About Jefferson Chop Suey
Located at 1622 S Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63104, USA, Jefferson Chop Suey stands as a cherished institution within the St. Louis culinary landscape. This Chinese restaurant, reachable at (314) 773-1688 or +1 314-773-1688, is a testament to consistency and quality, having garnered a loyal following over many years, with some patrons having grown up enjoying its distinct flavors. While information might not be as widely disseminated online as some larger establishments, its reputation is solidly built on word-of-mouth recommendations and a history of satisfying local cravings for authentic Chinese comfort food.
The environment of Jefferson Chop Suey is characterized by its humble and unassuming nature. It is described as a "small shop," suggesting a focus on the food rather than elaborate decor. This type of setting often signals a genuine, no-frills approach to cooking, where the emphasis is solely on delivering delicious meals. For first-time visitors, the modest exterior should not be a deterrent, as it belies the quality and satisfaction that awaits within. While it might take "a little while" for orders, indicating that dishes are prepared fresh and with care, the consensus among patrons is that the wait is undeniably "worth it." This suggests that Jefferson Chop Suey prioritizes culinary execution over speed, ensuring each dish is prepared to its long-standing standards.
In terms of services, Jefferson Chop Suey primarily operates as a local Chinese restaurant offering both dine-in and takeout options, though the compact size hints that takeout may be a popular choice. The staff, while not explicitly detailed in extensive reviews, contribute to the overall experience through their efficient handling of orders. The very nature of a beloved local spot like this often means a friendly, community-oriented approach to customer service, where regular patrons are recognized and new ones are welcomed into the fold. The focus on quality preparation means orders are handled diligently, ensuring the integrity of the dishes.
The features of Jefferson Chop Suey lie in its unwavering dedication to classic Chinese American cuisine, maintaining flavors that have delighted generations. This consistency is a rare and highly valued trait in the ever-evolving food scene. One of its standout features, highly recommended by locals, are the Roasted Duck Legs. While duck is commonly encountered chopped, the availability of whole duck legs suggests a commitment to more traditional or robust preparations, offering a rich and flavorful experience. This is a dish that speaks to the restaurant's confidence in its cooking techniques and its desire to offer something beyond the usual. The fact that a customer specifically sought this out based on local advice underscores its unique appeal.
Beyond the duck, the restaurant's foundational dishes also receive high praise. The Pork Fried Rice, for instance, offers a unique take compared to many other establishments. Instead of the typical diced roast pork (char siu), Jefferson Chop Suey uses strips of pork, reminiscent of beef fried rice. While this might seem "odd" at first glance, patrons are consistently "pleased" with the outcome, affirming that the fried rice itself is "really good." This subtle difference highlights the restaurant's distinct approach to familiar recipes. Furthermore, the provision of a single packet of soy sauce and a packet of cayenne powder with orders is an interesting detail, suggesting a customized approach to seasoning that encourages patrons to adjust the "kick" to their liking, a small but notable personal touch.
Perhaps the most compelling feature of Jefferson Chop Suey is its timeless appeal. A long-time customer succinctly captures this, stating, "I’ve grown up eating their food and one thing I can say is it never changed…" This consistency is a powerful draw, particularly for those who left St. Louis and returned specifically for their food. The "Chicken Fried Rice with Gravy" and the "Chicken St. Paul" are legendary dishes that exemplify this unchanging quality, described as "hands down the best place" for them. The Chicken St. Paul sandwich, a St. Louis regional specialty, featuring an egg foo young patty with chicken (or other meats) on white bread with dill pickle, speaks to the restaurant's deep roots in the local culinary identity. These dishes are not merely meals; they are nostalgic experiences, linking generations through shared flavors.
Regarding promotional information, Jefferson Chop Suey relies heavily on its established reputation and the loyalty of its customer base. While explicit promotional campaigns may not be widely advertised, the enduring positive word-of-mouth acts as its most effective marketing. Its status as a "worth the wait" and "worth a try" establishment, highly recommended by those in the know, generates organic interest. The consistent quality and unique interpretations of classic dishes, such as the pork fried rice and the iconic chicken fried rice with gravy and chicken St. Paul, serve as perpetual draws. For a place that has maintained its essence for decades, the food itself is the best advertisement, inviting both new customers to discover its charm and bringing back those who crave the comfort of a taste that "never changed."
In conclusion, Jefferson Chop Suey is more than just a Chinese restaurant; it is a beloved neighborhood institution in St. Louis. Its small, unpretentious environment belies the exceptional quality and consistency of its food. With its friendly service, signature dishes like the roasted duck legs, unique pork fried rice, and the iconic chicken fried rice with gravy and Chicken St. Paul, it offers an authentic taste of classic Chinese American cuisine that has resonated with generations. For anyone seeking a truly satisfying and nostalgic Chinese meal in St. Louis, Jefferson Chop Suey, despite its humble facade, is a must-try destination that consistently delivers on its promise of delicious, unchanging flavors.

Customer Reviews
First time at this place since being at nearby hotel a few times decided to get some Chinese food. Not so much information about this place on reviews, so I asked a few people and said it was very good. I was told to try the duck legs that it was very good, I had roasted duck before but chopped up so I’m sure I had a bite or two. So the shop is small and it take a little while but it was worth the wait. So being new I didn’t try a regular order so I got the small pork fried rice. Now most places have diced roast pork with the char siu on it. This place didn’t, it was strips of pork like beef fried rice. I thought it was odd but I was pleased because the fried rice was really good. They provided just 1 packet of soy sauce and cayenne powder, which is the first at any restaurant but I sprinkled it on the rice. Yes it was good with a small kick. I know next time to get a special dish maybe sweet & sour or something else. So don’t let this little place fool you, it’s worth a try their food. Recommend.
I’ve grown up eating their food and one thing I can say is it never changed….. I’ve been out of St. Louis for 10 years and I came back here just for their flcgicken fried rice with gravy and a chicken St. Paul…… hands down the best place
Hello! They know how to fry chicken! I got 3 WHOLE Wings that were Crispy, Juicy, Golden and perfectly seasoned👏!! Learn from the best!! I also got a shrimp St Paul sandwich and a small order of shrimp fried rice with extra green onions and bean sprouts. Best Meal I had in St. Louis and I ate it in my car overlooking Forest Park. Came back to visit friends, family and good takeeout . I miss good food....
The food was absolutely terrible. Tasted like the oil hasn’t been changed for two weeks.
Do not eat here this place is disgusting. They have mice and horrible service, especially on the phone. Need to be reported to BBB and FHD immediately. They only got a 1 because it won’t let me post without star. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!
