Hunan Spring

Came in for lunch at 1:30. I ordered from the lunch special menu which has very fair prices. Food was mediocre but when it came to paying I was disappointed in the service. My friend and I got our checks and paid. Our server waited at our table for like 5 minutes, and was asking us for a tip. We gave him $3 and he said “that’s it” (our bill was only $18). We gave him one more dollar and he was still waiting at the table. Didn’t appreciate him being unprofessional like this, I personally work at a 4-star restaurant and couldn’t imagine what my boss would say to me if I was begging for a tip.

I’m mainly reviewing for a specific dish which I look for, their mapo tofu, because I enjoy it specifically. From photos, I hoped it would be more flavorful but it was more on the bland side: not really a strong sense of the mala spicyness, nor the flavor of the bean sauce. Their rice was also unfortunately clumpy and somewhat harder, see photos attached. The ongoing search for better mapo tofu continues!

The food is always very good. The ambiance is fine - some things could be updated / renovated, but I understand they’ve been in the same location for awhile. The waiters are always nice and efficient and the older gentleman who I think is the owner is always kind. However, when ordering take out, the older woman at the desk can be nasty sometimes. When I asked if the sauce I requested was in the bag, she got very nasty and had a bad attitude. This is a “no-no.” A simple question doesn’t require a nasty attitude, especially if you want to keep your customers returning. Either way, we will always return because the food is yummy and you get a very good quantity. Someone just needs to speak to that lady.

God where do I start…. Food has decent flavor, but there’s always something off with the temperature, texture, etc Ex. Wonton soup, taste great but wonton was cold and oddly hard Beef udon noodles, very flavorful, but the noodle was uber oily and the beef was the same texture as the noodle…gummy The ribs were half burnt The ice cream was freezer burnt The chicken wings were not even full wings, they give you two but break it into pieces to make it look like more and they over cooked it. They cheap out on WATEERRR, and give you such a little amount in this fancy-ish small cup and they don’t keep up with refills. The cups had lip stains on it and the silverware was generally dirty Gave us 3 packets of hot sauce after asking for it multiple times and told us its the last 3 in the whole restaurant so we’re lucky… The service was the worse part, but I would need a whole other review to really encompass that experience. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

Delicious dinner here. My mom and I ordered the sautéed green beans, XO shrimp, and the chefs special crazy fish. Food came out really quickly, good and fast service. Only reason why it’s not 5 stars is that the fish wasn’t fresh. Still a delicious meal and will definitely be returning.
