About J J's Wok N Grill
Welcome to J J's Wok N Grill, a "Chinese Restaurant" located at 200 Pearl St UNIT 6 in Houghton, Michigan. Serving the local community, J J's Wok N Grill offers a variety of Chinese cuisine options. You can contact them at their phone number (906) 483-4868 or their mobile number +1 906-483-4868 for inquiries or to place an order. It is important to note, based on customer feedback, that J J's Wok N Grill operates as a cash-only establishment, and an ATM with a fee is reportedly located across the street.
Based on recent customer reviews, the dining experience at J J's Wok N Grill appears to be highly polarized, with starkly contrasting opinions on the food quality and overall value. One highly critical review suggests a significantly negative experience, while another offers a glowing recommendation. Local users should consider both perspectives when deciding whether to patronize this establishment.
The negative review expresses strong dissatisfaction, claiming that positive reviews might be inauthentic. This customer, who identifies as a Chinese food enthusiast with experience dining across the country, rated J J's Wok N Grill as the "worst" they have encountered. Specific criticisms include the high price of $24 for a serving of orange chicken, five crab rangoon, one sauce, and an Arizona iced tea. The customer also detailed the unexpected preparation of the orange chicken, describing it as grilled chicken cut into small pieces in soy sauce with large vegetables, minimal red peppers, and tiny orange peels, deviating significantly from the typical expectation of this dish.
The crab rangoon received a mediocre rating of 5/10, deemed "not bad" but not something the customer would order again. Furthermore, the sauce for the rangoon was reportedly an extra charge of $1 per ounce, and the customer was given an unspecified sauce instead of the requested sweet and sour sauce, which they found "disgusting" and discarded. This overwhelmingly negative experience led the reviewer to state they would "never go here again," marking it as a uniquely undesirable Chinese restaurant experience.
In stark contrast, a second reviewer offered a highly positive assessment, recommending trying "all of the menu" and highlighting the presence of "classic favorites." This reviewer specifically recommended the "za jiang noodles," noting it as a "highly missed item from back home" and suggesting its popularity ("popular for a reason"). They advised ordering quickly and remembering the cash-only policy. This review paints a picture of J J's Wok N Grill as a place that offers authentic and enjoyable dishes, particularly the za jiang noodles, which might be a specialty or a more traditional offering that resonates with those familiar with it.
Considering these diametrically opposed reviews, it is challenging to form a definitive objective assessment of J J's Wok N Grill's food quality. The experience seems to vary significantly depending on the dish ordered and individual expectations. The za jiang noodles appear to be a standout item for at least one customer, suggesting that the restaurant might have strengths in specific, perhaps less common, dishes. However, the negative experience with the orange chicken and the issues with pricing, sauce charges, and the cash-only policy are serious concerns that potential customers should be aware of.
Information regarding the environment and services of J J's Wok N Grill is limited. The negative review mentions a cash-only policy and the presence of an ATM across the street with a fee, which could be considered part of their service model. The positive review does not offer insights into the ambiance or the efficiency of service beyond recommending quick ordering. Local users seeking information on the restaurant's atmosphere, cleanliness, or the attentiveness of the staff might need to look for additional reviews or visit the establishment themselves.
A potential feature of J J's Wok N Grill, based on the positive review, could be the availability of more authentic or less commonly found Chinese dishes like za jiang noodles, which might appeal to those seeking beyond standard American-Chinese fare. However, the negative review's experience with the orange chicken highlights a potential inconsistency in the preparation or interpretation of more common dishes.
Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided reviews. The contrasting opinions on value, with one customer citing high prices for the perceived quality and quantity, and the other not mentioning price as a concern, make it difficult to assess the overall affordability of J J's Wok N Grill. Local users looking for deals or promotions would need to contact the restaurant directly or check local listings.
In conclusion, J J's Wok N Grill in Houghton, MI, presents a complex picture based on the limited and conflicting customer feedback. While one reviewer found "good stuff" and highly recommended the za jiang noodles, another described a very negative experience with the orange chicken, crab rangoon, pricing, and sauce. The cash-only policy with an off-site ATM is also a notable aspect. Local users considering J J's Wok N Grill should be aware of these contrasting views. Those interested in trying potentially more authentic dishes like za jiang noodles might find it worthwhile, but caution is advised regarding the more standard American-Chinese fare based on the detailed negative review. Further investigation or more reviews might be needed to form a more balanced understanding of what J J's Wok N Grill offers.
For local residents in Houghton, MI, J J's Wok N Grill represents a Chinese restaurant option with strongly divergent customer experiences reported. If you are interested in trying specific dishes like the za jiang noodles mentioned in the positive review and are prepared for a cash-only transaction, it might be worth a visit. However, the detailed negative feedback regarding the orange chicken and overall value should be taken into consideration. It may be prudent to inquire about specific dishes or read more reviews before deciding to dine here.

The good reviews on here have to be fake, paid for, or just people who have never left the yoop and haven’t tried Chinese food in different places. Chinese food is my favorite and I’ve tried it in almost every state in the country, this is the worst. JJ’s Not worth the price or the time going there. 24 dollars for a serving of orange chicken, 5 crab rangoon, 1 sauce, and an Arizona ice tea and that’s not including the fee for the atm across the street because it’s cash only. The orange chicken is not what you would ever expect, it’s like grilled chicken cut up into tiny pieces in soy sauce with big vegetables, 2 pieces of red peppers, and 3 tiny strips of orange peels. I would rate the crab Rangoon a 5/10 it wasn’t bad but isn’t something I would ever order again. The sauce for the Rangoon is a extra dollar an oz. I asked for sweet and sour sauce for the Rangoon but they gave me whatever sauce they had that was a dollar. I tossed the sauce right out, disgusting. I’ve never not wanted to eat at a Chinese restaurant again before in my life but I’ll never go here again.
good stuff, I recommend trying all of the menu because some of my classic favorites are there! Highly recommend the za jiang noodles(Highly missed item from back home). popular for a reason, so be sure to order as fast as possible and have cash on you!
One of my favorite places to go in the area. JJ is awesome and works very hard. The wait can be long because they are in such high demand. JJ is generally the only one cooking but his food is always worth the wait. This is primarily a take out business so your best chance is going in person. In house dining is available but it’s still only counter service. They prioritize in house customers so if they don’t answer the phone they are likely already swamped. Again, only one cook so be patient and trust you will have the best Chinese food in houghton. I’ve been addicted to his general tso, always adding broccoli and jalapeños to make it extra spicy.
JJ’s is one of the two good Chinese takeout places in Houghton (along with Ming’s). The sesame chicken and general chicken are both very good, and the egg drop soup is exactly the “takeout style” that I like. The reasons I only give it four stars are because the menu was only available online on Facebook which *requires* you to make an account to see it. A restaurant shouldn’t purposefully make it difficult to see their menu online, especially when Google maps has a menu feature built in. They also only accept cash which makes it kind of difficult since my bank doesn't have an ATM up here (and it's kinda gross in a pandemic).
Overall, unimpressed. Just happened to be hungry while driving through. Chicken and veggies seemed like the best option, but I was weary. From the front, I could see their chicken thighs sitting out over their sink in a pile. Place smelled strongly of oil and salt, and the overall atmosphere felt like the opening of a laundromat. Chicken and veggies - chicken was oily and overly salty. Everything else tasted like it was just poured out of an aluminum can. ALSO, way too many whole pieces of ginger in the brown sauce. I'm sure it's not a bad place. It's just not up to par with what I'm used to.
