. When we got our table, I had to get my own plates, cups, and utensils because all servers are busy. Food was okay but too much MSG that I had to had my teapot refilled 3 times. When it came to paid the bill, one regular customer told us “no tip” they already added to the bill, 15% for weekdays and 18% on weekends and holidays. Before we leave, we order a roast duck to go for $36 but it was a huge mistake, it was all skin and bones. When we got home, everyone was drinking a lot of water and we chugged half a case of the large 1 liter bottle water. Eating out like this is “once in a blue month.”
The food and service was okay. The sizzling rice soup wasn't very good though. Went on Xmas Eve and it wasn't very crowded. The chowmein tasted good but it didnt have much of the other ingredients other than noodles. Our party enjoyed the salt & pepper pork chops the most. The shrimp with black bean sauce had too much green peppers in it. The shrimp with lobster sauce was good.
Always liked the authenticity, Dim Sum is always fun here, it's easy to order badly here because the menu is so expansive. That was the case this time...service is always very nice too but can be difficult to get follow up assistance...
BEST dim sum in Seattle. The staff was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. We were surrounded by mainly elderly, and it just felt like a big family reunion. The tea is really good. The flavors are AMAZING. I was especially surprised that my favorite dish ended up being the beef tendon soup. I was already so full by the time I got it, but upon tasting it I couldn't help but finish the whole bowl. It was so rich in flavor and I crave it til this day. I will definitely be going back, this has to be my favorite spot in Seattle.
