Walking in, I immediately was torn between remembering Lichee Gardens in Plainfield NJ and a Seinfeld episode. It felt like 1965, and I was loving it. That, and the fact that I, unlike most of the patrons, had neither an aide or a walker. Reservations fill rapidly, and while walk-ins are welcome, be prepared to wait. You'll definitely meet someone you know while waiting. The service was exemplary, especially given how busy they were. The food was good. Of note were the steamed dumplings, homemade and cooked to perfection. That, and the soup, could have made a meal. Speaking of soup, we got the hot and sour soup. Well I can't say it's as good as Mott street, I can say that it was pretty close. Perhaps a little too much sodium, certainly not enough, but that was easily fixed with hot oil and white vinegar, which they happily brought. What I wanted for dinner was a shredded chicken with hot peppers. Well that's what I ordered, but it isn't quite what I got. Instead what I wound up receiving was a chicken with celery and carrots that was quite tasty, but not what I was after. Because they were so busy, I decided to let it go and just enjoy the food. Ordered for me and rhe wife. 160.00 with tip. I dont mind paying for good food but small portions and bland at best. I don't know if they send a rickshaw to china to pick it up and deliver it but we will never do it again. There are better places for half the price with great food the lo mein in phot was 20 bucks. Stopped into this 40-year-old American Chinese institution in Delray—beloved by Boomers, snowbirds, and longtime locals. Full dining room, Formica tables, and a menu straight out of another era with 2025 sticker shock pricing. What Hit: • Fried Rice: One of the best we’ve had locally. Retro dark soy style, just like you’d find in NYC in the 1970s—savory, smoky, and rich with wok hei. This style is very hard to find in South Florida, and they absolutely nailed it. • Spare Ribs ($17.95 for 6 / $26 for 9): Sticky, meaty, and old-school delicious. A standout dish and a surprisingly good value considering the portion and quality. What Missed: • Hot & Sour Soup: Lacked heat, tang, and that peppery backbone. We had to rescue it with white vinegar (no black available) and chili paste. The crunchy wonton skin things brought to the table with the Coleman’s mustard and duck saucewere good though. • Orange Chicken ($30): Small portion, stringy texture, and low on flavor. • Happy Bird: A bland surf-and-turf in brown sauce—no real punch. Also Spotted: • Ginger Scallion Lobster—looked great, split-plated and photogenic. Bottom Line: Yes, it’s pricey for what you get, and not everything hits. But the fried rice and ribs? Worth the trip alone. I’ll be back for those in a New York Chinese minute.
This establishment the food is twice price of any Chinese take out restaurant, but the food is horrible. They put some bad ground “meat” in the hot and sour soup, it smells stink, tastes disgusting, I threw all of it. $20 Beef chow fun is even more expensive than New York, and the portions is much smaller. Dumplings are small and not tasty. $60 for: stink soup, little dumplings, fried rice and chow fun.
This was my first visit. We went for lunch. The dining room is attractive. The waiter was efficient but seemed to be the only server for the dining room. My friend and I both ordered Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. It was good but a bit bland for my taste. My friend, who does not like anything with a spicy taste, was happy with her meal. I asked for some chili oil and also added a tiny bit of soy sauce. It helped but I wouldn’t order it again. I know I’ll be back because my friends are all raving about the food they had on a subsequent visit. I’ll have to find some other dishes that have more interesting flavors. I was surprised because the restaurant name is Hunan Gardens and Hunan dishes are usually often spicy. The food on most of the menu seems to be Cantonese (mild).
